It’s no secret that things have been rough for Disney when it comes to its streaming service, Disney+. Disney recently shared that, because of the recent price hike, the streamer had lost 1.3 million subscribers. There have also been a number of series cancellations, including The Mysterious Benedict Society, Big Shot, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and National Treasure: Edge of History.
However, it is not all bad news. In fact, there is some really good news.
On December 19, 2023, Disney released its newest original series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The series stars Walker Scobel as Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old demigod who is accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt. Along with his friends, Annabeth and Grover, Percy must fight unimaginable monsters, find the lightning bolt, and restore order to Olympus.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians was an immediate hit, breaking records for Disney+, Hulu, and even TikTok, just one week after its release. And Disney has now shared that the success of Percy Jackson has earned the show a second season!
During its fourth-quarter earnings call, news of the new Percy Jackson season was shared by Disney CEO, Bob Iger.
Shortly after Iger’s announcement, Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis released a statement, sharing how excited Disney was to bring Percy Jackson and his friends back for another incredible season.
“Rich in magic, wonder, adventure and heart, Percy Jackson and the Olympians captivated the imaginations of viewers of all ages everywhere. We’re thrilled to embark on an exciting new quest and a season two with Rick Riordan, our fantastic partners at 20th Television, and the exceptional ensemble of cast and creative talent that bring this story to life.”
Percy Jackson was originally a book series, penned by author Rick Riordan. Riordan has been a key player in the creation of Disney’s new hit series.
Riordan was also excited to hear about a second season. He revealed to fans that the second season would focus on the second book in the Percy Jackson series — Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. The first season was based on the first book in the series — Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.
“I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+. Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”
Percy Jackson and the Olympians also stars Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, Aryan Simhadri as Grover, Virginia Kull as Sally Jackson, and Megan Mullally as Alecto.
