A family Disney trip cost more than $315,000

A trip to the Walt Disney World Resort ended up costing more than $315,000, and it was only a week-long vacation. (And that didn’t include park tickets!)

Jon Platt’s daughter was only six years old when he decided to take her out of school for a seven-day vacation at the Most Magical Place on Earth. The family had been planning a vacation getaway that included 17 family members, and that one week in April 2015 was the only week that would work for everyone.

It’s not uncommon for families to take their children to the parks at Disney World during the school year. Some do it to avoid the crowds, some do it because the ticket prices are a bit less expensive, and some do it because it’s the only time that will work for the family to visit.

But Jon Platt lives in the United Kingdom, and his daughter goes to school in the U.K. British truancy laws are tough, and school attendance is mandatory. Missing school in the U.K. can cost parents a fine, which is exactly what happened to the Platts.

Upon returning from a magical vacation in Central Florida at Disney World, Platt’s daughter went back to school, and Platt was fined £120, which is approximately $150 USD, but Platt refused to pay it. Instead, he decided to fight the fine that had been imposed on him.

Magic Kingdom's Cinderella Castle

According to Metro, Platt was convicted of “failing to ensure his child regularly attended school after a court heard clearing him would ‘undermine Parliament’ and go ‘against public interest’ following a Supreme Court ruling.”

In June 2017, during a hearing held at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court, Jeannie Walker, one of the magistrates, said it was clear the school rules were broken.

“The circumstances of this case fall squarely into that breach of school rules,” Walker said.

During that hearing, Jon Platt was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge. He was also ordered to pay costs of £2,020, or almost $2,550 USD.

Once outside the court, Platt said he had spent “close to £30,000” (or $37,850 USD) in his legal battle. But he says he wouldn’t appeal the magistrate’s decision any further.

“This is the end for me now, this has gone on for far too long, and far too much money has been spent by me and the taxpayer,” Platt said. “I’ve spent close to £30,000, a Freedom of Information request found £140,000 has been spent by the taxpayer, but if you include the Supreme Court legal costs I think it isn’t far off a quarter of a million [pounds].”

£250,000 is approximately $316,000 USD.

“Way too much money has been spent but I’m not going to appeal it,” Platt continued. “I don’t agree with the magistrates’ decision but I’m going to respect it. I’m sure there are parents out there that hate me and I’m sure there are some who think I’m a hero. But at the end of the day, I turned up to court to say ‘not guilty’ to an offense I’m not guilty of.”

Platt’s legal battle lasted two long years, and his case was eventually heard by the Supreme Court. Platt’s attorneys attempted to prove their case by explaining that Platt’s daughter had an attendance record in school of 92.3%. But it didn’t seem to make a difference, as the entire panel of judges ruled against him.

During the hearing, one of Platt’s attorneys, Paul Greatorex, argued that the continued prosecution of Platt was unfair and unjust. There was even a request made to have the case thrown out.

According to Metro:

Paul Greatorex outlined his case for an ‘abuse of process’ argument by saying Platt’s daughter had an attendance level between 90 and 95 percent which the school deemed as ‘satisfactory’.

Mr. Greatorex QC said the documents Platt received from the school were ‘completely vague’ and it was not made clear that if he took her on an unauthorized holiday he would receive a fixed penalty notice and be prosecuted if he did not pay it.

He also said it was ‘grossly unfair’ to ‘criminalize’ Platt despite being told his daughter’s attendance was ‘satisfactory’ and that a holiday would not change that.

Disney Considering Sequel To Encino Man

In the 1990s and early 2000s, there were a number of actors who seemed to be in nearly every movie you saw. One of those actors was the beloved Brendan Fraser. For over two decades, Fraser appeared in a number of popular films, including The Mummy franchise, Blast From The Past, Bedazzled, G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, and the incredibly fun Disney film, George of the Jungle. While he has remained in Hollywood, Fraser suffered a number of personal setbacks and his career slowed down.

One of Fraser’s more popular films was the 1992 film, Encino Man, which also starred Sean Astin, Pauly Shore, and Megan Ward. The film tells the story of friends Dave (Astin) and Stoney (Shore), who discover a caveman (Fraser) frozen in ice while Dave is trying to dig a swimming pool in his yard. Dave and Stoney thaw the Neanderthal and bring him back to life. As the caveman — who Dave and Stoney name Link — tries to navigate the modern world, Dave and Stoney tell people that he is merely a foreign exchange student who does not understand their ways.

The film quickly became a cult classic and is now celebrating its 30th anniversary. Pauly Shore recently sat down with Inverse to talk about the movie and revealed that Disney is actually considering making an Encino Man sequel for its streaming service, Disney+. During the interview, Shore said:

I know Disney+ is talking about possibly doing the sequel. If they want me to do it and the script was right and Brendan and Sean were on board and it made sense, I would do it for the fans! It’s what George [Zaloom the screenwriter] has been working on. So ask him about it.

In the same interview, Zaloom did not confirm a sequel was in the works, but he would like there to be one. Zaloom said that he would not say there is a sequel in the works, but he won’t say that there isn’t a sequel in the works. He wants to be “pleasantly surprised.” Shore said that working on Encino Man was one of the happiest times of his life.

Although Fraser’s career slowed down for a while, he is currently making a strong comeback and working on a number of projects. He had a lead role in the series Professionals, as well as the show Doom Patrol. He also has four films that are in post-production and one film in development.

Disney Executive Named In FBI Probe As Part of “Cabal”

When it comes to business in Anaheim, California, no one is bigger than Disney. The Disneyland Resort employs thousands of employees and brings millions of dollars into the city every year. For a long time, Disney pretty much got everything they wanted from the local government, including a $1 per year lease on one of its parking garages. Disney pays $1 per year to the city of Anaheim for use of the Mickey and Friends garage and gets to keep the rest of the money — and it currently charges $30 per vehicle, $40 if you want preferred parking.

Over the past few years, Disney and the city of Anaheim haven’t always been on the best terms, but Disney still seems to come out on top. According to an FBI affidavit that was recently made public, that is most likely because a Disneyland executive was part of a “cabal” that was pulling some of Anaheim’s major political strings. Disney was never officially named in the affidavit, it was just referred to as “Company A”. However, a person close to the investigation revealed that Disneyland Resort was, in fact, “Company A”. It is very important to note that the FBI affidavit has NOT accused Disney or the executive of any wrongdoing.

Carrie Nocella is Disneyland Resort Director of External Affairs, and a deep dive into the affidavit conducted by The Los Angeles Times shows just how involved she and others were in making sure political decisions made by the city favored “Company A.” Per The Times:

Company A came to light in a 99-page affidavit by FBI Special Agent Brian Adkins in support of a criminal complaint accusing Todd Ament, the former head of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, of lying to a mortgage lender.

The agent wrote that Ament and an unnamed political consultant “were the ring leaders of a small group of individuals who met in person to discuss strategy surrounding several matters within Anaheim — matters that were often pending, or soon to be pending, before the Anaheim City Council,” Adkins wrote.

The affidavit described Company A Employee — Nocella — as one of the group’s ringleaders “to some extent.”

In advance of a secretive gathering of Anaheim business leaders, consultants and politicians in December 2020, Adkins alleged Company A Employee provided input to Ament and the political consultant about who to invite.

Details about the consultant in the affidavit match Jeff Flint, chief executive and senior partner at FSB Public Affairs, who has represented Disneyland Resort. Flint, who announced last week that he was taking a leave of absence as CEO, denied doing anything wrong.

California Adventure

According to the affidavit, Nocella helped a political consultant for the city draft a meeting agenda script about issuing bonds to companies to help with shortfalls because of the pandemic. Just before a meeting where the script was supposed to be read, Nocella reached out to the political consultant and asked that any mention of Disney’s parking lot be removed.

Mickey and Friends parking

Then-Anaheim mayor Harry Sidhu — who has since resigned due to a corruption probe involving Angels Stadium — spoke extensively about the agenda. Sidhu praised Disney and said that he believed they would continue to invest in the city of Anaheim for years to come. The affidavit states that Nocella was unimpressed and texted the political consultant about how poorly the script was read.

Disneyland Minnie Display

It is again important to note that Disney has not been accused of doing anything wrong. Nocella’s deep involvement in Anaheim politics only came to light because of the corruption probe against Sidhu. When asked about the affidavit by The Times, Disney made the following statement:

“We have seen media reports of the complaint and no authorities have reached out to us about it.”

Since the affidavit was made public, Nocella has deleted her social media accounts. She did not give a comment to The Times for the article.

7-Year-Old struck by bullet at Walt Disney Magnet School

A seven-year-old child at the Walt Disney Magnet School in Chicago was struck by a bullet after a gun inside another student‘s backpack fired.

The incident happened on May 17 inside the Walt Disney Magnet School in the 4100 block of North Marine Drive. The child who was wounded was in a classroom at the time the gun went off. After parents learned about the incident, many, understandably, had questions about how exactly a gun got into a child’s backpack and how the child could have brought it to school without anyone knowing.

According to The Chicago Sun-Times, parents voiced their concerns aloud. One mother asked reporters “How did a kid get a gun in his backpack and come to school like it’s a normal day?”

Police officers said that the gun discharged shortly before 10:00 a.m. while it was still inside a backpack in a classroom. The bullet from the firearm struck the ground before ricocheting and grazing another student in the abdomen.

The boy that was grazed by the bullet was immediately taken to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital where he was said to be in good condition, according to Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

Disney Magnet School Principal Paul Riskus told parents that as soon as the incident took place, faculty members quickly secured the gun and contacted authorities.

“We are working closely with the CPS Office of Safety and Security to make a safety plan moving forward,” Riskus wrote in an email. “Please know that we are taking this situation extremely seriously, and [the Chicago Police Department] is investigating.”

Upon learning about the incident, parents became frantic.

“We are freaking out,” Victor Garcia, whose son attends pre-school at the Walt Disney Magnet School, told ABC7. “There are gun shootings going [on] all over the country. This is crazy.”

Safana Almakram, one of the parents of a student at the school was downtown when she received the email from the principal. She raced to the school where other parents were visibly shaken by the news. Many had arrived to pick up their students.

“We were so scared,” Almakram said.

Principal Riskus penned an email to parents, explaining the incident, reassuring parents, and detailing the faculty’s response.

It reads in part:

Schools today face very different challenges than they once did. One of those challenges is confronting the reality that what happened at Walt DisneyMagnet School on Tuesday can now happen just about anywhere.

Words cannot describe what I felt Tuesday morning and in the hours that followed. I am sure that every member of the Disney community has had similar feelings of fear, sadness, and anger.

A loaded gun was brought into school in a child’s backpack. The gun spontaneously went off while in the backpack, in a large common area, amid primary-age children.

Our staff sprang into action and within moments of contacting the police, word spread rapidly through the media. We tried hard to send communication to parents as quickly as we could. Unfortunately, those initial rapid media reports – posted minutes after the incident – could not possibly tell the full story, causing many of you to rush to our school in fear for your children before we could even notify you of the incident and assure you that your/our children were safe. Our community was understandably terrified. As a parent of two young children myself, I understand this reaction and I’m sorry that most of you first learned of this incident via the media.

I have been so impressed by so many; students, parents, and our staff. There was the Assistant Principal who quickly identified the backpack where the noise erupted and removed it from the classroom. The teachers who remained calm and quietly checked in with each student, reassuring them they were not in danger. The teacher who discovered and comforted a child who sustained minor injuries, which were later determined to be caused by fragments of a bullet and debris that had ricocheted off the floor. The security staff members who quickly secured the backpack and firearm until police arrived. The office staff who calmly gathered students as their parents came to pick them up.

On Thursday evening, 130 Disney parents, teachers, and community members came together at our school for about 90 minutes. The purpose of this gathering was to share feelings and reactions in small groups and to brainstorm additional safeguards and procedures that we might consider in light of Tuesday’s events.

Incidents like last Tuesday’s can be terrifying. Our only real comfort comes from seeing how resilient our children have been, and how so many adults managed to keep their own anxiety in check so we could prioritize the physical and emotional safety of our kids.

What our kids saw was a community of loving adults who showed calm concern while continuing to do all the great things they normally do throughout the school day. This display of community character comes as no surprise – and it’s the best reassurance I have that we’re going to be OK.

Paulette Savage, a seventh grade teacher at the magnet school, was upset that the principal’s email didn’t specifically say that a student was actually wounded. She says she had to find out from the news media.

“I just expect more transparency,” said Savage, who teaches at another Chicago Public School. “We should never find out from the news.”

Parent Anna Sedelmaier said the school has a “good vibe,” but she also shared that she’s concerned about the “great” and “loving” instructors.

“I’m more worried about the teachers right now because I think [the kids] are fine,” Sedelmaier said. “How they must be viewing this and how traumatic it is for the people who understand the weight of this.”

According to its website, “The Walt Disney Magnet School is an eleven-acre site located on Chicago’s lakefront. Much of the student body is bused from the many neighborhoods in the city. Thus, it reflects the racial, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity of the city.

It opened in the 1970s and was the first magnet school in the City of Chicago. Walt Disney Magnet School is an open-spaced environment with a team teaching format. There are approximately 1,600 students in Preschool through 8th grades. Disney is part of the Fine Arts Magnet School Cluster and delivers arts and technology-integrated instruction.”

Plans for a new type of instructional setting in the Chicago area had been in place for years. It was determined that the magnet school program was to feature an emphasis on communication arts. Walter Elias Disney was born on North Tripp Avenue in 1901 in Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood. As such, the question was put forth: Why not honor Walt Disney–the Chicago-born, “uber-arts communicator” for “children of all ages?”

The new building saw its first school year and first welcomed students in 1973, though classes had been taking place inside renovated parts of an old hospital building in Chicago before then.

The mother of the child whose backpack had the loaded gun in it was charged with misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.

“We are inches away, possibly centimeters away, from a very different case and a very different tragedy,” Judge Michael Hogan scolded the mother, 28-year-old Tatanina Kelly, 28.

Kelly’s 8-year-old son had found the firearm under a bed in the family’s home and brought it to school. Kelly’s bond was set at $1,000.

U. S. Peanut butter recall leaves this Disney World sweet spot in a Predicament

A recent recall of peanut butter in the United States has left a Disney Springs sweets shop in quite a predicament.

On Friday, May 10, a voluntary recall was begun by the J.M. Smucker Company, which makes Jif peanut butter. Because shipments of the peanut butter were widespread and include multiple states, the effects of the recall are expected to also be wide-reaching. One affected venue is Gideon’s Bakehouse at Disney Springs.

According to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), “The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg infections linked to certain Jif peanut butter products produced at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky.”

The dilemma was described in a post on Gideon’s Bakehouse‘s Facebook page. Ironically, per the post, every single limited flavor in the month of May at Gideon’s is peanut butter-based, leaving the Bakehouse in a “bit of a pickle.”

The post reads as follows:

I’m in a bit of a pickle. All of our wonderful limited flavors this month are Peanut Butter based, and due to the recall, all bulk stock of PB coming into the state has been slowed down. We need hundreds of pounds a day and have zero. So, officially, there are no PB-based Desserts in the shop, aka Peanut Butter Crunch, Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl, and the fantastic PB&J Cake Slices. This issue won’t likely resolve until next week, and it will take us a couple of days to ramp back up production since, as you know, everything we do is made from scratch by hand and takes over 24 hours to prepare. If my tears could turn into Peanut Butter, you would all have a lifetime supply. ⁣

To compensate, we’ll be adding Coffee Cake and Dark Coffee Cake in greater numbers to BOTH stores starting Wednesday available at open until sell out. That Cookie is limited because it takes so long to make, so we might not be able to maintain it for long. Keep an eye on feed and stories for flavor replacement updates going into the weekend. To replace the PB&J Cake Slice until this blows over … drum roll … the Original Red Velvet Cake Slices return! Cream Cheese is back!!⁣

The Nitro PB Cold Brew will still be available at @DisneySprings. It is made with peanuts from our favorite Georgia Farm, not peanut butter. ⁣I appreciate your patience through all of this. We’re doing our best to get back on track ASAP and bring you some fun things while you wait.

The post notes that the Nitro PB Cold Brew at Gideon’s will still be available, as it is made from peanuts, but not peanut butter.
