Bring on summer 2021! Exciting news today for us Disney/Pixar film fans. A new film called “Luca” is scheduled to hit theaters summer 2021!
Pixar took to Twitter to share the news: “Meet “Luca.” Directed by Enrico Casarosa & produced by Andrea Warren, our all-new film will introduce a boy named Luca as he experiences an unforgettable summer in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera. “Luca” opens in theaters summer 2021.”
Disney’s live action, Mulan, has been highly anticipated by Disney fans around the globe! The film release date has been pushed back time and time again, but now it seems the release date has been taken off the calendar all together.
Frank Pallotta, a Media reporter at at CNN, took to Twitter to share that “Mulan, set for August 21, has been taken off the calendar, per Disney.”
Pallotta goes on to share the following from a Disney spokesperson: “Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for “Mulan” as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world.”
According to Variety, Disney has decided to delay all upcoming Star Wars and Avatar films as they change their release calendar to account for the COVID-19 closure.
Each film has been offset by one year. The next Star Wars trilogy will now release every other Christmas season starting in 2023. The first will release December 22, 2023, the second will release December 19, 2025, and the third will release December 17, 2027. A recent rumor suggested that Disney might be seeking to “erase” the most recent Star Wars trilogy but this is not corroborated by any sources.
The four Avatar sequels will alternate Decembers with the Star Wars trilogy. “Avatar 2” will be released December 16, 2022, “Avatar 3” will be released December 20, 2024, “Avatar 4” will be released December 18, 2026, and “Avatar 5” will be released December 22, 2028.
“Avatar 2” was supposed to start filming this summer, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed production. James Cameron tweeted the following in addition to Disney’s announcement:
The second Avatar film will now hit theaters thirteen years after the first film.
Disney removed and changed release dates for several other films as well. Mulan and Searchlight title, The French Dispatch, have both been removed from the calendar. The Personal History of David Copperfield, also a Searchlight title, has been moved two weeks to August 28, 2020.
Antlers, a horror film originally scheduled for an April release, has been postponed to February 19, 2021. Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile has been shifted two weeks to October 23, 2020, and The Empty Man has been moved from August to December 4, 2020. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has been moved from Christmas 2020 to October 2021.
This may come as a surprise, given that the first live-action Mulan hasn’t been released and it’s been pushed back, but there’s reports of a live-action Mulan 2 already in the development stages by Walt Disney Studios.
With COVID-19, the release of scheduled movies has been flipped left, right, and upside down. Mulan has since taken the date originally slated for Jungle Cruise.
According to fullcirclecinema.com, insider Daniel Richtman’s Patreon states that Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner will return to produce. No confirmation yet if Niki Caro will be returning to direct the possible sequel.
Mulan has already broken barriers of other live-action Disney films, as it greatly deviates from the animated film; there’s no Mushu, Cri-Kee, or Captain Li-Shang and songs have been axed. There’s no storyline provided yet for what could possibly be in Mulan 2. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if this story pans out and how the numbers for the first live-action version of Mulan look after it’s finally released in theaters this summer.
