Disney Developing Augmented Reality System

Via wdwnt.com

Lighting is often an overlooked aspect of attraction design. Look up while riding Spaceship Earth and you’ll find numerous theater-style lighting fixtures. Consider how the Sistine Chapel scene lighting differs from the computer lab. Lighting designers illuminate the scenes much like a television production or stage show. A new Disney invention could eliminate traditional lighting, moving lighting effects to an augmented reality viewer.

The “Introducing Real-time Lighting Effects to Illuminate Real-world Physical Objects in See-through Augmented Reality Displays” patent application (US 2021/0097757 A1) published April 1, 2021 sheds some light on the invention. A shader and a light source generator are used to apply virtual illumination to physical objects viewed through an augmented reality (AR) display.

“An example method generally corresponds to a three-dimensional geometry of an environment in which the augmented reality display is operating, and the shader generally comprises a plurality of vertices forming a plurality of polygons. A computer generated lighting source is introduced into the augmented reality display. One or more polygons of the shader are illuminated based on the computer-generated lighting source, thereby illuminating one or more real-world objects in the environment with direct lighting from the computer-generated lighting source and reflected and refracted lighting from surfaces in the environment.”

Patent Application

The application’s abstract is rather dense. Let’s simplify it a bit. This system is able to map three dimensional objects in the real world. The shader identifies points on the object; those are the vertices. Those vertices are then connected to create numerous polygons, mapping the real-world object for the computer.

A computer-generated lighting source is then applied to the polygons identified by the shader. The rendered scene lighting is displayed on top of the real-world objects through the AR screen.

Fig. 1A provides an overview of one implementation of the system. The user wears an AR viewer (100A). A camera (120) captures the real-world environment, sending the captured information to the processing system (110). The processing system analyzes the captured environment (112), shades the objects by creating polygons (114), generates virtual lighting (116), then renders the scene (118). The rendered lighting scene is displayed over the see-through lens (140). The user sees virtual lighting effects applied to the real-world objects.

A second version of the system (Fig. 1B) offloads some processing to a networked computer. In this version, the environment identification (112) and shading (114) is handled remotely. A processing system (160) in the AR viewer then generates the lighting effects (116) and renders the augmented scene (118) to the display (130). This setup would allow for smaller, more affordable AR viewers.

Fig. 4 shows the same real-world office scene. The top image (402) does not include the virtual lighting effects. With the rendered lighting effects, the office lighting becomes starker (404). This is the only example provided in the patent application.

This invention could change the way attractions are lighted. While it likely wouldn’t eliminate traditional lighting, it would introduce many new lighting possibilities.

Disney In Talks To Build New Community in Lake Nona, Florida

According to Orlando Business Journal, The Walt Disney Company and Tavistock Development Co. LLC are in talks to build a residential and commercial community in Lake Nona, Florida. The deal is still in early stages so may not come to fruition.

Tavistock is currently preparing to develop 4,192 residential units and 2.4 million square feet of non-residential space in the Lake Nona community, which may be the location for this Disney community.

Of course, this would not be Disney’s first community in the Orlando area. Disney developed Celebration, Florida near Walt Disney World, and Golden Oak within Walt Disney World property. Flamingo Crossings Town Center is currently under construction and opening in phases. A Lake Nona community would be the furthest away from Walt Disney World, at approximately 18 miles.

Disney’s Bob Iger Is “Excited About Life After Disney”

Disney’s executive chairman, Bob Iger, is preparing to end his 47-year career with Disney and ABC in December, as previously announced back in Fall 2019. He then announced his career end with Disney formally in February 2020, making it all much more concrete. Iger sat down for an interview to discuss his future and reflect on the past.

Iger had an interview with SiriusXM who released clips of the interview. One of the main questions to Iger, who turned 70 last month, was what he intends to do when his stint as Disney executive chairman winds down at the end of 2021.

As reported by Deadline: “I am excited about life after Disney,” Iger said. “I felt very strongly in moving on, and just seeing what was on the other side. It had nothing to do with being tired. It had nothing to do with frustration.” Iger goes on to say in reference to Bob Chapek’s elevation, “I did not want to overstay my welcome,” he said. “I wanted the timing to be right, and 15 years [as CEO] felt like enough.”

As far as how he is spending his waning months at the company, Iger said, “I’m doing a little bit of teaching, a little bit of leading by example, a little bit of cajoling. And I imagine that in these next few months, I’ll end up slowly becoming less and less relevant. It is pretty interesting when you suddenly lose that title, your emails start to slow down and certainly the phone calls don’t come as often and it’s pretty clear someone else is running the company. It’s actually pretty interesting from a human perspective, and I don’t mean that negatively at all. It’s just an interesting dynamic.”

The former CEO said it is energizing to confront “a complete blank canvas.” He added, “I’m not retiring. I can’t possibly do that. First of all, my wife’s still working, my kids are all out of the house, I’m not gonna sit around the house binge watching television shows. And so I will figure it out, but I am not going to figure it out while I’m still at Disney and I’m not going to over-commit so that by the time I get out, I won’t have any freedom either.”

Disney Stock Reaches Historical High

Walt Disney Company (DIS) shares reached a new level today, closing at $201.91. That represents an $11.92 (6.27%) increase over yesterday. The stock is flying high on news that Disneyland is cleared to reopen as soon as April 1, 2021.

Sleeping Beauty Castle – Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland is the centerpiece of Fantasyland, and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. Surrounded by beautiful flowers and whimsical topiary, the Disneyland landmark beckons park visitors to explore the different realms of the place “Where Dreams Come True.” Walt Disney wanted this castle to be a friendly and welcoming presence in his park so it was built on a smaller scale than its European counterparts. According to Schaeffer’s Investment Research, DIS shares are up 70% year-over-year. Disney stock previously hit its record high February 24. Today’s results were also buoyed by an $8.6 million take over the weekend from Raya and the Last Dragon.

Disney Closing at Least 20% of Physical Disney Stores, Focus Shifts to E-Commerce

According to CNBC, The Walt Disney Company is closing at least 20% of its brick-and-mortar stores by the end of the year, as its focus shifts more and more towards e-commerce. At least 60 out of 300 Disney Stores will be closing across North America, and then an evaluation on whether to extend these closings to other parts of the world will begin.

The company plans to further utilize its popular shopDisney website and will be adding more “adult apparel collections, streetwear, premium home products, and collectibles” to the online store in the coming months.

Stephanie Young, president of consumer products, games, and publishing states, “While consumer behavior has shifted toward online shopping, the global pandemic has changed what consumers expect from a retailer.” As the COVID-19 pandemic created a massive increase in demand for online shopping, this does not come as a surprise.

The pandemic alone changed shopping habits so drastically, that the demand for e-commerce jumped ahead by about five years. E-commerce sales increased by 32.4%, up to $791.7 billion, in 2020, and that number continues to grow.

While North America will be the first continent to see mass Disney Store closures, Disney officials state that after the effects of these closures are evaluated, Europe would likely be the next target. In the meantime, Disney plans to continue updating and improving its popular shopDisney site, and will add a larger selection of merchandise to appeal to a wider audience.

The Walt Disney Company has not yet made a statement on the impact of job losses due to the store closings.
