Original Flynn Rider Speaks Out About Live-Action ‘Tangled’ Casting

We recently reported on the fact that a live-action Tangled adaptation is in the works, and the rumors have wasted no time in flying about.

As these rumors make their way around, very little is confirmed besides the live-action remake itself. That being said, many sources, including Disney Dining, have pointed out the idea that Disney is looking to Florence Pugh to play the leading lady, Rapunzel herself.

We can totally see why! Florence Pugh looks the part, with her blonde hair and expressive eyes. Not only that, but the actress has worked with Disney in the past, portraying Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Best of all? Florence Pugh has already proved that she has a great voice, making her the person for the job. Now, all that’s left for Disney is to find the perfect Flynn Rider.

As fans throw out their ideas and suggestions for the dashing Eugene Fitzherbert, the original Flynn Rider chimes in and suggests…himself?

It goes without saying that it’s uncommon for voice actors to reprise their roles in a live-action remake. Although James Earl Jones reprised his role as Mufasa in The Lion King (2019), we can excuse that for obvious reasons.

But the idea of Zachary Levi as a live-action Flynn Rider is precisely what the actor is suggesting, according to one report. Reportedly, Levi said,

“There was this thing floating around the internet, I just saw it, somebody sent it to me, that Florence Pugh potentially might play the role of Rapunzel. And If Florence plays Rapunzel, what about me? Which would also be a trip because my real last name is Pugh, p-u-g-h, Zachary Levi Pugh, so you’d have [makes pew-pew noise] in Tangled. Come on!”

While Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are infamous for having a bit of an age difference, 18 and 26, respectively, Florence Pugh and Zachary Levi have an even bigger age difference: 27 and 42.

Age differences often mean very little on the big screen. It’s all make-believe, after all! All that matters is that the actors look the part.

While Florence Pugh can easily pass for a young woman, Zachary Levi doesn’t pass for a young man. At least, not so easily. But Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert has a very unique voice, and perhaps only the original can fill those shoes. And the actor has a good point: two Pughs in one film would make for an objectively funny casting choice.

But all debate aside, Disney has yet to confirm any casting choices for a live-action Tangled film.

A “Tangled”-themed ride in the works at Disneyland Paris

Blueprints that detail plans for a brand-new Disney Parks attraction have reportedly been leaked, and fans are loving it–especially fans of Walt Disney Animation’s 50th full-length feature film.

Disney’s Tangled is the studios’ 50th animated feature project, and was released at the box office in November 2010. According to Disney Movies, the film is based on a story by the Brothers Grimm about a girl named Rapunzel, and her superpower is somewhat unconventional:

When the kingdom’s most wanted, and most charming, bandit Flynn Rider hides in a mysterious tower, the last thing he expects to find is Rapunzel, a spirited teen with an unlikely superpower: 70 feet of magical golden hair! Together, the unlikely duo sets off on a fantastic journey filled with surprising heroes, laughter and suspense.

The Disney film had a budget of $260 million, and to date, it has grossed more than $592 million. To put that into comparison, Disney’s The Princess and the Frog has grossed $271 million to date, and Disney’s Moana has grossed $645 million.

The popularity of the animated film ultimately gave birth to a merch line that included Rapunzel dolls, complete with long, blonde hair, as well as a spin-off series on Disney Channel titled, Tangled: The Series.

And now it seems that the popularity of Walt Disney Animation’s 2010 feature-length film has inspired an attraction at Disneyland Paris.

In 2018, then-CEO of The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger announced a 2 billion-euro plan that would include the development of 3 separate areas around a lake inside the Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris. From what is known at the time of this post, those areas included Avengers Campus, which opened to Guests on July 20, 2022, and work on the new Frozen-themed area of the park.

Now our attention turns toward the third area of the park, first forecast by Bob Iger in 2018. OutsideEars.com “exclusively” shared blueprints for a new Tangled-themed attraction that would be the “keystone of the expansion” that is “gradually being revealed.”

“We exclusively invite you to discover the first plans and visuals of an attraction based on the world of Rapunzel, which will [be located] between the current Walt Disney Studios and the future lake where the future night show of the park will be played,” reads a post online from OutsideEars.

The post goes on to detail where the Tangled attraction will be located:

“The new attraction will take place in a triangle formed by this famous main alley and Toy Story Playland, just in front of the restaurant panorama, which Disneyland Paris presented a few months ago.”

The all-new Tangled-themed attraction will reportedly be a “spinning” attraction, like the Mad Tea Party at Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort and will be manufactured by Italian ride-builder Zamperla. The attraction’s storyline will pick up during the lanterns scene from the animated film, and instead of tea cups, the ride will feature wooden boats that “spin around in the middle of hundreds of lanterns, all in a covered building but open on all of its different facades.”

Plans for the new attraction have not been officially unveiled by Disney Parks at the time of this post, but (if and) when the official announcement is made, we will bring you the news immediately.

Zachary Levi Reveals How a Small Lie Landed Him His ‘Tangled’ Role

Via DisDining.com

The fog has lifted, and Zachary Levi has at last shown us the light. The actor — best known to Disney fans for voicing the character of Flynn Rider AKA Eugene Fitzherbert in the 2010 film Tangled — revealed in an interview that a lie actually landed him a role in the film. Levi not only voiced Flynn Rider in the original film, but then reprised his role alongside costar Mandy Moore in Tangled: The Series, which premiered in 2017, Tangled Ever After, and more.

Zachary Levi recently sat down with James Corden for his Late Late Show and told the host that Disney originally wanted a British actor for the role of outlaw Flynn Rider. Tangled — based on the Rapunzel fairy tale — creators have said that the film takes place in the 1780s (although evidence in the films points to the 1830s/40s), so they originally wanted actors with British accents to play the lead roles in the film.

Tangled

Levi explained to Corden that he has a penchant for doing accents, so his agent told a small, white lie in order to get him an audition. Levi said:

But no, yes, I did. I was in Tangled for Disney which was such an incredible film and experience. They thought Flynn Rider – the role I ultimately played – they wanted him to have an English accent and they wouldn’t even see American actors. Fortunately, my voiceover agent knew that I did a decent English accent and she fought for me and I got in. I might’ve been one of the only Americans to get in there and then they gave me the job.

Tangled

Levi also revealed that, even though a British actor was originally desired for the role, Disney, for some reason, ended up changing their mind and decided that they wanted Flynn Rider to sound American. That created quite an easy shift for the actor, who is from Lake Charles, Louisiana. Disney also decided to make most of the cast American, which lead to the casting of Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel.

Tangled, Tangled Ever After, Tangled Before Ever After, Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, and Tangled: Short Cuts are all available to stream on Disney+. Both Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore reprised their roles as Flynn and Rapunzel for all the films and series.
