Updates on New Disney Parks Attractions, Entertainment

This morning, Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, took the virtual stage at the IAAPA Expo: Virtual Education Conference, where he shared a behind-the-scenes look at the lessons we’ve learned over the past year, and the ways we’re moving forward into 2021 and beyond. Check out all the details as shared below by DisneyParksBlog.

As Josh shared in his talk, the end of the year is always a time for reflection – and to chart a path for the year to come. While we never could have imagined what this year would hold for our company, we’ve learned so much: how to share that special Disney Parks magic with our fans at home during the closures of our businesses worldwide; how to reimagine our park, resort, and store experiences to meet new challenges; and how, even amid uncertainty, to plan for what we know are better days are ahead.

Now, as we look to the future, there are new and exciting milestones on the horizon. While the pandemic meant putting some projects on pause, we never stopped dreaming up new experiences. And we are looking forward to inviting our guests to see what we’ve been working on.

There are groundbreaking new updates coming to Disney destinations around the world. As Josh shared in his update today, progress is currently being made on several projects across the globe that are pushing the boundaries of innovation and storytelling like never before.

Here’s a special peek at some of the announcements Josh made today:

More details were also shared on the next generation of immersive Disney experiences currently in development, including updates on Avengers Campus, the historic transformation of EPCOT and more.

Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure park

Progress continues to be made toward the completion of Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris. This new land will invite guests to team up with the Avengers and their allies in a fully immersive land.

The Worldwide Engineering Brigade (better known as WEB) building will soon house our newest attraction, WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure where guests will be able to board vehicles and help Spider-Man take control of an army of Spider-Bots that have taken over Avengers Campus.

Guests visiting Disneyland Paris will also soon be able to experience Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel – celebrating 80 years of Marvel storytelling in a typical New York setting.

The resort will feature contemporary Art Deco style and include one of the largest publicly viewable collections of Marvel artwork in the world.

At Walt Disney World Resort, work is continuing on the historic, multi-year transformation of EPCOT, including “Harmonious,” Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.

“Harmonious” will be one of the largest nighttime spectaculars ever created. It’ll feature the hallmarks of a Disney experience, including music and images, reimagined by diverse cultural musicians and artists from around the world.

Here are more details on “Harmonious.”

Work also continues on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind – the family-friendly “storytelling coaster” featuring a groundbreaking ride system with vehicles that rotate 360 degrees and can even do a reverse launch!

The Omnicoaster is a first- of-its-kind programmable roller coaster ride system, where guests can be rotated along the ride track in any direction while traveling at high speeds. The Omnicoaster name builds upon the tradition of the Omnimover ride system in which Walt Disney Imagineers are able to turn guests in any direction and focus their attention on a specific scene or element.

And plans are on track to open Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in 2021.  Based on Disney and Pixar’s hit film, “Ratatouille,” this family-friendly attraction will invite you to shrink down to the scale of a rat for a culinary adventure with Chef Remy. During each adventure, you’ll race across Gusteau’s kitchen floor aboard special trackless ride vehicles in a thrilling 3D chase. Click here for more.

Zootopia-inspired land coming to Shanghai Disney Resort

At Shanghai Disney Resort, progress continues on “Zootopia” – where guests will be invited to experience the metropolis of “Zootopia.”

Based on the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Oscar-winning animated movie, this exciting development will be the park’s eighth themed land and the first-ever “Zootopia”-themed land at any Disney park. It will include a new major attraction that will seamlessly blend Disney storytelling and state-of-the-art technology to bring this fan-favorite movie and its characters to life.

And at Tokyo Disneyland, new attractions, restaurants, and shops recently opened – marking the largest expansion of the park’s 37-year history.

Also, part of the expansion will be “Fantasy Springs.” This exciting development will be themed to a magical spring inspired by the beloved Disney Animation films “Frozen,” “Tangled” and “Peter Pan.”   It’ll include four new attractions, three restaurants and a new Disney-themed hotel situated inside Tokyo DisneySea that will overlook Fantasy Springs.

Shanghai Disneyland Increasing Capacity, Transitioning to New Reservation System Starting August 24th

Shanghai Disneyland was the first Disney property to reopen after extended COVID-19 closures back in May. And with CEO Bob Chapek stating that Shanghai is the model for other parks reopening, new developments are always important to watch. Now that the pandemic has seemingly slowed down within China, the Chinese Government is allowing tourism spots to raise capacity from 30% to 50%. As a result Shanghai Disneyland will increase its capacity effective August 24th, and will transition from its current phase of advance reservations to the next phase, according to the official Resort website. This makes Shanghai Disneyland the first Disney-owned park to increase capacity after reopening.

According to Shanghai Disney Resort, this new system will allow Annual Passholders and day guests to visit on any eligible date based on the conditions of their pass or ticket. Guests will still be required to make a reservation in advance, but the process will become much more flexible for both day Guests and Annual Passholders. Let’s start with the new system for Passholders.

Annual Passholders

Beginning August 24, 2020, Shanghai Disneyland Annual Passholders will no longer be required to obtain a visitation spot or choose the arrival time of their visit in advance. Instead, procedures will work as follows:

  • Annual Passholders will be able to visit the park on any eligible day, depending on their pass level.
  • Annual Passholders will need to make a reservation by submitting their visit date and personal information through the resort’s official online platforms to obtain a Shanghai Disneyland Reservation QR Code prior to their arrival at the park entrance.
  • Guests may arrive and enter the park at any time on their selected visit date.
  • The current seven-day reservation calendar will be expanded to a 30-day window for Annual Passholders, including for same-day reservations. A 30-day window for Annual Passholders to reserve a visit starting from August 24th will open on August 18th at 1:00PM China Standard Time.
  • Annual Passholders will be provided with one reservation per visit per pass, and a new reservation can be made once the current one is redeemed, cancelled or expired.

Annual Pass expiration dates will also be extended for the 212-day period between January 25th and August 23rd, 2020. For passes purchased during that period, the validity period will start counting on August 24th.

Day Tickets

As with Annual Pass holders, General Admission ticketholders and tickets with specific dates will not be required to obtain a visitation spot beginning August 24th. Instead, they will only need to make a reservation by submitting their visit date and personal information to obtain a Shanghai Disneyland Reservation QR Code prior to their arrival at the park’s Main Entrance. Tickets will still not be sold on-site at ticket booths, but they may be purchased through the Shanghai Disneyland website or through travel agency partners.

Like with Annual Passes, General Admission ticket validity will be extended 212 from their original expiration dates. Ticket validity for General Admission tickets bought during the period between January 25th and August 23rd will start counting expiration from August 24th.

It’s interesting to see Shanghai Disneyland pave the way forward. They’ve already resumed parades and fireworks on a trial basis and are well on their way towards normality once again. We can only hope that these changes can safely make their way to Walt Disney World and the other Disney resorts soon enough! In the meantime, stay tuned to WDWNT for the latest news as the Disney Parks worldwide recover from the effects of COVID-19.

Is Disney Standby Pass Set To Replace Fastpass+

The FastPass+ System we all know and love at Walt Disney World is looking like a thing of the past! As Disney Parks begin to reopen amidst social distancing guidelines, Disney is testing a new virtual queue system, the “Disney Standby Pass”.

The first appearance of this new system launched for one attraction, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, at Shanghai Disneyland. The system allows guests to create a queuing schedule for attractions right on their park mobile app.

Are you familiar with the Star Wars: Rise of Resistance virtual queue process at Disney’s Hollywood Studios? If so, it seems like this virtual queuing system will be very similar.

What have we learned from the launch at Shanghai Disneyland?

  • Guests must be inside the park with their entire party, and in their park app to select a Disney Standby Pass.
  • The Standby Pass provides a 1-hour window to get in line for the attraction.
  • Once your time comes around, a Cast Member will scan your pass on your app as you enter the attraction through the normal standby line entrance.
  • Guests will not be able to wait in a normal standby line to ride the attraction, but rather must have a Standby Pass.
  • More points are available by checking out the Shanghai Disneyland page here.

Shanghai Disneyland Opens Park Reservation System To General Admission Guests

Shanghai Disneyland became the first of the Disney Parks to reopen its gates following the COVID-19 pandemic back on May 11th, debuting new protocols on ticketing and reservations which have potentially been paving the way for the rest of the parks to follow suit.

When the park first reopened, new measures were implemented to help control and limit the capacity levels in the new, socially-distanced park. Therefore, guests were only given the option to purchase specific-day tickets, and Annual Passholders were required to apply for a reservation into the park each day. Today, after three weeks of this procedure, Shanghai Disneyland has announced the option for guests with General Admission Tickets to also apply for a reservation, too. This reservation-only system is a must for park admission, so it is encouraging to see that the option has been extended to guests holding tickets without specified dates attached. The details, as per the Shanghai Disneyland reservation website, read as follows:

One-Day General Admission Ticket Advanced Reservation Procedures and Requirements

  • Guests who have purchased but have not used their one-day General Admission tickets must make a reservation for their visit date and time by clicking here, prior to their visit to the park.
  • To make a reservation, guests must enter the order number and the government ID number that were used when purchasing their tickets. Paper ticket holders must provide the ticket number which is either in 19 or 22 digits printed on the back of the ticket. If an accompanying guest is a child under the age of 3 years old or with a height of 1.0 meter and below on the day of their visit, his/her name, government ID, and a phone number of the ticket holder are required for advanced reservation.
  • Beginning at 13:00, June 1, 2020, reservations will be available to guests for park visits from June 3 through June 7. From 13:00, June 2, reservations for park visits on June 8 will be available to guests. From 13:00 every day starting June 3, we will open a six-day reservation calendar. Guests cannot make a reservation for a visit on the same date as the reservation. The reservation system will be updated at 13:00 each day, with a limited daily quota.
  • Park entry times offered will vary based on daily operations. Please visit the Advanced Reservation page for further details and to select available visitation dates and park entry times.
  • Only one reservation per time per ticket is permitted. The reservation may be cancelled or modified subject prior to activating the ticket at park entry. Available dates and times for reselection are subject to calendar and park daily operations.
  • Guests under the age of 16 years old must be accompanied by a guest aged 16 or older in order to enter the park.
  • Guests who fail to make reservations during the Advanced Reservation Period will still be able to visit the park after the Advanced Reservation Period and before the end of the validity period*.
  • Guests can call the Shanghai Disney Resort Reservation Center (400-180-0000) for more information regarding the One-Day General Admission Ticket Advanced Reservation.

*The validity period of a One-Day General Admission Ticket will be extended for the number of lost days falling between the park’s closure date of January 25, 2020 and the end of the “Advanced Reservation Period.”

Guests wanting to reserve their entry must ensure they have their government ID number handy, alongside the details of the ticket. The reservation system can be accessed here, and the verification form looks like this:
