Citricos To Be Refurbished in Grand Floridian Redesign

With Enchanted Rose now open and the Grand Floridian Orchestra officially moved into an odd corner of the lobby, work continues as part of the resort’s redesign, now with Citricos set to undergo refurbishment.

The second-floor restaurant is set to become “Victoria and Albert’s Bistro”, a slightly different dining concept that still retained the signature aspect of the restaurant.

The refurbishment for the restaurant will take place in phases, and while the space will remain open thoughout, the bar will close in February and the menu will be slightly modified while work takes place in the kitchen. Dining room renovations will begin sometime in May, with the project expected to be completed by Summer 2020.

Bob Chapek is not a fan of the look and feel of Disney’s Grand Floridian hotel. Here is an excerpt from a story from wdwnt in January 2017:

It appears Chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts Bob Chapek is not a big fan of the current Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, Walt Disney World’s flagship hotel and often most expensive per night. Similar to the recently initiated shakeup in housekeeping for Disney World, Chapek feels as if the Four Seasons Resort Orlando is putting them to shame when it comes to what a luxury resort on-property should be. So, what’s the solution? To completely gut the 28-year-old Magic Kingdom area resort, of course.

Should it come to fruition, all of the rooms and the lobby of the resort will be completely gutted and rebuilt with a more modern-luxury theme, perhaps along the lines of the new hotel being constructed at the Disneyland Resort.

As it stands now, this project may not even be in the design phase as of yet, but it seems as if it will come to fruition should Chapek remain at helm of Parks and Resorts for the foreseeable future.

While the next phase includes Citricos, we also know that the concierge level lounge in the lobby building will be getting an overhaul imminently, likely followed by the Grand Floridian Cafe.

The space that today is Citricos was once Flagler’s Restaurant, which opened on June 28, 1988. It featured Italian and continental cuisine. It closed on July 6, 1997, to become Cítricos on November 8.

Gateway Gifts Reopens @ Epcot

Gateway Gifts at EPCOT closed for a brief refurbishment earlier this week in order to even out the design elements and interior of the two stores flanking Spaceship Earth. Camera Center recently reopened with a similar new look, and it seems the same design choices were made for Gateway Gifts, with the exception of the exterior signage. That’s right, everyone’s retro favorite Gateway Gifts neon teal signage survived the refurbishment somehow. Here’s a look inside the store:

As you can see, the ground was repaved during the refurbishment. Rolling planters still line the outer edge of the store as more concrete is poured in the remainder of the pathway.

The Monorail art from the old store has also survived (albeit in purple), taking back its rightful place behind the right-hand registers.

Sleek new illuminated registers have replaced the smaller, clunkier old ones.

Test Track Closed For Refurbishment

Guests looking to design a SimCar and test-drive its capability, efficiency, responsiveness, and power in Test Track on their upcoming 2020 vacation should be aware that the high-speed attraction is now closed for refurbishment.

Cast Members and signage are scattered around the attraction’s entrance plaza. No known changes are planned for the attraction as it is simply receiving a refresh ahead of the massive Spaceship Earth planned refurbishment, where the headlining attraction will be closed to guests for an estimated two years. Do note that the dates listed may shift slightly, depending on construction plans.

The Test Track refurbishment is set to last through February 26, with the attraction reopening on February 27th.

Gateway Gifts Closing For Refurbishment

In an effort to unify all of the new store designs at EPCOT and create a smooth, streamlined merchandise experience for guests, some of the stores located near Spaceship Earth will be closing in the coming days.

Fans of the nostalgia-laced Gateway Gifts shop at the entrance to EPCOT should be informed that the store will be closing on January 13th for refurbishment. The store is set to reopen on January 19th with the addition of a package pick-up service. Directly across, the new Camera Center and Pin Traders store recently reopened with a new look.

Over at the outside of the park, on the west side of the main entrance, the Gift Stop store and package pick-up location will be closing on January 18th. The Gift Stop cart will remain open.

Blizzard Beach Refurbishment Extended

Blizzard Beach, the ski resort themed water park at Walt Disney World, closed for an extended refurbishment last September. The refurbishment was originally set to conclude on January 13th, but has since been extended past that date.

The refurbishment is now set to be completed by January 18th, with the water park reopening to guests on January 19th. Typhoon Lagoon will then close for its annual refurbishment.

Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach close every year in the winter for refurbishments during the cold weather season when water park demand is low. However, Disney has stated that this refurbishment will include “additional refurbishment work and enhancements” above the normal work. Water slide parts––reportedly for Summit Plummet––were recently seen staged at the parking lot of Blizzard Beach.
