A new trailer for Black Widow was just released by Marvel Studios to get us excited for the film’s upcoming release.
After a tumultuous year of its release getting pushed back due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Black Widow will now be released on July 9th, both in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access.
Disney has announced their newest live-action film, “Cruella” will launch on both Disney+ Premier Access and in theaters.
Disney shared along with the film announcement: “Today’s announcement reflects our focus on providing consumer choice and serving the evolving preferences of audiences. By leveraging a flexible distribution strategy in a dynamic marketplace that is beginning to recover from the global pandemic, we will continue to employ the best options to deliver The Walt Disney Company’s unparalleled storytelling to fans and families around the world,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution.
Academy Award winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Check out the trailer below if you’ve missed it!
Marvel Studios just announced that the highly anticipated Black Widow film will now premiere in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9.
Bob Chapek stated recently that this hybrid release may still be possible in a recent interview. Black Widow was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on May 1, 2020. Until today, the film was scheduled for a theatrical only release on May 7, 2021, although rumors did circulate about a possible hybrid release.
Disney+ Premier Access allows subscribers to pay an extra one-time fee to gain access to a film before it premieres for all users on the streaming service.
We all know it’s been an interesting year since March 2020 when COVID-19 rocked the world… and continues to keep us on our toes. Theaters took a huge hit, but it seems like they are slowly but surely beginning to welcome more and more guests back. Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon recently hit select theaters and also released via Disney+ Premier Access. The question now is how will Disney release their next big film, Black Widow? It looks like Disney has yet to make a decision.
As reported by WhatOnDisneyPlus: “The next big movie release on Disney’s movie calendar is Marvel’s “Black Widow”, which is due to be released in cinemas on May 7th. During a Bloomberg interview with Disney CEO Bob Chapek, who spoke about the reopening of Disneyland in California at the end of April, he was asked about the release of “Black Widow” in theatres and on Disney+ Premier Access.”
Chapek is quoted: “Our situation and our conditions change. Just a few weeks ago, theaters in New York and Los Angeles weren’t even open. Now, all of a sudden they’re open, so we’re waiting to see how prospective theater goers respond to these reopenings. We’re going to remain flexible. We’ll make the call probably at the last minute in terms of how these films come to market, whether it’s Black Widow or any other title.” Chapek goes on the say: “We love the theatrical window. We think it’s important for building our franchises. At the same time, we don’t think it’s the only way to do it. … We’ll see what happens over the next couple of months. So much is changing, it’s such a dynamic environment. It’s really hard to predict what’s going to happen with consumer behavior in the next month as it comes to re-emergence back into the world of normal. We’ll be watching the call carefully and make the call when we have to.”
It looks like we’ll have to wait last minute to find out how Black Widow will debut. It’s interesting to note that Warner Brothers and Universal have already laid out their plans for 2021. We’ll just have to wait and see if Disney+ Premier Access carries on for Disney’s new films.
Raya and the Last Dragon has been mega popular recently in the parks as various experiences have popped up to celebrate the film’s upcoming debut!
However, Deadline has reported that the Cinemark, the 3rd most popular movie theater in the U.S., will not be playing Raya and the Last Dragon as the movie is released on March 5th. Despite the fact that Raya will debuting both in theaters and through Premier Access on Disney+, negotiations to play the film at theaters have been difficult.
According to Deadline, Disney’s terms for playing Raya and the Last Dragon were strictly outlined. And, if theaters weren’t happy with the negotiations, they didn’t have to play the film when it was released. This will affect venues in places like New York City, whose Cinemark theaters in the five boroughs are reopening with 25% capacity.
Cinemark has released the statement that “In the current operating environment, we are making near-term booking decisions on a discrete, film-by-film basis, focusing on the long-term benefit of exhibitors, studios and moviegoers.
While we are having conversations with The Walt Disney Company, we have not yet reached agreeable licensing terms for Raya and the Last Dragon. As we continue to work with our studio partners, we remain optimistic that we will reach mutually beneficial terms that will provide moviegoers the opportunity to see the exciting film lineup in our theatres.”
At this time, Raya and the Last Dragon will open in over 2,000 theaters, including 200 IMAX screens, 360 Premium Large Format screens, 160 3D locations, and 45 D-Box/4D screens. The industry has estimated that the opening should see $6 million to $7 million in the box office.
