Three Shows Just Got the Axe From Disney

It looks as though the grim reaper himself has come for several shows on Disney+ as the entertainment giant has just given them the final axe.

Many of the shows on the Disney+ platform have been given the green light–renewed for an additional season. These include High School Musical: The Musical: The SeriesThe Santa Clauses, and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Other series on Disney+, however, have not been so lucky, and fans of those shows are not going to be happy.

Per Yahoo! Lifestyle:

Big Shot, National Treasure: Edge of History, and Willow have all received the final ax by the network, and fans are, in a word, “shocked”—and speculating that the streamer “can’t get anything Disney-branded past one or two seasons.”

Big Shot has been canceled, and that’s after just two seasons on the Disney+ streaming platform. The so-called “sports dramedy” starred John Stamos (Full House, Fuller House), who plays a men’s basketball coach who gets the boot from the NCAA and decides instead to coach girls’ basketball at an upscale private high school. The series, created by David E. Kelley, Dean Lorey, and Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond), though enjoyed by many Disney+ fans, has been canceled.

“It was reported last June that Disney’s decision to renew the show for a second season despite low viewership may have played a role in the departure of longtime Disney exec Peter Rice,” reads a report at Yahoo!. “Though Big Shot scored higher ratings in its second season, it wasn’t enough to keep the series from being taken out of the streaming game.”

Another fan-favorite show that got the axe at Disney is National Treasure: Edge of History. In response to the news, at least one viewer pointed out the fact that “Disney+ can’t get anything Disney-branded past one or two seasons.”

“Despite being one of only two Disney+ original series not related to Marvel or Star Wars to make the Nielsen’s streaming rankings with an episode,” reads the Yahoo post, “it seems the viewership was not up to Disney’s standards, and the treasure hunt was officially called off by the streamer just last month.”

National Treasure: Edge of History S1E1 on Disney+ release date

The final series to get the axe at Disney+ is one that “told the story of a group of unlikely heroes who set out to save the world 20 years after the defeat of Queen Bavmorda, shown in the original film.” The series, of course, is Willow. “The Willow television show starred Warwick Davis, reprising his role from the film as Willow Ufgood, alongside Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Tony Revolori. The series was produced by Lucasfilm and Imagine Entertainment, which had produced the original film.”

But despite its following, Disney+ has also given the Willow series the axe in the streaming world.

‘National Treasure 3’ Script Being Sent to Nicolas Cage

It seems hard to believe, but nearly 20 years ago, Disney introduced the world to Benjamin Gates, and they followed along in his journey to steal the Declaration of Independence (for a good reason of course). National Treasure starred Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, Diane Kruger as Abigail Chase, Justin Bartha as Riley Poole, Harvey Keitel as Peter Sandusky, and Jon Voight as Patrick Gates. The movie was such a hit that, 3 years later, a sequel film — National Treasure: Book of Secrets — came out. Unfortunately, that film was not as successful as the first.

Book Of Secrets ended with a lead-in to a potential third film, but sadly, that film never came to pass. However, it looks like that may be about to change. According to National Treasure producer Jerry Bruckheimer, a third script is nearly complete and will be sent to Cage! Bruckheimer spoke to Comicbook.com and told them that they have a really great script and that he hopes Cage likes it.

“Let’s hope we’re working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly,” Bruckheimer told us.

National Treasure

It was previously reported that Nic Cage had been on the outs with Disney for a while. Cage starred in several films that were unsuccessful, and said that Disney had stopped calling him. He was asked about a third National Treasure film, but he did not sound very hopeful.

This is not the only National Treasure project Disney has in the works. In March 2021, Disney greenlit a new National Treasure series for its streaming service, Disney+. The new series — called National Treasure: Edge of History — will see both Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel will return to reprise their roles as Riley Poole and Peter Sandusky. The series will also star Lisette Olivera as Jess Valenzuela and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Billie.

Although nothing is solidified yet, the creators of National Treasure: Edge of History are hopeful that Benjamin Gates makes an appearance in the series. Co-creator Marianne Wibberley said that they will do whatever it takes, including begging, to get Cage to appear on the show.

National Treasure: Edge of History does not yet have a premiere date, but is expected to be on Disney+ sometime in 2023.

The ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ Teaser Trailer Is Here!

On Friday, July 22, Disney held one of its 18 panels at Comic-Con, currently taking place in San Diego, California. During that panel, Disney shared a ton of new information on one of its newest series, National Treasure: Edge of History. The series will star Lisette Olivera as Jess — a DREAMer who sets out on a historical adventure to discover her hidden family secrets. Justin Bartha will return to his role as Riley Poole — a genius computer expert — and Harvey Keitel will return as Peter Sandusky — a kind but serious FBI agent.

We don’t know when the series is set to come to Disney+, but Disney has finally shared a teaser trailer of just what we can expect from the exciting continuation of the franchise. The teaser was first shared at Comic-Con, but now Disney has posted it on its official social media accounts, and you can check it out below!

Here is more information on National Treasure: Edge of History

The Disney+ Original series, “National Treasure” Edge of History” is an expansion of the “National Treasure” movie franchise told from the point of view of a young heroine, Jess (Lisette Olivera), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer in search of answers about her family — who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.

Again, Disney has not announced a release date for the new show, but we do know that it is being executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, alongside  Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, who wrote the scripts for both National Treasure and National Treasure: Book Of Secrets. Jon Turteltaub, who directed the original films, also executive produced and Mira Nair directed. Catherine-Zeta Jones will also have a recurring role as treasure hunter, Billie.

National Treasure Series Finally Has a Title

One of the most highly anticipated shows to come to Disney+ finally has a title! Up until now, the show based on the film series National Treasure has been known simply as “Disney’s National Treasure Series”. However, ahead of San Diego’s Comic Con where the show is hosting a panel, the official title was announced on Twitter. National Treasure: Edge of History will be the show’s moniker and it has fans excited.

Though the series won’t feature Nicholas Cage, star of the popular film franchise that the show is based off of, there will still be all of the action, suspense, and drama we have come to know and love from the movies. The logo doesn’t reveal much, but it reveals enough to know that the feel of the movies will be preserved in the show. It has been compared to “Indiana Jones-esqe adventure and intrigue” and we have to agree with that assessment, at least if the movies are any indication.

The series will feature a new generation of treasure hunters. Jess (Lisette Alexis), is a DREAMer who is determined to solve the mystery about her family’s hidden past to save an ancient Pan-American Treasure. Throughout the series she will have to outwit and outmaneuver dangers and those who seek to stop her from uncovering the truth.

Though Nicholas Cage will not be returning to his role, his co-star Justin Bartha will be reprising his role as Riley Poole on a recurring basis which will tie the new series to the films. Catherine Zeta-Jones also joins the cast to provide a bit of intrigue as a billionaire black marketeer. Lydon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, and Jordan Rodrigue will also join the series cast.

Production is currently underway, and while the series does not yet have a debut date, it is believed that the series will make its way to Disney+ in late 2022 or early 2023.

‘National Treasure’ Star To Return For Disney+ Series

Disney is currently hard at work on a new series for Disney+ based on the 2004 film, National Treasure, and its follow-up 2007 film, National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. Disney announced the series back in March 2021 — and they also shared that they wanted to be able to finally make the third film in the franchise that fans had been expecting. At the time the series was announced, no casting information was given, but we have since learned that Lisette Alexis will star as Jess Morales and Catherine Zeta-Jones will star as Billie.

It is also now being revealed that the National Treasure series will star one of the film’s original actors. Justin Bartha played Riley Poole — a computer expert — in both films. We can confirm that Bartha has signed on to officially reprise his role as Poole in the new show. Disney had stated that they wanted the show to be an expansion of the franchise, so Bartha’s character will be the definitive link between the two.

National Treasure

The new National Treasure series will focus on 20-year-old DREAMer Jess Morales, who sets off on an incredible journey to discover the secrets of her family’s history and uncover a legendary lost treasure. In addition to Bartha, Alexis, and Zeta-Jones, the series will also star Lyndon Smith as Agent Ross, Armando Riesco as Agent Hendricks, and Tommy Savas as Dr. Zeke Hudson.

National Treasure

The Disney series is currently filming in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is being produced by legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer — who also produced the first two National Treasure films. Bruckheimer has also confirmed that is he one of the producers of the third National Treasure film, which has only been announced at this time. Rick Muirragui will serve as both a writer and an executive producer. Cormac and Marianne Wibberley — who were the writers on the first two films — are also returning to write the series and executive produce.

National Treasure

Disney has not announced a Disney+ premiere date for the new National Treasure series, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2023. At this time, we do not know if Bartha, or costars Nicolas Cage or Diane Kruger, will also be returning for the third National Treasure movie.
