Pinocchio Live-Action To Be Directed By Robert Zemeckis

Hot off the heels of the live-action Bambi announcement, Deadline reports that Pinocchio will be the next live-action Disney film. While there have been no casting announcements, Robert Zemeckis is signed on to direct and co-write the film with Chris Weitz.

This is not Disney’s first attempt at a Pinocchio live-action remake. A couple years ago, it was announced that Paddington 2 director Paul King would helm a Pinocchio remake. King exited the production in January 2019 and nothing has been heard of the film since then.

A draft of the script penned by Chris Weitz and Simon Farnaby currently exists and will be re-written by Weitz and Zemeckis. Chris Weitz previously wrote the script for Disney’s live-action Cinderella remake.

The original 1940 Pinocchio was Walt Disney Animation Studios’ second full-length animated feature after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It follows puppet Pinocchio, who comes to life after his creator, Geppetto, wishes on a star. Pinocchio goes on an adventure with his conscience, Jiminy Cricket, to must prove himself brave, truthful, and unselfish so he can become a real boy.

The original Pinocchio cost $2.289 million to produce, twice as much as Snow White, but only recouped $1 million by the end of 1940, surprising Walt Disney Animation Studios. After multiple re-releases, the film has now garnered $85 million in the box office.

We do not yet know when the live-action Pinocchio will be released, but Disney has dates lined up for live-action releases through December 2023, so we can expect to see the film taking one of these slots.

Bambi To Get a Live Action Remake

According to Variety, a live-action remake of “Bambi” is in the works and will be Disney’s latest animated film to get the live-action treatment. Geneva Robertson-Dworet, from “Captain Marvel”, and Lindsey Beer, from “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser” will be in charge of the screenplay and Depth of Field will produce.

Remaking animated films into live-action has proved to be big business for Disney, grossing $8.2 billion since “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010. Other live-action remakes with scheduled release dates are “Mulan” in 2020 and “Cruella” in 2021.

“Bambi”, originally released in 1942, follows the deer of the same name through trials and tribulations. The original animated film grossed $267.4 million at the box office.

Disney To Make Live-Action Fox & The Hound

Those who grew up watching The Fox and the Hound should get ready to sob all over again.

Disney is reportedly in the early stages of developing a live-action remake of the 1981 animated classic for a new generation of fans. Though nothing has been confirmed by the studio as of yet, the film is likely to land on the Disney Plus streaming platform.

The voices of Mickey Rooney, Kurt Russell, Pearl Bailey, Jack Albertson, Sandy Duncan, Jeanette Nolan, Pat Buttram, John Fiedler, John McIntire, Dick Bakalyan, Paul Winchell, Keith Mitchell, and Corey Feldman were all featured in the film. It’s unknown who will make up the cast this time around, but it’s likely that Disney will manage to nab some big stars.

Since many of the characters are animals, the reboot will be likely be done in a style similar to the highly successful reimagining of The Lion King. This means that all of the characters onscreen will probably be hyper-realistically animated. Unlike the aforementioned film, however, there are actually humans in the original Fox and the Hound as well. Because of this, the studio will likely blend CGI with real actors, just as they did for Dumbo and are expected to do for the upcoming Bambi remake.

Stay tuned to any new updates on this or other projects.
