As visitors embark on the Kilimanjaro Safaris expedition, they step into a specially designed safari vehicle that takes them on a thrilling ride through an expansive African reserve. The attraction aims to recreate the experience of an actual safari, complete with the sights, sounds, and sensations of the African wilderness.

The highlight of Kilimanjaro Safaris is the opportunity to encounter a diverse array of African wildlife up close. Guests can spot animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and many others as they roam freely within their habitats. The authenticity of the landscapes and the presence of these majestic creatures create a sense of awe and wonder that’s unparalleled.

Beyond its entertainment value, Kilimanjaro Safaris offers educational insights into the importance of wildlife conservation and habitat preservation. The attraction’s knowledgeable guides provide guests with interesting facts about the animals, their behaviors, and the conservation efforts aimed at protecting their natural habitats. This aspect of the attraction makes it both entertaining and informative, allowing visitors to develop a deeper appreciation for the animal kingdom and the need to safeguard it.

One of the unique aspects of Kilimanjaro Safaris is the dynamic and unpredictable nature of each expedition. The animals are free to roam and interact as they would in the wild, which means that no two safari experiences are the same. Guests might witness animals engaged in playful interactions, relaxing in the shade, or even participating in feeding sessions, adding an element of surprise to every journey.

Kilimanjaro Safaris goes beyond visual encounters, engaging multiple senses to create an immersive experience. Guests can hear the calls of the animals, feel the sway of the safari vehicle as it traverses uneven terrain, and even catch a whiff of the savannah’s distinct scents. Guest Captures ‘Lion King’ Moment During Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safaris

Walt Disney World Resort is home to four amazing theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT.

Each Disney Park is known for something different, and no two will give Guests the same experience. Magic Kingdom is the classic and most popular Park, Hollywood Studios is home to some of Walt Disney World’s most thrilling adventures, and EPCOT is known for celebrating cultures worldwide.

As for Animal Kingdom, Walt Disney World doesn’t get any wilder. Between areas to explore such as Discovery Island, real animals along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, and attractions such as Avatar Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, this theme park is one of Disney’s most diverse.

The environmentally conscious themes of conservation and informative attractions go hand in hand. But the attraction that really focuses Guests’ attention onto conservation is Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Kilimanjaro Safaris takes Guests on a safari ride around Animal Kingdom’s 110-acre space, which has been divided into environments mimicking African Savannas, wetlands, and forests. The Walt Disney Imagineers have done a fantastic job designing these biomes out of Florida’s diverse environment.

On this open-aired adventure, Guests can see real-life animals of the African Savanna, such as giraffes, zebras, elephants, and of course, lions.

Out of all 34 species that call this attraction their home, the lion may be the most exciting…if you’re lucky. Because the entertainment at this attraction is made up of live animals (not animatronics like in Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise attraction) all encounters will be different. Some will be more lively than others, and much of it depends on the time of day to visit.

One Guest recently visited during the evening and caught something straight out of Disney’s The Lion King (1994).

In this video, the lion repeatedly vocalizes and growls as the safari vehicle rolls past, giving Guests a Kilimanjaro Show of a lifetime! Seeing as lions are nocturnal predators, they are most active during dusk or dawn, explaining why this lion was giving Guests a performance on the evening this video was taken.

Hundreds of Guests are forced to use ladders, evacuate Kilimanjaro Safari trucks

Guests enjoying a popular attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom were met with an unexpected turn of events that led to them disembarking the ride vehicle and walking back to the loading zone.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of the most popular, family-friendly attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Disney must have known that the majority of Guests probably won’t have the opportunity to travel to the savannas of Africa and go on safari. So Disney brought the safari to them.

As part of the attraction, Guests board large trucks that have been outfitted to create a more rough-and-tumble ride experience as the trucks follow a pathway through different animal areas that are reminiscent of the different settings in Africa, such as the African savanna. Guests are treated to views of wildlife roaming freely, as more than 30 species of animals are featured on the safari experience, including the okapi, cheetah, hyena, lion, greater Kudu, the springbok, hippos, white rhinos, and more.

It’s a relaxing attraction for wildlife lovers of all ages that provides a much-needed break from the busy-ness of the parks and from the miles of walking Guests do in a day at Disney. That is, until something goes wrong.

Because the attraction is centered around wildlife, things don’t always go as planned. When sleepy giraffes decide to take their afternoon siestas by standing directly in the way of Disney’s safari trucks, there’s not much that can be done, except for the exercise of patience. If the animals stay on the pathway for a long time, animal keepers will often arrive to offer them a bite of their favorite snack, thus enticing them to move away from the pathway so trucks can continue chauffering Guests throughout the experience.

But occasionally, there are issues that don’t involve the wildlife, like this one.

A video posted by @purely_katelin shows the pathway lined with Disney safari trucks as far as can be seen. Guests from each truck are being evacuated from the vehicles and are asked to use a ladder to disembark from the trucks. (They sit up much higher off the ground than you might think!)

evacuation kilimanjaro safaris

It’s a chaotic scene as Guests climb out of the trucks and gather around moving toward Cast Members who are working to give instructions throughout the evacuation, and it’s clear that neither the Guest with the camera or anyone near her really knows the cause for the evacuation. At one point in the video, @purely_katelin says that they were stuck in the lions’ area of the attraction for 40 minutes before the evacuation.

A Cast Member can also be heard saying, “put those cameras away for me please,” as she directs Guests as they leave the vehicles. Guests have to walk through the cattle guards that provide boundaries for the animals so they are contained in designated areas of the experience. Soon it becomes clear that Guests are going to have to “walk the rest of the way” through the safari. Still, no one knows why, until a little later . . .

As Guests file past the safari truck at the front of the line of vehicles, it becomes very apparent that a problem with the lead vehicle has caused the complete traffic jam in Africa that day. The lead truck was disabled, and vehicles behind it were unable to move forward because the pathway is only wide enough for one vehicle to pass at a time.

It’s difficult when something goes awry at the Parks, but Cast Members are usually very helpful in moving Guests to safety and ensuring that during a less-than-magical time, the magic is completely spoiled. Here’s hoping Katelin and all the Guests who evacuated went on to have a great day and a “wild” time at Animal Kingdom!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park Announces Arrival of Healthy Baby White Rhino

There’s been another rhino birth at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park!

From a Disney Cast Member;

It’s always a momentous occasion to share news of a successful animal birth at Walt Disney World Resort. Today, I would like to introduce you to an adorable baby white rhino, born to first-time mom Jao backstage at Disney’s Animal KingdomTheme Park. Mom and baby are doing great under the keepers’ watchful and joyful eyes. I am happy to report that the beautiful calf snuggled up to mom and began nursing right away.

While we give Jao and her baby boy ample time to bond, it will be a little while before we know the calf’s weight. Typically, white rhino calves can weigh as much as 140 pounds at birth. Did you know that the majestic rhinos are the world’s second-largest land animal?

Rhinoceros also have one of the longest gestation periods of any mammal – approximately 16 to 18 months. Our animal care team’s veterinarians, scientists and animal keepers kept a close eye on Jao throughout her pregnancy, conducting regular checkups and ultrasounds to ensure a safe birth.

Jao was paired with dad Dugan, the bull of the herd, through one of the Species Survival Plans, which are overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to ensure the responsible breeding of endangered species. This birth is a true milestone for this endangered species. And our herd continues to grow. This delivery marks the 12th rhino born at Disney, and the second rhino born in the last year. And even more hooves are on the horizon as another first-time mom, Lola, is expected to give birth this fall.

In the coming weeks, Jao and baby are expected to join the “crash” (a group of rhinos), in their habitat on the Harambe Wildlife Reserve where park guests can catch a glimpse of the herd while aboard Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Baby Masai Giraffe Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Another Masai giraffe has been born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which welcomed two Masai giraffe calves last year.

The calf was born on June 10 and is six feet tall and weighs 183 pounds. According to Scott Terrell, Director of Animal & Science Operations, he’s “playful, curious and pretty chill” and has been spending lots of time with mom, Lily. He has a unique butterfly marking on his right shoulder and heart-shaped markings throughout his coat.

Due to poaching and habitat destruction, there are only 35,000 Masai giraffes currently in the wild with a declining population. This birth is another success for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan Program.

Lily and her calf will join the herd on Kilimanjaro Safaris in the coming weeks.
