Disneyland honors fallen marine who gave the ultimate sacrifice

Both Disneyland and Walt Disney World hold a special ceremony every evening. It’s part of a long-standing tradition in the parks, and as such, the ceremony takes place most days of the year, not just on special occasions. But earlier this week, the ceremony took on an even more special meaning at Disneyland’s Town Square.

Disneyland’s Flag Retreat Ceremony is part of a normal day at Disneyland Park in California. The ceremony is a way of honoring all those who have served in the United States Armed Forces–those who have served in the past and those who are currently serving their country.

Earlier this week, however, the Flag Retreat Ceremony at Disneyland Park’s Town Square was held to honor and pay respect to the family of the late Lance Cpl. Dylan Ryan Merola. Lance Cpl. Merola gave the ultimate sacrifice a year ago as he served during the U. S. evacuation of Afghanistan. He was just 20 years old.

Merola lost his life on August 26, 2021, as did twelve other servicemen and servicewomen who were participating in the evacuation from the south-central Asian country, named “Operation Freedom’s Sentinel,” during an attack outside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.

The 13 servicemembers who lost their lives represented three branches of the U. S. Armed Forces. According to a press release from the Department of Defense, eleven Marines, one Navy corpsman, and one soldier “were killed as the result of an enemy attack while supporting non-combatant evacuation operations.”

According to Disney Parks Blog, several of those closest to Merola were in attendance at the Flag Retreat Ceremony:

In attendance were Cpl. Merola’s mother, Cheryl Rex, his grandparents, sister, and brother Brandon, who days earlier graduated from the Marine Corps Boot Camp. Cpl. Merola grew up locally in Rancho Cucamonga and often visited the Disneyland Resort with his family.

“It meant so much to me to honor my son,” Ms. Rex said. “Growing up, we attended a lot of things at Disneyland, and it’s very meaningful here. It’s a special place to us.”

During the Flag Retreat Ceremony, Lance Cpl. Merola was posthumously presented with the Navy Achievement Medal by Marine Master Sgt. Patrick Hause. The honor recognizes the brave and heroic actions demonstrated by those in the U. S. Armed Forces during specific situations.

In September 2021, Lance Cpl Merola was praised by his family and friends for his bravery and his generosity during his funeral service. Merola was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Pendleton in his home state of California.

Queen Anna Communicates In Sign Language With Guest

Via DisDining.com

For many people, one of the highlights of their Disney vacation is all the incredible characters they will get to meet. Some people look forward to meeting the Fab 5 — Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto. Others can’t wait to speak with their favorite princesses, with people waiting in long lines to meet two of the most popular princesses, Queen Anna and Elsa from FrozenFrozen came out in theaters in 2013, but it remains nearly as popular as it was back then. For one young Guest, meeting Queen Anna was an experience that she will never forget.

11-year-old Zoe Tapley, who is deaf, recently visited Disneyland Resort with her family and family friends. While there, Zoe approached Queen Anna and used American Sign Language to say “Hello” to her. To everyone’s shock, Queen Anna signed back, asking the family if she could sign to Zoe. From there, the two had a wonderful conversation about Zoe’s trip and what rides she liked to go on. Zoe’s parents said that they typically need to be the ones to translate for her.

Zoe’s parents sat down with CBS This Morning to talk about what that moment meant for them and for Zoe.

This trip was Zoe’s second trip to Disneyland. But according to her mom, this was the first time she has had an interaction with a character that knew ASL, the Uplift reported.

“I only tell you the whole story because I feel it needs to be told,” said Tapley. “What if, for a second today, we saw someone and went out of our way to love on them? To smile or buy their coffee. What if a kind word about their shoes was just what they needed? Or that soft, knowing smile to a stressed-out mom at a target made her feel seen.”

Tapley’s message for everyone:

“Take some time today to slow down.

SEE THOSE AROUND YOU!

It is life-changing for us and others.”

When Princess Anna can sign and have a full conversation with my deaf child. 🥹 Zoe has never been able to chat with a princess without Jesse or myself interpreting. This was magical. Not only was the family shocked to see a character who was fluent, but so was Zoe. At one point, Anna signed an autograph for a Guest and Zoe turned to the camera, signed “Wow!” and smiled. She and Anna then hugged and posed for a photo.

To say we are thankful is an understatement. Really the best way to sum it up is WOW!!!! 🤩 #WeStickTogether #PostitAffirmations #disneyfamily #deaftiktok #deafkidsrock

A New Haunted Mansion LEGO Set Just Released

It’s safe to say that one of the most iconic Disney attractions is The Haunted Mansion. The ride was a passion project of Walt’s and a version of the haunted house exists at Disneyland and Disney World, where it is called The Haunted Mansion. There is also Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris and Mystic Manor at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. Guests just can’t get enough of the happy haunts who live in the mansions, and who doesn’t love to hum “Grim Grinning Ghosts” while they attend a swinging wake?

The Haunted Mansion is so popular that Disney has teamed up with LEGO several times to create a unique LEGO set. Most recently, LEGO created a replica of the Haunted Mansion that can be found in New Orleans Square at Disneyland Park. The set is designed to look just like the southern manor, complete with columns in the front. When you turn the house around, the wake scene is featured. The set even comes with its very own Ghost Host!

Disney Waiting For Economy to Fail, Experts Say

Via InsideTheMagic.net

Walt Disney World Resort is actively waiting for the economy to fail, according to reports from experts in the field.

Many Disney Park fans who have visited Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios over the past couple of years have taken notice of changes in operations over that time.

Many have noticed that Disney is not quite as clean as they remember it. Others have reported unsightly damage. Many other fans have talked about price increases and merchandise failures.

However, one thing that continues to be at the top of everyone’s mind is Disney annual passes.

Disney paused its selling of annual passes nearly a year ago and other than a small window where passes appeared to be for sale a couple of months ago (it turned out to be a false alarm), they have remained unavailable for Disney Guests.

While many have wondered when these might become available again, a couple of Disney insiders recently explained that the company has no incentive to bring them back right now and they likely won’t, until an economic collapse occurs according to reports from Florida Politics.

“Disney doesn’t have much of a reason to bring back the full slate of annual passes right now. Disney World is generating record revenue and operating profits with fewer guests than before,” said Rick Munarriz, an analyst for the investment website The Motley Fool who regularly writes about Disney Parks. “Disney’s annual passes will come back when the global economy buckles to the point that visitors can no longer pay the cover charge for a Disney gated attraction.”

Another Disney expert echoed those same sentiments.

“The thing that might bring back APs sooner rather than later is an economic slowdown. Airfare is pretty expensive right now, so getting here is costly,” said Len Testa who runs Touring Plans“I could see a situation where, say, kids go back to school in September/October, and fewer people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on airfare for a long weekend. In that case, Disney would look to locals to make up the difference, especially in things like restaurant revenue.”

Disney Parks are currently running at capacity and it wouldn’t make sense for Disney to attempt to bring in more Guests when it is already operating with such volume.

While fans may be hoping for Disney annual passes– which include the Pixie Dust Pass, Pirate Pass, Sorcerer Pass, and Incredi Pass– it seems they may have to wait until an unfortunate collapse of the economy for them to return.

Here’s what Disney says about its annual passes:

Annual Passes allow you to enjoy the magic all year long. Now is the time to answer the call and discover all the possibilities a Walt Disney World Annual Pass can bring.

To enter a theme park, each passholder must have a theme park reservation in addition to a valid pass. Park reservations are limited and are subject to availability and applicable pass blockout dates.

New sales of select Annual Passes are currently paused. Please check disneyworld.com/pass for the latest updates.

Jungle Cruise Water Turned Bright Pink

When riding Disney’s world-famous Jungle Cruise in Adventureland, you see a lot of things. You see Indian and African elephants, you see exotic plant life, you meet the Nile crocodile Ginger (be careful, she snaps), and you see Trader Sam’s Lost and Found. One thing you don’t expect to see on your boat ride is pink water. However, that’s exactly what Guests riding the attraction at Disneyland Resort saw. They were shocked and intrigued, and now we are finally learning what happened that caused the water to turn the strange shade.

On July 18, the Twitter account Fresh Baked! (@FreshBakedDisney) shared a picture of the shockingly pink water.

Twitter users were intrigued by what possibly could have caused it. Some said maybe it was a fluid leak from one of the boats. Another person took a funnier approach and said that it was someone who didn’t listen to their Skipper. However, we now have an official answer to exactly what happened to make the water look like someone help a special gender reveal.

The Orange County Register spoke to Disneyland officials, who said that it was routine water maintenance. Per The OCR

Select locations at Disneyland underwent water treatment on Monday, July 18 that resulted in the water turning a purple/pink tint, according to Disneyland officials.

No Disneyland guests rode on the Jungle Cruise attraction during the temporary water treatment process, according to Disneyland officials.

The Jungle Cruise was closed for a short period of time on Monday as part of a standard water treatment process used to treat bodies of water throughout the Disneyland resort. The pink waters dissipated within a few hours and the attraction returned to normal operation later in the day.

Sean Patrick, a computer programmer from Pismo Beach, speculated on Twitter that the pink stuff in the Jungle Cruise river could be potassium permanganate, a chemical used to treat wastewater, combat rust buildup and remove rotten egg smells from the water.

Because the Jungle Cruise — like every Disneyland attraction — gets so much use, routine maintenance must take place. Sometimes, Disneyland is forced to shut the ride down for days or weeks. Luckily, this treatment was quick, and the ride was only down for a few hours. If you are visiting Disneyland Resort, you can always check the Disneyland app for current ride closures at both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.
