Disney Springs Hotels To Remain Closed Through April 30th

Despite Walt Disney World’s still-advertised reopening date of April 1, recent developments seem to point to the inevitable extension of that date, as more and more people are encouraged (or otherwise mandated) to stay home to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While Disney normally leads the pack in terms of setting established dates for openings, it seems certain companies have moved ahead with prolonging their closures.

Over in Disney Springs, the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace has since announced that the hotel will be closed through April 30, signaling the first of potentially many more delays in opening as the Orlando tourism area hunkers down for the epidemic. Guests booked through Costco Travel recently received this email informing them of the closure:

The Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace, while independently run by Hilton, is considered an Official Walt Disney World Hotel, located in the immediate Disney Springs area. In the email sent to guests, as well as on the COVID-19 advisory landing page on the hotel’s website, it is mentioned that the hotel will not reopen until April 30th. It is likely that many other hotels in the area will follow suit.

The April 30th date puts the current closure estimate past the original April 1st date, and even past projections for mid-April as was previously assumed. Over in California, various leading theme parks have already announced closures through mid-May. No official statements have been issued by The Walt Disney Company regarding a revised reopening date.

Disney Springs, Downtown Disney, & Disney Stores Now Closed; All WDW Resorts Will Close March 20th

Now that all of the parks are closed, Disney Parks has further announced that all Walt Disney World Resort hotels will be temporarily closing at 5:00 PM on Friday, March 20, due to concerns over the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Additional closures include all Disney owned-and-operated locations at Downtown Disney and Disney Springs (including the NBA Experience) which started on March 17. Individual tenants will be allowed to make decisions on whether to continue or adjust operations, such as Starbucks’ new “to-go” model.

All Disney Stores also closed on March 17. Guests are encouraged to shop online via shopDisney.

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort will also be closing on March 20. Until further notice, the only two Disney properties that remain open in the US is Disney’s Hilton Head Resort and Aulani. Earlier today, the CDC issued new guidelines recommending against public gatherings of 50 or more people. It was unsure how it would affect the remaining resorts, but it appears that Disney is heeding the CDC’s warnings. While park closures are only scheduled to last through the end of the month, additional recommendations from the CDC recommend closures of 8 weeks. It is not known when the parks and resorts will reopen to guests.

We’ll be keeping our eyes on developments here in Florida and in California, as well as in Paris, and Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong regarding the COVID-19 outbreak’s effect on Disney Parks operations and beyond.

Guest Commits Suicide At A Location Around Contemporary Resort

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a woman jumped from an undisclosed location at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in what has been deemed an apparent suicide. The woman was found dead by the authorities once they arrived on scene.

As far as an official statement, all that OCSO has publicly released is the following:

“At this time, we believe this was a suicide, and we have no other information to release.”

Witnesses aboard the Monorail are stating that they saw someone fall from the resort within view of the Monorail.
