Bob Iger Hints At Protocol For When The Parks Reopen

Disney Parks have been closed indefinitely for weeks now due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While right now, the biggest question might be when the parks will reopen, there’s the inevitable follow-up question: What’s it going to be like when the parks do reopen? With social distancing guidelines in place and likely to be extended, plus face masks quickly becoming the new norm, one has to wonder what a post-pandemic park will look like. In a recent interview with Barron’s, former CEO Bob Iger shed light on what the future of Disney Parks might be like upon reopening.

In his interview with Barron’s, Iger prided himself in the fact that once this all ends, the parks will be a place “for the public to enjoy and escape to––maybe in ways they will appreciate it more than they ever have.” However, knowing the new health and safety regulations in place, there may well be some changes. Iger spoke on the status of the parks after they reopen post-pandemic:

“One of the things that we’re discussing already is that in order to return to some semblance of normal, people will have to feel comfortable that they’re safe. Some of that could come in the form ultimately of a vaccine, but in the absence of that it could come from basically, more scrutiny, more restrictions. Just as we now do bag checks for everybody that goes into our parks, it could be that at some point we add a component of that that takes people’s temperatures, as a for-instance.

We’re studying very carefully what China has been trying to do in terms of their return to normalcy. And one of the things that’s obvious is they’ve conscripted a large segment of their population to monitor others in terms of their health. You can’t get on a bus or a subway or a train or enter a high-rise building there—and I’m sure this will be the case when their schools reopen—without having your temperature taken.

So we’ve asked ourselves the question, let’s prepare for a world where our customers demand that we scrutinize everybody. Even if it creates a little bit of hardship, like it takes a little bit longer for people to get in. Just as the case after 9/11 where people ultimately lived with the notion that in order for them to enter a building, if you’re in an office building you have to show a picture ID or get your picture taken and be screened. Or in order to enter a park you have to put your bags out there to be checked and you go through some kind of metal detector. Or certainly what’s going on in airports with the TSA.”

Many park guests may remember heightened safety restrictions throughout the parks after 9/11. Currently, guests at Shanghai Disney Resort are required to undergo temperature screening procedures upon their arrival. Them must also present their Health QR Code when entering dining venues, and are required to wear a mask during their entire visit. Guests are also reminded to maintain social distancing at all times while in stores, queues, and restaurants.

Iger also stressed the notion of ensuring that guests feel safe, and rebooting the company as efficiently as possible upon reopening:

“I don’t think we’re ever going to see a return to business as usual in the sense that, I can’t speak for all companies, but Disney will take this opportunity to look for ways to run our businesses more efficiently when we come back. So what we’re doing is thinking, OK, as things start to return, one, what must we address in terms of making people feel safe, but secondly, what must we address in terms of running the company more efficiently, given what we believe business conditions will dictate.”

How this will all be implemented in a place where guests have long been conditioned to “fill in all of the available space” is unknown, but if it means adapting to a new form of existence within the parks, we’re sure many guests will be quick to learn just to get back into their happy place.

Iger also commented on other pending topics, such as the current state of films already in production. While they’re opting to simply “wait for slots” for some of their bigger films, “there may be a few more” films that end up getting released on Disney+, as we’ve already seen with Onward, and soon enough, Artemis Fowl. You can read the full interview here.

Disney Parks Honor Health Medical Workers

Yesterday, April 7th, was World Health Day! This is a day we celebrate nurses, doctors and healthcare teams for their dedicated work in keeping all of us healthy! During this time of COVID-19, we are especially thankful for their commitment to tackle this global pandemic. Disney is making this day extra special by honoring those on the front line. We are uniting across the globe with a message of thanks and appreciation to celebrate the brave healthcare providers who are helping so many.

The celebration kicked off at Shanghai Disney Resort, where the Enchanted Storybook Castle lit up with the words “thank you” in numerous languages for medical professionals all over the world.

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Dr. Mark Penning – Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team – shared a special “thank you” from his entire team of animal caregivers, scientists and environmental specialists.

At Disneyland Resort, Custodial cast members expressed their heartfelt gratitude at the “Storytellers” statue and at Paradise Gardens Park in Disney California Adventure.

Shining brightly on behalf of all of the Disney Stores around the world, a heartfelt message of thanks lit up the billboards above the Disney Store in Times Square in New York City.

At Castaway Cay, there was a special island appreciation shared from Disney Cruise Line, spelling the words “thank you” using flip flops.

As an expression of gratitude, our ohana at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa shared a heartfelt “mahalo” message.

Over at Walt Disney Imagineering, a fitting “thank you” was shared for medical professionals all over the world.

We’re reminded of a quote: “Every step we take, brings a new hope, a new day…” It’s from the Happily Ever After fireworks show at Walt Disney World Resort, and we hope it serves as an inspiration to you, as does for us, during this uncertain time.

Disney Donates Supplies to Hospitals & Medical Professionals

If there is something positive to emerge from the current public health crisis, it is the coming together of people to help people. The amazing stories of both individuals and companies filling needs where they are able have been a source of joy. Disney is at it again, this time stepping up to help our medical heroes in the midst of shortages of critical medical supplies, specifically personal protective equipment. First and foremost, we applaud every medical hero out there, literally risking their own health and lives to serve the needs of others. We also applaud companies like Disney jumping in to help. Check out the details of this very clever way. Disney is clearing out its supplies to help the medical community.

Here are all the details from a Disney Cast Member:

Since taking the unprecedented steps of closing our theme parks and stores and suspending our cruises, we have continued to focus on ways we can make a difference during this time.

In response to requests from hospitals that are in need of additional protective garments and medical-related supplies, Disney Parks has donated 150,000 rain ponchos to MedShare, a humanitarian aid organization, for distribution to hospitals in need. The idea was inspired by nurses across the country who inventively found that rain ponchos can be an excellent way to protect their clothing and prolong the use of PPE, while also freeing up gowns when needed.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is unlike anything we’ve seen before,” said Charles Redding, MedShare CEO and President. “We have to find ways to pool our resources and work together to help the healthcare workers who are doing their very best to treat patients and contain COVID-19. We appreciate Disney partnering with us to support hospitals and healthcare workers on the frontlines.”

Disney Parks also recently donated more than 100,000 N95 masks to the states of New York, California and Florida, and is finding additional ways to give back.

These efforts follow the recent donation of more than 270 tons of food to local food banks from Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, Disneyland Paris, and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. Since March, Disney Parks have provided nearly $3M in in-kind donations benefitting communities around the globe.

Disney Parks has a longstanding history of helping hospitals and communities, dating back to the 1930s, when Walt, himself, took Disney characters and animators on outreach visits. Sharing the magic of Disney continues today through contributions, collaborating with nonprofit organizations, in-kind gifts, and employee volunteerism. These are some of the ways Disney brings positive, lasting change to communities around the world.
