Disney Cruise Line Unveils New Design Concept for the Disney Wish

While we’re awaiting the Disney Cruise Line’s virtual reveal of their newest ship, Disney Wish, at the end of this month (April 29), Disney has released a new design concept in advance!

As shared by Disney: The design of the Disney Wish centers around a motif Enchantment! How this motif is expressed throughout the design will be as much a reflection of the ship’s distinctive personality as of the wide range of stories that will be represented on board, from Disney and Pixar to Marvel and Star Wars. Take a look at this video – the first in our Designing the Disney Wish series:

The design image of the Grand Hall was previously released as follows:

Now, the new art rendering is revealed as the following:

Disney Cruise Line Suspends Select Sailings Through October 9

Disney Cruise Line announced today a travel update regarding upcoming sailings. We’re sad to report that Disney Magic sailings through October 9 have been suspended. All Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wonder departures through June 2021 are currently suspended as well.

As reported by Disney Cruise Line today (April 15): “We are cancelling all Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wonder sailings departing through June 2021. We have canceled Disney Magic sailings through October 9, 2021. The Disney Magic will set sail in the United Kingdom for a limited time this summer on short voyages limited to UK residents, pending the issuance of UK Government guidelines and authorizations.

In light of the Canadian government’s announcement that they will not allow ships with more than 100 passengers to dock in any Canadian port until February 28, 2022, we continue to evaluate various options for the Disney Wonder’s scheduled season in Alaska.

Additionally, as previously shared, based on the conditional sail order provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Disney Cruise Line has canceled sailings longer than 7 nights.”

Florida Senators Introduce Legislation to Override CDC Cruise Guidelines

U.S. Senators have introduced legislation that would override the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) current cruise guidelines, which include test voyages, vaccination plans, and agreements with ports and local health authorities before cruise lines would be able to resume operations.

Florida Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio and Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, all Republicans, introduced the CRUISE (Careful Resumption Under Improved Safety Enhancements) Act on Tuesday, April 13. This is just days after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis filed a lawsuit against the CDC regarding the same cruise guidelines.

The Cruise Act would require the CDC to revoke their existing guidelines—which were updated April 2—by July 4. An inter-agency “working group” would develop a new set of cruise recommendations, also by July 4, the latest possible date that cruises could resume operations. This group would be comprised of secretaries of Transportation, Homeland Security, and Commerce, along with industry representatives.

“While many sectors of the economy have been safely operating for months under CDC guidelines, Floridians, and those across the nation that rely on the cruise industry for work, continue to wait for updated guidance from the CDC,” Senator Scott said in a statement. “The CDC’s refusal to properly address this shutdown is wrong, and it’s time to get the cruise lines open safely.”

“Floridians and many other Americans who are employed by ports, cruise operators, or work in hospitality jobs near cruise terminals face an uncertain future because of the CDC’s unresponsiveness to requests for guidance by stakeholder groups,” Senator Rubio said in a statement. “I am proud to join Senators Sullivan and Scott in introducing legislation that would require the CDC to provide guidance to safely resume operations this summer, and allow Florida’s economy to recover even further.”

U.S. Representative Maria Elvira Salazar, also Republican, plans to introduce similar legislation in the House of Representatives. In a statement, Salazar said, “This legislation will fix the CDC’s arbitrary guidelines and give clarity and fairness to the industry that creates hundreds of thousands of jobs throughout Miami’s entire tourism economy.”

Last week, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said that he would like to resume cruises this summer but that they present their own set of logistical and health challenges.

“Airplanes have one safety profile; cruise ships have another, vehicles have another,” Secretary Buttigieg said. “And each one needs to be treated based on what’s safe for that sector. I’ll tell you, I certainly care a lot about seeing the cruise sector thrive. And I know that the CDC is hopeful that a lot of these operators will be in a position to be sailing by mid-summer.”

Disney Cruise Line has most recently canceled all sailings through June 2021 and some European cruises through mid-September. “Disney Magic At Sea” U.K. cruises are planned for this summer but dates have not yet been announced.

Disney Cruise Line Reaches Key Construction Milestone On Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line reached a significant construction milestone marked by the traditional keel laying ceremony of the Disney Wish, the first of three new ships in the line’s fleet expansion. Also announced today, the magic of Captain Minnie Mouse will come to life for the first time through whimsical artwork on the bow of the Disney Wish, a hallmark of Disney Cruise Line vessels.

“As we look to the future with anticipation and excitement for continuing our legacy of creating magical vacations for families across the globe, we are thrilled to reach this significant milestone in the ship building process and to unveil Captain Minnie as the beloved character on the bow of the Disney Wish,” said Thomas Mazloum, president of Disney Cruise Line.

Keel laying takes place when the first block, or section of a ship, is lowered into the building dock, and a newly minted coin is placed under the keel for good fortune. The coin created for the Disney Wish features Captain Minnie, who made her debut aboard Disney Cruise Line ships in 2019 as part of a collection of initiatives aiming to inspire the next generation of female leaders in the cruise industry.

“In maritime tradition, keel laying is the ceremonial beginning of the ship’s life,” said Philip Gennotte, portfolio project management executive, Walt Disney Imagineering Germany, who placed the coin at the ceremony.“Today marked a momentous occasion for the Disney Wish, and I could not be more proud of our Imagineers, the cast and crew at Disney Cruise Line and the team at Meyer Werft, the shipyard in Germany, who are bringing this enchanting ship to life.”

The Disney Wish is scheduled to sail its maiden voyage in summer 2022. Information on itineraries and bookings for the ship will be released at a later date.

The Disney Wish will showcase the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that only Disney can deliver. The ship will be powered by liquified natural gas, or LNG, one of the cleanest-burning fuels available. At approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, the ship will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.
