Construction Update on the Disney Wish

Via Disney Destinations

In summer 2022, the Disney Wish will sail its inaugural season of three- and four-night cruises to Nassau, Bahamas, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, from its new home port of Port Canaveral, Florida. With less than a year to go, Disney Cruise Line is busy constructing the ship and has shared an update!

“Moin” from Papenburg, Germany! I’m Philip, the portfolio project management executive for Walt Disney Imagineering Germany, responsible for overseeing the design, construction and delivery of the new class of cruise ships for Disney Cruise Line. I’m excited to be your eyes and ears on the ground here at the Meyer Werft shipyard as we bring the Disney Wish to life.

These past months have been very exciting as we continue building the Disney Wish, and I want to share details on two specific spaces the team is currently working on.

Wheelhouse Installation

The wheelhouse, also known as “the bridge,” is an incredibly important part of any ship. The captain and officers command the entire ship from this location.

The wheelhouse for the Disney Wish is nearing completion and is part of a huge block to be installed on the ship in the building dock. We have all eagerly awaited this moment, as this block will truly give the Disney Wish an identity. I would even go as far as saying that it gives our ship a face!

The wheelhouse was very carefully designed both from a navigational and functional means but also from an aesthetical point of view. With the lifting and installation of this very large and very wide block, the next milestone in the impressive construction process is achieved. The second main building part of the Disney Wish, the entire foreship, has now been constructed.

The next step will be to get the first building part, the so-called gigablock, to be “married” to the foreship. Following this, the remaining aft blocks will be lifted and installed to complete the entire ship. So more to come very soon!

Bow Installation

All the ships in our fleet have very elegant lines with sleek hulls and long bows, and the Disney Wish will certainly carry on this tradition. As construction of our newest ship is progressing at full speed, another important milestone has been achieved.

Just installed is the impressive bow of the Disney Wish, where Captain Minnie will be featured in a beautifully designed medallion and filigree. As part of the shipyard’s high-tech block building principle, the bow block has been lifted and installed to reveal the graceful bow of the Disney Wish. This block is just one of nearly 100 total blocks, and the tip of the bow alone weighs an impressive 500 metric tons!

The entire process of lifting, installing and fully welding the bow block, while being suspended from the overhead gantry crane, took just under 10 hours.

Following the successful installation of this bow block, there are just over 30 blocks remaining to be installed in the coming weeks to complete the Disney Wish in time for the ship’s maiden voyage in June 2022. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on this progress!

Photo Comparisons of Walt Disney World’s Construction Sites

2020 has been unexpected to say the least. While we put the year behind us, it’s interesting to check out some then and now photos of the current construction sites at Walt Disney World. Thanks to @bioreconstruct via Twitter aerial photo comparisons, we can check out what progress has been made on the three most popular Walt Disney World construction sites.

First up, here’s an aerial comparison of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. The first photo below is from January 1, 2020. The second photo below is from December 22, 2020.

Next, here’s an aerial comparison of TRON. The first photo below is from May 31, 2019. The second photo below is from December 22, 2020.

Next, here’s an aerial comparison of EPCOT Future World. The first photo below is from January 1, 2020. The second photo below is from December 22, 2020.

Tron Lightcycle Power Run seems to have made the most progress thus far. Doesn’t look like much progress in the other photos? Keep in mind, much of the construction was put on hold when COVID-19 hit. We’re excited to see the finished products in these areas… hopefully in time for the October 2021 50th Anniversary celebration!

Walt Disney World’s new Tron coaster, Tron Lightcylce Power Run, has been a fun one to follow along with as construction moves forward. Today, we’re sharing photos from inside the park! Here’s the latest as of October 16 as seen in Magic Kingdom!

Here are seven photos of what you’ll see as you stroll through Tomorrowland and the back part of Fantasyland as construction progresses forward.

It’s coming along! It may not look like much right now, but Disney’s art rendering is stunning as shared here:

Disney’s initial deadline was to have the coaster ready to ride in 2021 – in time to celebrate Disney’s 50th Anniversary. With the pandemic hitting, construction halted back in March but the construction resumed shortly after. Disney has not announced if there will be a delay to the opening. What we do know is it’s fun to watch the progress of the coaster as it unfolds! Want a sneak peek of what this attraction will look like? Here’s a ride through of the attraction in Shanghai Disneyland. Hold on tight!

Aerial Photos of Epcot

Epcot’s massive overhaul of Future World is well under way. With hopes for completion for Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration in late 2021, our fingers are crossed COVID-19 hasn’t put too much of a hold on progress. Thanks to @bioreconstruct Twitter we are able to take a look at construction progress via aerial photos. Check out the photos and notes as shared below by @bioreconstruct on November 1.

Aerial Construction Photo Update for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

tar Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an all-immersive, 2-night adventure, is scheduled to arrive to Walt Disney World Resort in 2021. Bioreconstruct took to Twitter to share five photos with notes of what the Galactic Starcruiser looks like in its current state (Oct. 11, 2020) as shared below.
