Disney Park closed after a singular positive COVID test set to reopen November 3

Shanghai Disney Resort, which suddenly closed its gates to any new Guests on Sunday evening, October 31, will reopen Wednesday, November 3, according to the Shanghai Disney Resort website.

The announcement reads as follows:

“Shanghai Disneyland and Disney Town will resume operations on November 3, 2021 (Wednesday). On November 3, the operating hours of Shanghai Disneyland will be 10:00-19:00, and the operating hours of Disney Town will be 10:00-21:00.
All cast and third-party staff returning to work in Shanghai Disneyland and Disney Town have completed two nucleic acid tests within 48 hours in accordance with the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, and the results are all negative, and will strictly follow the city’s epidemic prevention and control Requirements for autonomous health monitoring. All environmental samples collected were negative.”

The Resort, located in Chuansha New Town, Pudong, Shanghai, China, made the announcement after remaining closed for two days following the news that one singular visitor over the weekend had indeed tested positive for the novel coronavirus. In an effort to stop any potential spread, the Resort closed its gates and began administering COVID tests to Guests who were already on property enjoying the parks.

The move on the part of the Resort, which is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and the Shanghai Shendi Group, highlights the efforts China has been taking to keep the COVID-19 virus at bay in its country. The reaction on the part of the Disney Resort seems extreme by many accounts, but Shanghai Disney must adhere to restrictions and guidelines set forth by the Chinese government, whether Disney’s guidelines in this scenario would have called for such a closure or not.

The Shanghai Disney Resort closed at the very beginning of the pandemic after the never-before-seen COVID-19 virus was first detected in the city of Wuhan, China. It remained closed until mid-May of 2020, and even when it did reopen, the Resort welcomed Guests back in a very different environment under very different restrictions.

Though it had seen over 12 million Guests in 2019, the Chinese government only permitted the Disney Park to open its gates to 24,000 Guests per day. Disney CEO Bob Chapek had said he would lower that number further so that Cast Members could implement all the procedures and protocols that had been set in place to ward off any massive new outbreaks of the virus.

Guests returned to their beloved Chinese Disney Park devoid of parades, bare faces, and bare hands–gloves were required on many rides, and temperature checks at the gates were mandatory before entry to the parks. The park was able to increase its capacity by 50% on August 24, 2020.

Sorcerers of Magic Kingdom Is Now Closed

Are you a Sorcerer of Magic Kingdom? We previously shared the news that this interactive scavenger hunt at Magic Kingdom would be ending on January 24. Sadly, Sorcerers of Magic Kingdom has officially closed, ending the spellbinding adventure.

Disney’s comment on the closure was as follows: “Our mobile devices continue to play a vital role in the Disney theme park experience, and we are constantly innovating with new, on-the-go digital experiences, such as Magic Mobile, Play Disney Parks app and additional enhancements to My Disney Experience. With the changes in how our Guests use mobile technology in mind and decreased demand for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, we will be retiring this interactive experience on Jan. 24. Guests will have until then to cast their final spells and help Merlin to defeat the notorious Disney villains. We thank our Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom fans for their dedication and hope they’ll remember this fun experience. And of course, we thank our Cast for helping recruit sorcerers and sending them on their adventures.”

Tokyo Disneyland Closed Until March 15th Due To Coronavirus

As the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak continues to evolve, the situation in Japan has worsened, and the Oriental Land Company has given us some sad news today. For the safety of Guests and Cast Members, the Tokyo Disney Resort will be closed from February 29th through March 15th. This is the first closure of the resort since Typhoon Hagibis last year, and the first long-term closure since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

This closure applies to both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. The Ikspiari shopping mall adjacent to Tokyo Disney Resort will also be closed during this time.

Guests with the following types of tickets are eligible for a fee-free change to a ticket valid through March 31st, 2021, or for a full refund:

  • Fixed date tickets with a Park admission date within the period from February 29 to March 15, 2020.
  • Park tickets with an expiration date within the period from February 29 to March 15, 2020.

Guests will be able to request these changes between March 6th and April 1st, 2020.

In addition, Guests with dinner show, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, or Vacation Package reservations will be refunded in full.

The Disney Resort Line is scheduled to operate as normal. Operations related to the Disney Hotels will be slightly adjusted as necessary.

While we’re very disappointed to see this development, it’s for the best. The safety of Guests and Cast Members is the highest priority, and it’s critical that the COVID-19 situation remain under control, especially with the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics looming. With this closure, there are no Disney parks currently operating in Asia.

Be sure to keep your eyes on a trusted global news source and check with your doctor and the US State Department before travel to Japan and China. If you choose to come, wash your hands as often as possible, use hand sanitizer, and consider wearing a mask and/or touching your face as little as possible.
