Disney’s Newest Animated Movie On Track to Lose $100 Million

It has been a rough time lately for Disney animation. In the past, Disney’s animated features were almost always a guaranteed success, from hits like Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella to more modern tales like Frozen and Encanto. However, the animation studio has been struggling more and more; in the past year, most of its films have underperformed. These include films from Pixar as well, like Turning Red, Lightyear, and the live-action/animated film Pinocchio.

Unfortunately, Disney’s newest animated film, Strange World, is faring even worse than its recent predecessors. Strange World premiered in theaters on November 23, but tanked at the box office over Thanksgiving weekend.

Now, according to a new report from Variety, Strange World is projected to lose at least $100 million at the box office during a time when Disney films have typically performed well.

“Normally this time of year, a Disney family film is the big draw,” says Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst. “It shows we’re still recovering and adapting to the constraints of the pandemic.”

Unless its business rebounds dramatically in the next few weeks (and that seems unlikely given the film’s moderate reviews, lackluster audience reception and minimal buzz), sources estimate that “Strange World” will lose at least $100 million in its theatrical run. Even with proper attention on Disney+ and home entertainment platforms, box office experts suggest it’ll be difficult to get the big-budget film into the black. Since “Strange World” cost $180 million to produce and tens of millions more in global marketing and distribution fees, the film needs to gross roughly $360 million to break even, sources say.

Not only has Strange World not performed well monetarily, but it also received the lowest audience scores a Disney movie has ever received from CinemaScore. Even Disney flops like Chicken Little and The Good Dinosaur received low As. Strange World, on the other hand, only gained a B audience score.

However, it’s always encouraged that fans watch a film regardless of ratings so that they can make their own judgment. Here’s more on Strange World.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed adventure “Strange World” introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world.

Even though it seems unlikely that Disney will break even with its new movie, there is still some hope for Strange World. That hope lies in Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+. Movie theaters are still struggling since the pandemic, and many people will wait for a movie to be available to stream. At this time, no Disney+ premiere date has been announced for Strange World.

Disney films have been averaging about 45 days in the theater before they head to Disney+, so it is possible Strange World will be streaming early in the new year.

The numbers are in and Marvel Studio’s “Black Widow” is officially the largest domestic box office opening since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.

The newest superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Black Widow” garnered a grand $215 million globally in all release formats. This includes $80 million in domestic box office, $78M in international box office, and over $60M in Disney+ Premier Access.

  • Largest domestic opening weekend since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”
  • Only film to earn more than $100 million domestically for an opening weekend since the beginning of the pandemic
  • Third-highest Marvel Cinematic Universe origin story opening weekend (after “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel”)

“Once again, Marvel has delivered an exceptional film to the delight of fans worldwide with Black Widow achieving numerous milestones in the current marketplace,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media, and Entertainment Distribution. “Black Widow’s strong performance this weekend affirms our flexible distribution strategy of making franchise films available in theaters for a true cinematic experience and, as COVID concerns continue globally, providing choice to consumers who prefer to watch at home on Disney+.”

“Black Widow” is the first film in the 4th phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the recent launches of the Disney+ original MCU series “WandaVision”, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier”, and “Loki.”According to Disney, Marvel fans have streamed nearly 3 billion hours of content on Disney+ to date.

Disney and Marvel also recently celebrated the June 4th opening of Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. Until the end of July, you can meet Black Widow in her white “snow suit” at Avengers Campus.

“Black Widow” is currently in theaters. It stars Scarlett Johannson, reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina.

‘Cruella’ Debuts With $27 Million at The Box Office

Disney’s newest live-action film Cruella tells the story of how this evil villain came to be. Fans have rushed to the theatres to see this film as it hit high numbers at the Box Office over the weekend.

Cruella grossed $21.3 million, Disney said, and an estimated $26.4 million over the four-day weekend, placing it in the number two spot behind A Quiet Place Part 2, which earned an impressive $58.8 million.

The team knew they would be coming in second to A Quiet Place Part 2:

This is a great result for Cruella. It’s not just about opening weekend for family films, and we always knew we’d be No. 2. We’re in great, great shape for a long run.“Tony Chambers, Disney theatrical distribution chief

The numbers are strong as you have to consider the film also released on Disney+ Premier Access for an additional charge of $29.99 cutting into the box office numbers.

“Onward” Still Leads At Box Office; Theaters Attendance Is Down

The box office is seeing a substantial decline in ticket sales due to the global concerns of COVID-19. Less people leaving their homes, combined with theater chains limiting their individual theater capacity, resulted in ticket sales reaching their lowest levels in 20 years. This weekend in North America alone, ticket sales accounted for just $55 million at the box office.

Increasing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus epidemic has resulted in most overseas theaters closing their doors. Over in North America, the majority of theaters have remained opened for business. The two largest cinema chains, AMC Theaters and Regal Cinemas, have been filling their seats to 50% capacity in order to provide adequate spacing for moviegoers. Both chains have pledged to clean their theaters in between showings.

“Onward” finished in first place at the box office this weekend, but dropped a massive 73% since last weekend’s opening of $40 million. “Onward” brought in $10.5 million, which increased its domestic total to $61 million. Overseas, the film brought in $6.8 million, which increased its overseas box office total to $41 million. “Onward’s” worldwide box office total is currently sitting at $102 million.

“The Call Of The Wild” finished in eighth place and brought in $2 million for Disney. So far, “The Call Of The Wild” has made $62 million domestically and $45 million internationally, bringing its worldwide box office total to $107 million.

Several highly anticipated movies, “A Quiet Place Part 2”, “Mulan” and “No Time To Die”, were supposed to open in the coming weeks, but had their release dates put on hold. “Black Widow” is still scheduled to open on May 1st, but that can change in the coming days or weeks.

“Onward” Wins At The Box Office But Has A Subpar Opening

“Onward” came in first place at the box office bringing in $40 million. Overseas, the film brought in an additional $28 million, bringing its worldwide box office total to $68 million.

Although “Onward” finished #1 at the box office, the movie also opened with one of the lowest openings ever for a Pixar animated film. The only other Pixar films to have lower opening weekends were “The Good Dinosaur” with $39 million and “A Bug’s Life” with $33 million. However, adjusted for inflation, “Onward” had the less impressive opening of the three movies.

“The Call Of The Wild” finished in fifth place with $7 million. So far, “The Call Of The Wild” has made $56 million domestically and $43 million internationally, bringing its worldwide box office take to $99 million. Things are not looking good for “The Call Of The Wild” at the box office and Disney is expected to lose around $50 million in the end.
