Retired ride vehicles, posters, even a bi-plane from Magic Kingdom attraction up for auction

Joel Magee is known as “America’s Toy Scout,” and for good reason. He loves toys and Disney memorabilia and has spent a large part of his life appraising toys and collectibles, but he also has a massive Disney theme parks collection of his own.

But we’re not talking trinkets and knick-knacks.

Instead, the West Palm Beach native collects Disney theme park relics, such as attractions posters, signage, figures, ride models, costumes, and other items from Disney theme parks over the years.

Magee has collected pennants, hats, lunchboxes, games and tabletop figures from Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Magee’s personal Disney collection has been growing for 30 years. His first purchase was in Orlando at a collectors’ event.

“There was a gentleman there that had a whole bunch of cool Disney items. They were from the park, and I didn’t even know that you could get items from the parks,” Magee said. “I bought some of the pieces, and I caught the bug.”Among his first purchases was a poster for the Haunted Mansion attraction. And Magee paid a hefty price for it.“I remember giving him at the time $1,000 for it. I’m like, ‘I just paid $1,000 for a poster!” Magee said. “And now that same poster goes for $10,000. I mean, it’s just crazy.”Magee and his massive collection have been featured on History Channel’s Pawn Stars and on MeTV’s Collector’s Call, and over the years, he has amassed some pretty amazing pieces in the collection. For example, Magee owns the biplane from the “If You Had Wings” attraction that Guests enjoyed at Magic Kingdom from June 1972 to June 1987.

His collection also includes a ride vehicle from “Dumbo the Flying Elephant” at Magic Kingdom, a control panel from a monorail, and an original 1971 Hitchhiking Ghosts trio from the Haunted Mansion attraction.

The original three hitchhiking ghosts from Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion are part of Joel Magee's collection. He turned down an offer of $750,000 for them three years ago, he said.

But now, Magee says, it’s time to downsize. So he reached out to the co-owner of Van Eaton Galleries in California, Mike Van Eaton, who in turn flew to West Palm Beach to see Magee’s collection for himself–most of which is in Magee’s 9,000 square-foot home. (Well, stuffed into the home, anyway.)The plan is for Van Eaton to hold an auction just for Magee’s collection, but Van Eaton says before the Galleries hold an auction, they will host pop-up exhibitions across the country. He says the collection is special because there’s a story to it.

Magee has kept ride models, costumes, attractions posters, figures, signs and various other theme park memorabilia in his West Palm Beach home.

“The thing that makes this collection great is that it actually tells a story. It tells the history of Disneyland through artifacts, from the clothing that the Cast Members wore to the signage to the props to the attraction posters,” Van Eaton said. “It was not random. It’s thought out, and he focused on certain things.”

Van Eaton’s company has had the experience of hosting a collection belonging to a single individual once before. The auction was held in a space that once housed a Sports Authority store. When the exhibition opened up to the public, the crowd they hoped for ended up being much smaller than the crowd that showed up.

“We were hoping to get a few thousand people, and we ended up getting about 50,000 people, and people were waiting three hours to see this exhibit,” Van Eaton said. “This is in a town where Disneyland is right around the corner.”

Van Eaton thinks Magee’s Dumbo ride vehicle will fetch a lot of cash.

“I can tell you that Dumbo ride vehicle–which the only other one I have seen offered for sale was in 2018–that one went for half a million dollars,” he said.

The auction will host very expensive items, such as the trio of Hitchhiking Ghosts, for which Magee says he was once offered $750,000.

“That was three years ago,” Magee explained. “We turned it down.”

But according to Van Eaton, there are many affordable pieces in the collection as well–some that will run for between $20 and $50 each.

1,000 Disney Pieces To Be Auctioned as Disney Collector Sells Home

There are Disney collectors… and then there’s the Rummell Family! They took their love for collecting all things Disney to a whole new level by transforming their home of 23 years into their personal “happiest place on Earth.” With the recent sale of their home fetching $2.24 million, they are putting many of their Disney items up for sale in an auction. That’s right, you’ll have a chance to snag pieces like a Rocket Jets rocket, an Autopia car, and a buggy from Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

As shared by OC Register: “Disney collector Scott Rummell just sold the four-bedroom Yorba Linda home that he and his wife, Terry, spent 23 years transforming into their very own “happiest place on Earth.” Assorted ride vehicles, hand-silkscreened attraction posters, and other objects from the 25,000-piece Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom collection infuse almost every corner of the 4,569-square-foot house with playfulness. But none of it comes with the deal — the house fetched $2.24 million with multiple offers six days after listing on April 23.”

Rummell now plans to sell 1,000 pieces this December at a two-day exhibition and sale put on by Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks. He’s hoping to bring in a minimum of $2 million dollars for the Disney items.

So what are a few of the items that will be going up for auction? Some items include four vintage ride vehicles, Rocket Jets rocket, Autopia racer car, and a Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride buggy. Want a Skyway gondola? One will be up for auction and is expected to bring in around $600,000.

“Even though it seems like we’re leaving Disney behind, we’re not,” Rummell says. “We designed our Dana Point house to look like the Disney Beach Club Resort in Orlando. We actually bought art that they had in the lobby and rooms so it has that Disney nautical feel. And so, we’re not leaving Disney completely behind.”

We’ll be keeping an eye on auction details for December as we’re excited to see what pieces will be available to bid on. Would you transform your home into a Disney paradise? It looks like the Disney investment paid off big for this family!

Walt Disney’s Carolwood Pacific Railroad Plans Part of Upcoming Massive Disney Auction

Bidders have a chance to purchase a rare piece of Walt Disney history. An archive of Carolwood Pacific Railroad items is on the auction block. The Carolwood Pacific Railroad was Walt’s personal backyard railroad. It served as the inspiration for the Disneyland Railroad and locomotives at all future Disney theme parks.

Heritage Auctions is offering the lot as part of its The Art of the Disney Theme Park / Disney Storybook Art Collection Signature Auction. The auction runs April 8 – 10. We’ll be showcasing a number of Disney Parks items from the auction in great detail here on the site over the next few weeks.

According to the Heritage Auctions press release, the archive is “comprised of the actual plans for Walt Disney’s Carolwood Pacific Railroad and an original set of cyanotype blueprints for the Lilly Belle steam locomotive.” The Lilly Belle, a 1/8 scale coal-fueled steam engine, provided the power to the Carolwood Pacific.

The Carolwood Pacific Railroad first operated in the backyard of Walt Disney’s Holmby Hills, California home. The Carolwood Pacific ran on a half-mile of 7-1/4″ gauge track. It began operating in 1950, five years before Disneyland opened.

Numerous artifacts are included in the lot.

  • Master Backyard Layout, including extensive hand-written notes and “Use this for layout. 6/1/51 Walt”
  • Additional blueprints, including locomotive, rolling stock, bridge, and track layout drawings
  • Printed plans for Walt Disney’s residence itself and a timber trestle
  • A topographical map of Carolwood Drive

In total, the lot is comprised of approximately 60 pieces. No price estimation has been published. The auction includes numerous Disney artifacts, but none tied so closely to Walt Disney himself.
