New Baby Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The Kilimanjaro Safaris family got a little bigger today at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as a baby Hartmann’s mountain zebra was born on the savanna, and we have a look at the bouncing (and standing) baby boy!

Guests riding Kilimanjaro Safaris today got to see the miracle of birth and the magic of nature in stunning reality. Some lucky guests got to see the birth of a Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal that was born on the savanna this morning. Estimated to weigh about 65 pounds, the healthy baby boy has long legs and was standing and nuzzling with mom within minutes of birth.

Mom Heidi is a parenting pro – staying close to her baby to bond and nurse. Bonding is especially important, as a young zebra will imprint on its mother’s scent and memorize the unique markings on its mother’s hind legs to tell her apart from others in the herd. In the coming weeks, the pair will rejoin sister Asha and the rest of the herd on the savanna.

The foal was born as part of the Species Survival Plan program, which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and ensures responsible breeding and genetic diversity of hundreds of animal species.

Today’s joyful arrival marks the first zebra birth at Walt Disney World this year. The resort is home to three distinct types of zebra: Hartmann’s mountain zebra, Grevy’s zebra and plains zebra. Though zebra may all be defined by their stripes, there are distinct stripe patterns that define each type. Hartmann’s mountain and Grevy’s zebras have stripes that stop right at the edge of their bellies, while stripes on common zebras wrap around the whole body. You can tell a Grevy’s zebra from a Hartmann’s mountain zebra by looking at their ears. They are larger on the Grevy’s zebra.  Hartmann’s mountain zebras are found in sub-Saharan Africa and are a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and hunting.

Kali River Rapids Changes Operating Schedule, Opens 1 Hour After Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Via wdwnt.com

The Walt Disney World website was updated with changes to the operating schedule for Kali River Rapids at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Kali River Rapids, which recently underwent a three-month refurbishment, will now open at 9am each day, an hour after Disney’s Animal Kingdom opens.

The delayed opening is currently set to continue through mid-July. Disney has not announced operating hours beyond that point yet.

No reason has been given for the daily delayed opening, it is likely due to guest demand in the early morning being low.

Disney to Live-Stream ‘A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King’

Last week we reported that the show, ‘A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King’ had quietly opened with an opportunity for guests to enjoy a soft opening this week. On Saturday, May 15, the modified show is officially back and Disney is offering a chance for everyone to see it.

There’s something special about entertainment. The combination of dance, music, costumes and the unmistakable talent of the Disney Live Entertainment team is pure magic. That’s why I’m thrilled to share that “A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King” is opening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on May 15! I was able to sit in on a dress rehearsal recently and was so impressed. I found myself tapping my foot, clapping along and grinning from ear to ear (from behind my mask, of course!).

It was also wonderful to see how excited and joy-filled the performers were to do what they love most by sharing their talents and artistry. They are just itching to share their passion with a live audience and are thrilled to be bringing the show to Disney’s Animal Kingdom guests.

One thing to keep in mind is, there have been a few changes to the show since you last saw it. While the majesty and splendor is all there, staging and choreography have been updated with safety protocols in mind for our performers and our guests. We’ve also pared down parts of the show, such as the acrobatics, but the rest of the cast will be sure to dazzle you.

Because we are still physical distancing as part of our health and safety measures, the opportunity to view “A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King” during a visit to the park will be very limited. To give more people a chance to enjoy it, a one-time live stream will be available on May 15 at 12:25 p.m. ET  on the Disney Parks Blog as well as on @DisneyParks on TikTok, the Disney Parks YouTube Channel, and the Disney Parks Blog Facebook Page. We invite you to tune in to our first official show and join in the fun!

Looking to the future, we hope to have even more good news about entertainment to share in the coming months. Hakuna Matata!
