Abigail Disney ARRESTED!

Disney heiress Abigail Disney has made a career out of trashing her family name. From documentaries about labor conditions to “tell-all” books about to salacious podcast interviews where she calls her great-uncle Walt a fascist she delights in making a mockery of her family name. To hear her tell it, it is all in the name of “activism.” That activism landed her in hot water today.

The heiress to the multi-billion company was arrested today for protesting…the rich. She and 12 other climate change activists were arrested after they illegally shut down an airport in the Hamptons. The protest was aimed at stopping private jets due to their carbon emissions. The small East Hampton Airport primarily services private jets and charter flights. Commercial flights do not go in or out of the airport. The airport is located in a  glamorous neighborhood known to be vacation homes of various celebrities and wealthy business executives.

What does climate change have to do with the rich? According to Disney everything. Disney said, “As a person who has been privileged enough to use private jets, I know it’s hard to give up a luxury that is special, but I also know that the time has passed for spewing greenhouse gasses like this merely for our personal comfort.”

Teddy Ogborn, a  spokesperson for Planet Over Profit explained  that, “These same rich people farting into the Hamptons on private jets are often the ones who make their money in industries that hugely accelerate the climate crisis.”

I guess they forgot that third world countries where there is no  “ultra-rich” class are the main proponents of climate-changing emissions. According to Brookings.edu, developing countries “are likely to emit more than half the annual global total of greenhouse gas by 2030.” It’s  a lot less comfortable to protest there than the Hamptons though, I suppose.

For her part, Abigail Disney was proud of her arrest and bragged about it on Twitter this evening after posting bail (something only the privileged can afford to do but she probably doesn’t want to discuss that either). She proudly proclaimed she had “popped her mug-shot cherry.”

It’s interesting that she, a Disney heiress, would be protesting the rich when in 2019 she said this, “To most normal people, what I spend on a really good dinner at a really good restaurant, that would be horrifying.”

The protest at the airport today was just the first of many that the groups Abigail Disney associates with have planned. Tomorrow they plan to protest a golf course in the Hamptons and on Monday they intend to bring pitchforks and gather outside of a CitiBank executive’s home. They stated they are planning their protests strategically to “disrupt public areas in an effort to push leaders to take more aggressive actions to curb global warming.”

Disney Heiress Speaks Out Against Walt Disney Company CEOs

In a new interview, Dr. Abigail Disney addressed criticisms of her loyalty to her family and the Disney legacy after speaking out about the economic crisis currently faced by Disney Parks Cast Members and CEO salaries.

At both the Disneyland Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort, Cast Members make the magic possible through their hard efforts each day but often face under-compensation for their exceptional Guest service. Since last August, unions within the STCU have held protests in Florida to petition Disney for a living wage, and renegotiate their contracts.

Moreover, production employees at the Walt Disney Studio are currently lobbying the Walt Disney Company for the right to unionize alongside the rest of the animation department, and costume department Cast Members spoke out about a gendered pay gap within entertainment. Of course, heir to the Disney name, Abigail, has been a vocal supporter of Cast Member wage rights for years, and is not above criticizing both the company, or its founder Walt.

However, with the release of a new documentary film, “The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales,” Disney has attempted to shed light on the situation, particularly the rate of change from how her grandfather Roy O. Disney, and great-uncle Walt Disney, treated their workers to how the multi-billion dollar conglomerate does today. In fact, on an episode of Florida’s Fourth Estate, Disney told hosts hosts Ginger Gadsden and Matt Austin that while she herself has an immense love for Disney, for her family, and for the Disney Parks, she feels the need to criticize the current situation because she has the privilege to change it.

Disney recalls a “great deal of affection” between Roy and his employees on visits to Disneyland as a child, and says she cannot imagine him being able to sleep at night knowing many of them struggled to put food on the table even working full-time, while Disney CEO Bob Iger and Bob Chapek rake in over $65 million yearly. For instance, a 2018 study found one in ten CMs have experienced homelessness, some even living in their cars in Disney parking lots, while almost 70% had experienced food insecurity, and 75% did not make enough to cover basic expenses, in what union leaders are calling an “economic crisis.”

Although many have dubbed Disney a “traitor” for her outspoken views, she maintains that the “insane” compensation Disney CEOs receive is not her issue, but rather that they continue to take it before making sure the employees responsible for their having it at all are properly compensated and taken care of in the same vein that her ancestors did. Furthermore, Abigail said that while the situation continues, she feels “a loyalty higher than Disney and that’s to my fellow human beings.”

According to Abigail, the Walt Disney Company can remain a profitable visionary while also supporting Cast Members’ wellbeing, and that management only tries to hire workers at the lowest price possible due to beliefs systems in the US which convince us these two ideals are mutually exclusive when they’re not.

Disney’s documentary will examine these myths, even at the expense of others criticizing her true loyalties:

I would say I probably love Disney more than any other super fan could possibly love Disney. It’s in my DNA, it’s down to my toes, and I remember every detail and every nuance of both of those parks. I will tell you, though, if you really, really, really love something, then you have to see it truthfully and you have to speak the truth about it and it’s not perfect. I wish it were.

Abigail Disney’s Production Company Is Shutting Down

Years ago, Abigail Disney — granddaughter of Roy O. Disney and great-niece of Walt — walked away from the company that had shot her family to fame and fortune. Ms. Disney got rid of most of her stock in the company, saying that she did not feel like the money was hers, as she did nothing to earn it. In the years since, Ms. Disney has kept a few shares of the company, but has been on less-than-friendly terms with the people running it and has frequently criticized The Walt Disney Company for its low Cast Member (employee) wages and sky-high executive salaries.

When it comes to salaries, Ms. Disney has taken aim at both current CEO Bob Chapek, as well as past CEO Bob Iger. Ms. Disney has indicated that, while she used to have a decent relationship with Iger, her relationship with both men is now non-existent.

Ms. Disney has always called upon the Walt Disney Company to increase the pay of its Cast Members. Especially after surveys revealed that a number of Cast Members had experienced homelessness and food insecurity while working for the House of Mouse. Ms. Disney has even gone so far as to make a documentary film — called The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales — detailing the company’s low employee pay and high executive salaries — including a $20 million per year bonus that Bob Chapek receives.

The documentary — which will soon be widely released — was produced by Ms. Disney’s production company, Fork Films. Unfortunately, we are now learning that Fork Films will be closing its doors. The decision was made a while ago, but is now being made public. News of the closure was first shared by Variety:

As part of the closure, fewer than 10 positions have been eliminated. Abigail, a filmmaker and philanthropist, is also the granddaughter of Roy Disney, the co-founder of The Walt Disney Company.

A spokesperson for Fork Films said the staff was notified of the closure in February, and have been working to wind down the company by Sept. 30, 2022. Disney’s most recent film, “The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales,” which she co-directed with Kathleen Hughes, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and was recently released digitally. The film examines the issue of economic inequality and ballooning CEO compensation packages. The movie made headlines as Disney drilled down on the employment and union practices at the theme parks run by The Walt Disney Company. In the film and dozens of subsequent interviews, Disney has consistently and unflinchingly taken the company to task, describing the corporation’s promises of “upward mobility” as “neoliberal claptrap.”

After much reflection, Abigail decided to close Fork Films,” the spokesperson said, adding, “several Fork Films’ staff members will continue working on ‘The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales,’ its release and impact campaign in the coming months. She plans to continue making films.”

Although the production company is closing down, Ms. Disney said that she will keep making films and will keep calling out the company and corporate behavior that she feels is unjust.
