Bob Iger Backtracks on Out of Touch Statements

Bob Iger has gotten a lot of flack for his stance on the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strikes. He called them “disturbing” and said that the union demands were “unreasonable.” Fran Drescher, president of the SAG, compared him to a medieval land baron. Memes and statements denouncing Iger took over social media. People felt he was out of touch. It wasn’t a good look for him.

At today’s Earnings Call, he backtracked on those statements. He said the studio’s relationship with the writers and actors is vital. Nothing is more important to the company than its relationship with the talented writers and actors in the industry.” He also vowed that he was “personally committed to doing whatever he can” to aid in coming to a resolution with both the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America.

Bob Iger

This attempt to smooth ruffled feathers comes on the heels of an earnings statement that is lackluster at best. Never before has there been such a loss in so many sectors of the company. It’s a dark time for the Walt Disney Company, but Iger remains confident that it will turn around.

One wonders about whether the comments from Iger are genuine, considering Disney is actively seeking to employ the very technology the strikes are fighting against. The WGA and SAG are currently striking, in part, to protect themselves and their jobs from Artificial Intelligence (AI)  replacement.  News broke recently that Disney is actively hiring AI programmers and platforms to perform writing and acting work.

Disney Finally Confirms What’s Hurting the Bottom Line

There’s been a lot of talk in recent weeks about the crowds at Walt Disney World. Depending on who you’re listening to, you’ve either heard that the crowds have disappeared or are crazier than ever free. You’ve also even heard that it’s not affecting Disney or that it has drastically hurt their bottom line. All of that has been pure conjecture. No one has had a definitive answer… until today.

Disney has released its third-quarter earnings statement. While they naturally attempt to gloss over the things That make them look bad, if you know where to look. You know where to find the information income at the parks and resorts is up. This is a very good thing. However, a closer look at the earnings report shows that all is not well in Florida.

The report states, “Lower operating income at our domestic parks and resorts was attributable to a decrease at Walt Disney World Resort.” That means those thinning crowds? They matter. It is also significant that for the second place in a row, international parks have outlined domestic parks. We wouldn’t go so far as to say that Disney World is in trouble, But it does seem to be on a downward spiral.

Disney’s admission that crowds have thinned is significant as well. It flies in the face of comments that they have made previously. Bob Iger has gone on record in the past saying that the crowds aren’t smaller and that he’s not concerned about Disney World. The earnings report tells a very different story. Iger is an excellent showman, but the numbers are always going to tell the truth.

Disney and Swarovski Team up to Create a Replica of Cinderella’s Glass Slipper

In a magical collaboration between Disney and luxury brand Swarovski, a replica of Cinderella’s glass slipper has been created. This enchanting creation brings to life the iconic symbol of Cinderella’s transformation from rags to riches, capturing the essence of Disney’s beloved fairy tale.

The collaboration between Disney and Swarovski is not new, as they have come together in the past to create stunning pieces of jewelry and figurines. However, this latest collaboration takes their partnership to new heights as they recreate one of the most famous shoes in history.

The Cinderella Glass Slipper has been recreated many times before, but never to this level of perfection. Inspired by the 2015 Cinderella live-action film, this replica of Cinderella’s glass slipper is made entirely of Swarovski crystal, giving it an unparalleled shimmer and magical sparkle. Swarovski crystal is famous for its clarity and brilliance, and in this case, it perfectly captures the essence of the fairy tale. The crystal used solid Aurora Borealis crystal for this replica adds an ethereal touch, giving the shoe a magical shimmer reminiscent of Cinderella’s enchanted life.

To create such a shoe, eight Swarovski craftspeople in the Austrian Alps spent 150 hours on it. The show features 221 facets, and it’s absolutely flawless. Swarovski’s global creative director, Giovanna Engelbert, says;

“What inspired me to recreate Cinderella’s iconic crystal slipper for Disney100 is the name of the charity and the idea of a wish.. And of course, the slipper is the most famous shoe in the world. It is transformative and full of magic, so it was the perfect way to unite the world of Swarovski with the world of Disney.”

This shoe is no ordinary shoe and it was made for no ordinary purpose. Disney and Swarovski teamed up to make this shoe as a contribution to Make-A-Wish. Right now, Disney is also celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company, so this project is also in honor of that milestone.

While this is not something you can buy at a Disney gift shop, it truly is a marvel to look at and admire.

Disney Scheduling Error Doomed ‘Haunted Mansion’ Film

The overall hype and the star-studded cast of Disney’s recent Haunted Mansion film didn’t translate at the box office this past weekend. It turns out that Disney Enterprises were the foolish mortals in putting the classic theme park attraction film up against the fearsome Barbenheimer. However, the real scheduling issue occurred long before competition films Barbie and Oppenheimer gained any traction.

The question is: Why schedule a spooky, haunted movie for a mid-summer release over a Halloween debut?

The Walt Disney Company is usually top-notch in its theming, which leads audiences to question why Haunted Mansion may not have made more sense to release in the fall during the designated spooky season. Variety asked the same question and cited two main reasons.

Summertime can be a great time to draw families into movie theaters. Kids are out of school, and parents need a solid way to collect their families and beat the heat. While Haunted Mansion had the makings of a promising family film, director Justin Simien and cast members like Rosario Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Owen Wilson had no idea they would have to compete with the behemoth that is Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

After the film came in a distant third place on its opening weekend, Disney may have realized their error. Kids and families are available, but they’d rather spend their summer days with Barbie at the beach than a ghost-ridden mansion. Variety notes that the actor’s strike also “hobbled” Haunted Mansion’s ability to market.

Maybe The Walt Disney Co. knew ahead of time that the Haunted Mansion film would be met tepidly in theaters, so they picked a summer release date that allows the film to hit its streaming platform right around the Halloween season. Variety sites Disney’s 1993 Hocus Pocus as a theatrical flop that became a cult classic only in its afterlife. Is this what Disney hopes for the new Haunted Mansion film, too?

It’s hard to imagine Disney Plus will have a surge of sign-ups around Halloween just to access 2023’s Haunted Mansion, but scarier things have happened.
