Could Disney’s “Minnie” Vans Be Making a Return?

Over the last few days, Disney’s “Minnie” vans have been spotted here and there around the Walt Disney World Resort, but only a few times, which has us wondering: is Disney’s Minnie Mouse-themed rideshare service gearing up for a triumphant return?

The service first became available to Guests at Disney World in 2017 at select Disney World Resort Hotel locations. Its availability grew to encompass the entire Walt Disney World Resort property and also offered transportation to and from Orlando International Airport (MCO).

For between $20 and $50, Guests could reserve a Minnie van via the Lyft app, powered by a partnership between Disney and Lyft exclusively for this service. Some Guests found it incredibly convenient, and many families with children enjoyed the perk of each van coming with two child seats. Others balked at the cost, opting for traditional Walt Disney World transportation instead.

The future of the Disney World Minnie Van service has been questionable at best ever since nearly 30,000 Cast Members were laid off in response to the growing coronavirus pandemic crisis.

Cast Members were initially furloughed in April 2020, after Walt Disney World closed to Guests in March. During that time, Disney continued to pay premiums for Cast Members’ health insurance benefits, but as time went on, Disney World execs were faced with the very difficult prospect of laying off Cast Members, and at the time, no one knew when the parks would reopen.

The decision was indeed a difficult one for everyone involved, especially for Josh D’Amaro, then-President of the Walt Disney World Resort, whose heart for the Cast Members affected could be heard in his announcement to them:

“In light of the prolonged impact of COVID-19 on our business, including limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic–exacerbated in California by the State’s unwillingness to lift restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen–we have made the very difficult decision to begin the process of reducing our workforce at our Parks, Experiences and Products segment at all levels, having kept non-working Cast Members on furlough since April, while paying healthcare benefits.

Approximately 28,000 domestic employees will be affected, of which about 67% are part-time. We are talking with impacted employees as well as to the unions on next steps for union-represented Cast Members.”

Cast Members and Disney fans of all ages were elated to receive the news that the Walt Disney World Resort would begin a phased reopening. But when that reopening began on July 11, 2020, the Minnie vans were nowhere to be seen, and as time went on, Guests wondered if the paid rideshare service would return or if it would be shelved forever.

This week’s isolated sightings of the cheery red vans with white polka dots has our interested piqued at the least, and has us hopeful for their return at best, but at this time, Disney remains tight-lipped about the program, so for now, we’re left to wonder whether Cast Members are simply using the vehicles for convenience while working and performing duties around the Disney World property areas, or if things are moving toward a re-igniting of the service.

Disney Announces Theme of New 2022 Springtime Surprise Race Weekend

Just ahead of the first in-person race at Walt Disney World since February 2020, Disney has announced the theme for the all-new spring race, runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend.

From a Disney Cast Member;

We’re about four months from the debut of our new runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend and I’m excited to share details about the “surprise’’ part of this unique event, whose theme will change each year.

This inaugural event borrows from some all-time favorite runDisney events and combines them with exciting new twists and turns for a totally unique experience.

When March 31-April 3, 2022 rolls around, runners will embark on a nostalgic four-day race weekend that will have them reliving wonderful past runDisney memories while creating new ones during the Walt Disney World Resort 50th anniversary celebration.

The inaugural Springtime Surprise Weekend will feature:

    • Expedition Everest 5K (March 31, 2022) – The race will once again feature a nighttime 5K combined with a scavenger hunt, but this time the hunt will be conducted during the 5K.
    • Race for the Taste 10K (April 2, 2022) – The event will mirror the 10K from the past, but now the race will celebrate the newest attraction at Walt Disney World Resort, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT.
    • The Tower of Terror 10-Miler (April 3, 2022) – The race will still be a 10-miler, but will be run in the morning instead of at night.

Runners who sign up for the Springtime Surprise Challenge, can test their endurance by participating in all three events – 19.3 total miles – and earn a special “challenge’’ medal while perhaps also reminiscing throughout the weekend.

And if you’re in the mood for more relaxation, there will also be a sunrise yoga event in front of Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park to kick off the weekend, similar to the recently announced yoga event that leads off the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend in Feb. 2022.

Registration for the Springtime Surprise Weekend begins Dec. 9th at rundisney.com. The runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend is the last in the 2021-2022 race season following the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend (Nov. 4-7), the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend (Jan. 5-9, 2022), and the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend (Feb. 24-27, 2022). To sign up for a race or to get more information about runDisney events, visit rundisney.com.

Major updates to today’s severe weather forecast at Disney, to include possible tornadoes

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for several counties in Central Florida, and as of 1:00 p.m. ET, the watch was expanded to include the counties of Orange and Seminole. The watch expires at 5:00 p.m. ET this evening.

The Walt Disney World Resort is located in southwestern Orange County, so the watch now includes all –of Disney World’s property, including the parks and the Resort Hotels.

Yesterday, we reported that severe and potentially dangerous weather had been forecast for Central Florida for today, including rain, thunderstorms–some of them possibly severe–and increased winds of up to 20 miles per hour. As of yesterday, there was no mention of the possibility of tornadoes, but now the condition is such that the possibility exists.

Remember that a “tornado watch” means conditions are conducive to the forming of a tornado, and a “tornado warning” means that a tornado has been spotted by storm trackers or by local radar. Often, when there is the threat of severe thunderstorms, a tornado watch will also be issued, as the conditions under which both take place have many similarities.

The latest forecast shows a possibility of up to 1/2 inch of rain in the Orlando area and as much as 2 inches of rain possible in cities to the north like Jacksonville.

If you’re visiting the parks at Walt Disney World today, be sure to take an umbrella, poncho and even a dry pair of socks and/or shoes to change into after the storms pass, should you get yours wet while navigating the parks. It can also be helpful to have a plan for what you might enjoy doing in the parks, should outdoor attractions be temporarily closed or unavailable because of the storms.
