On May 1, Guests visiting Walt Disney World Resort were shocked and elated when they saw Disney’s new MagicBand+ on sale. Disney had announced the new bands would be coming to the Parks in 2022. There was no official announcement of the release from Disney, so these Guests thought it was just a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, they soon learned that it was all a big mistake.
Not long after the MagicBand’s release, theme park insider Scott Gustin shared on Twitter that the new MagicBand’s were released by accident. Disney Cast Members had pulled the Bands from shelves and were refunding Guests who had already purchased them.
Disney says a limited number of MagicBand+ bands were sold earlier today. They removed the bands from the store and are offering refunds. MB+ features/in-park experiences are not live and are planned to launch later this year. Details (and a launch date) will be revealed later.
Guests have been waiting for months for Disney to finally release its MagicBand+. Sadly, they will have to wait a little longer. The new MagicBands are supposed to interact with the Fab 50 statues that have been placed at the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom for Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration. However, the 50th Anniversary has less than a year left, so if the statues are taken down when it ends, Guests will have a very limited time to actually use that feature.
According to Disney, MagicBand+ is also supposed to light up as you watch both Disney Enchantment at Magic Kingdom and Harmonious at EPCOT. Those are also only around for the 50th Anniversary. Disney has said that its MagicBand+ would be released early in 2022, but we are almost halfway through the year, and there is still no release date.
Even though Guests are still unable to purchase MagicBand+, traditional MagicBands — with dozens of incredible colors and designs — are still available for sale at all four theme parks, as well as Disney Springs.
DisneyDining.com will keep readers updated if and when Disney finally gives its MagicBand+ a release date. Hopefully that will be soon, since stores at Walt Disney World Resort are already getting shipments of them.
To celebrate May the Fourth, Disney PhotoPass Service is launching four new photo opportunities inStar Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Check them out below. We know not everyone can blast off to Batuu for May the Fourth, so these experiences will continue to be available after the celebration ends.
Ready to begin the next bounty hunt? Select Disney PhotoPass Image Scanners (known on our planet as photographers) in Batuu might offer clients a holopuck that can reveal the details of your next bounty. View this Magic Shot in a Disney account to see all of the intel.
For younglings still perfecting their skills, this is the droid they’re looking for! This training droid Magic Shot will have clients deflecting blaster bolts like a Jedi Master. Clients might not see the droid while taking this photo, but as Obi-Wan Kenobi once said, “Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them.”
Select Image Scanners in Batuu can offer clients a lightsaber to use in the photo – including a replica of Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber that’s available after sunset starting May the Fourth across from Oga’s Cantina.
On the outer reaches of Batuu near Droid Depot, clients might see Boba Fett’s ship overhead. It’s true… from a certain point of view.
In addition to these new opportunities, don’t miss out on capturing all of Disney PhotoPass Service’s Star Wars-themed photos at Disney’s Hollywood Studios:
Encounter familiar friends or enjoy special enhancements around Batuu with more Magic Shots

The Disney PhotoPass team is gearing up for Halfway to Halloween with the launch of two creepy cool things at Walt Disney World Resort.
First stop: The 5th Dimension. Get your subdued smiles and gloomy glares ready. There’s a storm brewing near the Hollywood Tower Hotel!
The newest Disney PhotoPass Lens launches today, and it’ll make clients feel like they’ve stepped back in time to Halloween night, 1939. Tip: When using this Lens, go far enough down Sunset Boulevard to hear the shrieks of those onboard the attraction. It really adds to the mood.
This Lens is available to use only on Sunset Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios through the My Disney Experience app with the purchase of Disney Genie+ service.*
Starting today, all foolish mortals materializing onboard The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park will notice that their photo will have a new look. As they’re known to do, the grim grinning ghosts are coming out to socialize – in the dead space of Guests’ photos! And if clients ride this attraction multiple times, they’ll notice that each time they ride, a different ghost might follow them home.
Remember, there’s no photo preview wall at the exit of this attraction where Guests can link their photo, so there are two options to have it automatically linked to a Disney account while riding:
Use a mobile device. Enable Bluetooth® for the My Disney Experience app before riding, ensure you’ve logged into the app sometime earlier that day, and keep the device out of low power mode. Then just put the device in a pocket or bag while enjoying the ride.**
Wear a MagicBand that’s linked to a Disney account.
This update at the Haunted Mansion is the first in our ongoing efforts to enhance onboard photos at some of your favorite Walt Disney World Resort attractions.
Next time clients head off to Magic Kingdom Park or Disney’s Hollywood Studios, they can enjoy these cadaverous capture opportunities!
*With the purchase of Disney Genie+ service, Walt Disney World guests can access many Disney PhotoPass Lenses in the My Disney Experience app as soon as they enter the park. Select Disney PhotoPass Lenses are accessible only within designated areas of Walt Disney World Resort. Other Disney PhotoPass Lenses will remain accessible in the My Disney Experience app until 5:59 a.m. on the 45th day after the day on which the Disney Genie+ service was used; certain states and localities are excluded. Many Disney PhotoPass Lenses use technology that detects the coordinates of key points on a guest’s face and/or hands and may be used only by guests 18 years of age and older who have consented to use of this technology. Therefore, guests unable to provide such consent, as well as guests under 18 years of age, will have fewer lenses available to use. To access Disney PhotoPass Lenses, an eligible mobile device with the My Disney Experience app with access to the device’s camera and location is required. A purchase of Disney Genie+ service at Walt Disney World Resort does not include downloads of a guest’s Disney PhotoPass photos or videos that were captured by photographers and onboard attractions. Use of Disney PhotoPass Lenses is subject to the Terms and Conditions. Subject to restrictions and change without notice.
**Message, data and roaming rates may apply. Availability subject to handset limitations and features may vary by handset, service provider or otherwise. Coverage and app stores not available everywhere. If you’re under 18, get your parents’ permission first.
