Hocus Pocus 2 In Development for Disney+

Pull up a cauldron and grab your broomstick (or vacuum cleaner)! A sequel to Hocus Pocus is reportedly in development for Disney+, according to Collider‘s Jeff Sneider.

Jen D’Angelo (WorkaholicsLA to VegasHappy Together) has been hired to pen the script for the film. Sneider also reported that D’Angelo has been given another task as well (and we’re not talking about sucking out the souls of all the children in Salem): getting the actresses behind the infamous Sanderson sisters, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, to reprise their roles in the sequel. None of them are currently signed to the project, but

isney is reportedly optimistic that they will return in some fashion. The project is still in the early stages, and it’s not yet known if Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson would be the main characters, or if they would “pass the torch” to a new class of witches.

While not initially a box office success on its release in 1993, Hocus Pocus has become a staple of the Halloween season, having repeated viewings on Freeform throughout the month of October, its own stage show at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World, and plenty of themed merchandise and food offerings. (And don’t you worry; the original film will be available to watch on Disney+ on launch day.)

This is far from Disney’s first attempt at revisiting Hocus Pocus; back in 2017, a remake of the film was reportedly in development for Disney Channel.

Disney+ Testing Autoplay Function

While we’re still out here twiddling our thumbs till the official launch of Disney+, testing for the streaming service and its app are well underway in the Netherlands. Resources like disneyplusser.nl have been posting on all the latest updates, most notably the addition of the Autoplay function in the latest app update.

The latest 1.1.0 update for the Disney Plus app brings the addition of a lower-half countdown screen during the credits of the end of an episode, featuring a thumbnail and details of the following episode (episode number, name, season.) The next episode then starts automatically after a few seconds. This feature was not available in the old 1.0.3 version of the app. However, it is unknown whether the autoplay function will work on all devices.

If you are lucky enough to be in the test group for Disney+ and have not been able to switch to the new version yet, this latest update is being rolled out in phases to keep from overloading local servers, and may take several days.

Verizon to Offer 1 Free Year of Disney+

Verizon has announced that new and existing Verizon wireless unlimited customers as well as new Fios and 5G home internet customers will be offered one free year of Disney+. This is a huge coup for Disney in the competitive streaming landscape as it will net them millions of early subscribers to try their service with the option to renew (for a fee) at the end of the free year.

Offers like this are common for companies trying to gain a strong initial user base, which is imperative to long term success in highly competitive industries. Apple TV+ offers a similar deal for those buying a new select Apple device, offering one free year of Apple TV+.

Disney+ launches November 12th for $6.99 a month with Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu bundles costing $12.99 a month.

Disney+ May Not Work On Certain Devices

According to early testing in the Netherlands, Disney+ may not work on a number of popular consumer devices. Much like other streaming services, Disney is using DRM, or Digital Rights Management, to help prevent piracy, but is using a much more strict version.

Disney is using a DRM service provided by Google called Widevine, which offers three different levels of security. Currently, Disney+ is using level 1, which is the strictest level and is not supported by Chromebooks and many older Android devices.

Streaming services like Netflix use level 3 DRM, which doesn’t support HD streaming on mobile devices and some Android devices. Disney+ using type 1 allows it to stream in HD, but limits the number of supported devices.

It is unknown at this time if the use of level 1 is just for the testing period so that video isn’t leaked, or if that will be the standard upon the full launch next month.
