On top of all that, Freshman Year is featuring the most impressive lineup of Marvel villains to date:
It’s beyond insane that Marvel Studios is going ahead to announce one of the most landmark animated series to date, primarily based on the absurd amount of characters that are becoming canon.
Given that this new series is animated, Tom Holland will most likely not be returning due to the fact of the actor’s busy schedule and Hudson Thames taking over the role of Spidey in What If…?
Spider-Man: Freshman Year is hitting Disney+ in 2024, joining the upcoming What If…? season two and Marvel’s Zombies, the franchise’s first TV-MA series coming to the streaming service.
On Friday, July 22, Disney held one of its 18 panels at Comic-Con, currently taking place in San Diego, California. During that panel, Disney shared a ton of new information on one of its newest series, National Treasure: Edge of History. The series will star Lisette Olivera as Jess — a DREAMer who sets out on a historical adventure to discover her hidden family secrets. Justin Bartha will return to his role as Riley Poole — a genius computer expert — and Harvey Keitel will return as Peter Sandusky — a kind but serious FBI agent.
We don’t know when the series is set to come to Disney+, but Disney has finally shared a teaser trailer of just what we can expect from the exciting continuation of the franchise. The teaser was first shared at Comic-Con, but now Disney has posted it on its official social media accounts, and you can check it out below!
Again, Disney has not announced a release date for the new show, but we do know that it is being executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, alongside Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, who wrote the scripts for both National Treasure and National Treasure: Book Of Secrets. Jon Turteltaub, who directed the original films, also executive produced and Mira Nair directed. Catherine-Zeta Jones will also have a recurring role as treasure hunter, Billie.
Formula 1 is the fastest growing sport in America. The international auto racing series regularly sees about 1.4 million American viewers each week, that’s a 53% increase in viewership from last season. This rise in viewership is thanks, in part, to the tumultuous championship race at the end of last season where decisions by the race authorities allowed for a dramatic ending. Max Verstappen snatched the title of World Champion from the hands of race leader (and 6 time World Champion) Lewis Hamilton at the last second after a very tense and evenly matched season. The rise in viewership also owes much to Disney+ competitor, Netflix, who produces a show about the racing series called Formula 1: Drive to Survive.
It’s this series that prompted something of a bidding war for the rights to stream F1 races in America with Netflix vying to wrest the rights from Disney, who currently owns the streaming rights and regularly airs races on ESPN. In the end, Disney won out but it cost them. In order to keep the rights they paid 1500% more (you read that correctly, that’s 15 with two zeros). That’s not an insignificant chuck of change. In fact, that’s approximately 75 million dollars. This secures Disney the exclusive rights to stream the growing sport in America for another 3 years.
If this season is any indication, Disney made a good choice. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Redbull’s Max Verstappen are locked in a close race for the championship. Its either mans game at this point. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is throwing his hat in the ring as well and making a comeback against all odds. It’s definitely a season to remember.
Next year will see an additional race come to America which will drive the sports popularity even higher in the country. For years, the US Grand Prix in Austin Texas was the only time the racing circuit came to America, making it relatively easy to forget in the minds of Americans. Next year however, they will race in Austin as they’ve done for years, Miami for the second year in a row, and they will add a race through the streets of Las Vegas for the first time ever. That will be a race worth seeing and well worth Disney’s bid for the streaming rights.
This is not the first time F1 and Disney have teamed up! In 1995 F.O.C.A Administration (which would later become Formula 1) signed an exclusive merchandising deal with Specialized Licensing Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Disney. More recently, however, F1 legend Michael Schumacher and current drivers Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettle, and Lewis Hamilton lent their voices in Pixar’s animated film, Cars.
One of the most highly anticipated shows to come to Disney+ finally has a title! Up until now, the show based on the film series National Treasure has been known simply as “Disney’s National Treasure Series”. However, ahead of San Diego’s Comic Con where the show is hosting a panel, the official title was announced on Twitter. National Treasure: Edge of History will be the show’s moniker and it has fans excited.
Though the series won’t feature Nicholas Cage, star of the popular film franchise that the show is based off of, there will still be all of the action, suspense, and drama we have come to know and love from the movies. The logo doesn’t reveal much, but it reveals enough to know that the feel of the movies will be preserved in the show. It has been compared to “Indiana Jones-esqe adventure and intrigue” and we have to agree with that assessment, at least if the movies are any indication.
The series will feature a new generation of treasure hunters. Jess (Lisette Alexis), is a DREAMer who is determined to solve the mystery about her family’s hidden past to save an ancient Pan-American Treasure. Throughout the series she will have to outwit and outmaneuver dangers and those who seek to stop her from uncovering the truth.
Though Nicholas Cage will not be returning to his role, his co-star Justin Bartha will be reprising his role as Riley Poole on a recurring basis which will tie the new series to the films. Catherine Zeta-Jones also joins the cast to provide a bit of intrigue as a billionaire black marketeer. Lydon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, and Jordan Rodrigue will also join the series cast.
Production is currently underway, and while the series does not yet have a debut date, it is believed that the series will make its way to Disney+ in late 2022 or early 2023.
