Elderly Guest’s Plans to Bury Husband’s Ashes at Disney World Goes Horribly Wrong

Via InsideTheMagic.net

The magic of a Disney theme park Resort is that it’s not only just attractions and characters and Mickey Mouse merchandise, it’s nostalgia and memories and a place where family, friends, couples, and groups can share magical moments with each other.

That is what Walt Disney World Resort was to Joyce and Gordon Jackson from Wales, United Kingdom. And that is why Joyce Jackson, 78, wanted to bury some of her late husband’s ashes on the Disney property — until it all went wrong.

Walt Disney World means a lot to a lot of people. Despite recent controversies surrounding rising prices, Park Passes, and trouble for Annual Passholders, the Disney Resort in Orlando, Central Florida draws millions each year. From long-planned family vacations to spur-of-the-moment trips to Disney Springs, Disney World retains its Most Magical Place status, at least judging by the sheer volume of Guests that attend the theme parks year after year.

For Joyce Jackson, her memories of Walt Disney World Resort are special, thanks to her husband, Gordon. Unfortunately, Mr. Jackson suffered a tragic accident and lost his life. To honor his memory and celebrate the many trips they had to the Disney Resort, Mrs. Jackson planned a trip to the United States in order to bury some of his ashes, along with their wedding rings, in one of the gardens of their favorite Disney hotel Resort — “Gordon loved it there.”

But the plans to make this new memory at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort would end in an upsetting disaster for Mrs. Jackson, as the airline on which she traveled to Florida would lose her suitcase. Mrs. Jackson told North Wales Live (via Manchester Evening News):

“Gordon absolutely loved it there. He would talk to the characters. It wasn’t a pilgrimage but I wanted to bury some of his ashes and our wedding rings there.”

The widow went on to explain the events that led to her arriving at Orlando International Airport (MCO) without her treasured items:

“At Manchester Airport I was told I had to use the self-service bag drop. I did that and got a luggage label. A man put it on. It wasn’t a sticky label where you loop it round a handle and stick both ends together. It was more like a paper one. But it must have come off.

“But the worst thing about it was the ashes and rings were in the suitcase. I know you can’t take a person’s ashes with you so I only had a few ashes and our wedding rings. I was going to bury them in a garden at Caribbean Beach Resort. The main ashes are in a rose pot in our garden.”

Mrs. Jackson, a self-confessed light traveler, did not even have a toothbrush or spare change of clothes on her upon landing in Florida and realizing her suitcase was over 3,000 miles away. The 78-year-old said that Virgin Atlantic “didn’t care” about the mishap and instead it was Disney that helped the Guest.

“I had to wash my underwear every night with shower gel. But Disney were very good, considering it was not their problem. They gave me a toothbrush and arranged for a taxi to take me to a supermarket so I could buy hairspray and toothpaste. I also bought three dresses, a T-shirt and a bag.”

Despite believing this was her last chance to bury the ashes in Florida — she said, “I can’t go back because I can’t afford it and I’m 78,” — and keep her husband’s memory alive in the Sunshine State and at the Disney Park, Mrs. Jackson plowed on with her Disney vacation, an action that she says her husband would have been proud of her for.

“I couldn’t stay in a hotel room. I did go out every day. I had to enjoy it. I went on the boats and the cable cars – I went to the places that we loved. It was not a pilgrimage. It was not sad until they lost the suitcase then it was sad.”

Joyce and Gordon has been married for 57 years until tragedy struck last June when Mr. Jackson suffered a fainting episode outside and fell, fracturing his skull. He never woke up.

As for Virgin Atlantic, the airline has apologized to Mrs. Jackson and is investigating what happened to her suitcase at Manchester Airport.

Orlando Tourism Is Giving Away 12 Free Disney World Vacations!

Disney has been in the news a lot lately, but not for the best of reasons. Last week, Disney announced some pretty big price increases across the board, from theme park tickets to Disney Genie+, and even bottles of water. Guests were not overly happy, as a Disney vacation seems to be getting further and further out of reach for many families.

However, the Orlando Tourism Association wants families to still be able to enjoy time at the Most Magical Place on Earth. So, they are giving away some free vacations!

Disney Adds Big Cast Member Perk

For some, working at a Disney Resort is a dream job. Being able to be right in the middle of the magic and help families create memories is something not a lot of people get to do. Heck, some people even move across the country — or even the world — for the chance to work at places like Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

However, recently, it seems that Disney is having a little bit of trouble keeping Cast Members happy. Not only does Disney frequently get called out for its low wages — which left some workers living in their cars — but there were also a number of walkouts and protests when Disney CEO Bob Chapek called Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill, “irrelevant to the company”.

Pixar Walkout

There was also the issue of Cast Members and studio employees not receiving the same great perks that they once did. Now, however, it looks like Disney is trying to increase the perks — at least a little bit.

For years, one of the biggest perks was that Cast Members would be able to get into the theme parks pretty much whenever they wanted and bring some of their family or friends with them. They were also given a number of complimentary tickets that they could give to friends and family, so they could get into the Parks without the Cast Member.

Those days have been significantly cut down and last year, Disney told Cast Members they could either have the theme park perk, or they could receive the Disney Bundle — which includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ — for free.

This year, Disney has changed course and has informed Cast Members that they will not have to choose. Cast Members will now be able to have both the theme park access and the Disney Bundle. However, they will only have free access to the ad-supported version of Disney+, which will launch on December 8. Disney has not told Cast Members if they will be able to pay to upgrade to the ad-free tier.

Disney Cast Members also get perks like discounts at other Disney theme parks and Disney Resorts. They also get discounts at Disney hotels. The one exception is Tokyo Disney Resort, which is not owned by Disney.

EPCOT’s “Future World Hotel”: New Permit Filed?

A permit has been filed by Buena Vista Construction Company at Disney World in Orange County, Florida, and the address on the permit is reigniting the excitement over the prospect that Disney’s prepping to break ground on EPCOT’s once-talked about “Future World Hotel” inside the gates at Disney World’s second park.

Last month, Disney’s President of Parks, Experiences, and Products, Josh D’Amaro, welcomed fans to one of the last panels of the 2022 D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center inside the location’s Hall D23. Every coveted seat in the house was occupied–all 7,000 of them–by eager and excited Disney fans who waited with bated breath to hear what’s in store for Disney Parks around the world over the next few years, this writer included.

D’Amaro talked about exciting projects in the works at Tokyo Disney Resort, Shanghai Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. He shared exciting updates about happenings at Disneyland Resort, including the arrival of the Hulk and Mando and Grogu at the California parks, as well as the kickoff to Disney’s 100th anniversary celebration, which begins at Disneyland next year on January 27.

When D’Amaro mentioned Walt Disney World, the crowd cheered as many had arrived in Anaheim with their own projections about the D23 Expo reveals for Disney World. (After all, weren’t we all hopeful for the return of the Disney Dining Plan and a fifth park in Florida?)

D’Amaro went about his agenda, announcing some surprises for fans about “blue-sky” projects on the drawing board for Disney World, and with each new announcement, the boisterous crowd got just a few decibels louder. But by the end of his presentation, many of us in the crowd began to mull over his announcements and compare them with our individual mental lists of projections, as if it were second nature.

BREAKING: Themed Lands in Development for 'Coco', 'Encanto', Disney Villains at Magic Kingdom

As we recounted what we were told, it became very apparent that the 2019 D23 Expo was EPCOT’s time to shine. While there were a few updates about EPCOT during the panel last month, the big news was largely for other areas. We had hoped we might hear some kind of firming-up or confirmation on plans that were rumored to be in the works in 2021: the first-ever Disney Resort Hotel inside the gates at EPCOT, Disney’s Future World Hotel.

The first talk of an onsite EPCOT hotel surfaced years ago in 2017, and some Disney super-sleuths dug deeper to find that the address mentioned for the location of the new EPCOT hotel was 1474 Avenue of the Stars on the Walt Disney World property, an address that corresponds to a location inside EPCOT. But during the 2017 D23 Expo, CEO Bob Iger furnished zero unveilings about such a hotel.

Talk of this mystery resort hotel at EPCOT continued and finally died down some, leading up to the 2019 D23 Expo, during which Disney’s execs shared huge news about plans to completely revamp the Future World section of EPCOT, as well as plans for a brand-new Moana-inspired attraction, The Journey of Water, a space-themed restaurant next to Mission: SPACE called Space 220, and even a new Mary Poppins-themed attraction that would be constructed in the United Kingdom pavilion on the World Showcase.

Menu Updates Bring New Dishes to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge will soon be getting some new menu items at Territory Lounge and Roaring Fork.

From a Disney Cast Member;

I hope you’re ready to learn about what’s cooking over at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge because this resort has some exciting, and delicious, updates at two of its locations – Territory Lounge and Roaring Fork. Both of these spots are getting some new additions to their menus, and trust me, they won’t disappoint.

Let’s kick things off at Territory Lounge where, starting today, the menu is entering a whole new territory filled with delicious eats and sips that will leave you coming back again and again. This hidden gem found within Disney’s Wilderness Lodge showcases shareable dishes highlighting tasty flavors, but with an elevated and fun twist.

If you love popcorn, the Territory Popcorn Sampler features the chef’s take on popcorn with spicy, caramel, sea salt, truffle, and BBQ flavors. The Artisanal Cheese and Charcuterie isn’t your average charcuterie board – you have to see it to believe it! Chef Brian Knox carefully selected Oregon and Utah cheeses with a focus on smokey notes and even a cheese wrapped in honey and sea salt – accompanied by fresh honeycomb, pickled vegetables, and handcrafted bread.

There are also some flavorful flatbreads new to the menu. The Loaded Baked Potato Flatbread is topped with bacon, potato, chive cream cheese, and crème fresh while the Salmon Run is topped with an in-house dill-cured gravlax salmon with truffle cream cheese, fried capers, onions, black sea salt, and dill. Now those are some bites to fuel you up for any expedition!

Rounding out the new menu items are the Bacon on the Wire and the Bone and Brie. The Bacon on the Wire takes a new meaning to an elevated dish with black pepper candied bacon cured in smoked paprika and bourbon, cold smoked, and roasted perfectly with a bourbon glaze. And, it doesn’t just have bacon; it features deviled eggs topped with fried shrimp, chipotle beef jerky, and salmon candy with a bourbon drizzle.

The Bone and Brie will leave you wanting to devour every last bite on this foodie adventure. With roasted bone marrow, honey-baked brie baked in a cast iron skillet with marionberry onion jam, this shareable dish is a must-try.

In addition to these mouthwatering eats, there are new hand-crafted beverages joining the menu for those over 21 looking to indulge. The National 95, a coast-to-coast twist on the classic French 95 cocktail, combines Whistle Pig Rye from the East coast with simple syrup, and sparkling Argyle Brut from the West coast while the Lewis and Clark-inspired L&C G&T features Fords Gin, St. Germaine, and elderflower tonic, garnished with a cucumber ribbon and fresh flower.

If you’re interested in fruity flavors, there’s a few options for you too! The Orchards Bounty is made up of Ketel One Peach & Orange Blossom Botanicals vodka, house-made pinot gris syrup, Dolin Blanc vermouth, and Aperol. Sangria fans will love the Orange Spiced Sangria, a drink with Chateau Ste Michelle cabernet, Cointreau orange liqueur, apple cider, and house-made orange spice syrup. The Northwoods masterfully brings together Bulleit Rye, house-made rosemary syrup, citrus juices, and maple into one delicious cocktail.

For a campfire feel on a classic cocktail, the Smores Old Fashioned has Elijah Craig bourbon, toasted marshmallow syrup, and chocolate bitters garnished with perfectly toasted marshmallows – yum! And finally, the Timeless Elias is a smoking libation featuring Macallan 12 yr. scotch, house-made vanilla bean syrup, and Courvoisier VSOP.

As you can see, the Territory Lounge is bringing its best to the foodie game and taking you on a culinary journey out west through your taste buds with all these new and exciting items!

Beginning on October 11, Roaring Fork is also getting some tasty new treats that you are definitely going to want to try. Kickstart your day with one of the new breakfast options. The Meat and Potatoes Quiche with broccoli, potatoes, bacon, ham, and gouda and the Vegetable Lover’s Quiche with peppers, onions, leeks, green peas, potatoes, broccoli, fresh herb, and cheddar are delicious options to fuel up on before your adventure. For some sweet starts, indulge in the Warm Freshly Baked Cinnamon Roll with fresh blueberries and blueberry cream cheese frosting or the extra-large Warm Grizzly Bear Claw with mixed nuts and raisin filling.

As the day moves onto lunch and dinner, there are some more items recently added that you need to taste. The Asian-Style Noodle Salad is quite refreshing with tofu, mixed vegetables, crispy rice noodles, and fried wontons. You can even add chicken or shrimp for some added protein! The Heirloom Tomato Salad with pickled wild mushrooms, burrata cheese, red pepper pesto, and basil is also a tasty, lighter option.

If you’re looking for a heartier dish, I’ve got two more for you. The Country-style Baked Meatloaf features buttery green peas, chunky mashed potatoes, and gravy for a classic meal. The Barbecued Brisket and Burnt Ends with potato hash, fiery coleslaw, and cornbread features some comfort BBQ fare packed with flavor.

Now, if you’re like me and have a love of sweets, there are quite a few desserts available all day long that are joining Roaring Fork’s repertoire. The Almond Walnut Bundt Cake is a must with a coffee glaze and cream cheese icing. If you’ve got a taste for blueberry, the house-made Blueberry Thyme Crumb Pie is a seasonal item that will change flavors throughout the year, so you can keep coming back. The adorable Bear Mousse Cake brings together raspberry mousse, almond cake, and dark chocolate ganache into a treat that is almost too cute to eat – almost.

Lastly, Humphrey the Bear has a passion for honey and the new Humphrey Bee Hive Cake is the perfect sweet eat for him. This delightful dish is made with chocolate cake, passionfruit mousse, sugar bees, and a white chocolate Humphrey on top.

I, for one, can’t wait to take a journey over to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge to indulge in all the goodies coming to both Territory Lounge and Roaring Fork. I sure hope you’re as excited as me!
