Official Statement Regarding Skyliner Accident

In the wake of the Disney Skyliner accident and evacuations that took place Saturday night, Disney has released an official statement regarding what happened:

“We have a team diligently looking into the cause of the malfunction on the Epcot line of the Disney Skyliner. We have been in contact with the guests, many of whom were on the Skyliner for more than three hours until we were able to restart the system. We express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and continue to work with each guest individually.”

Originally billed as merely “unexpected downtime”, Disney is now regarding the accident a “malfunction” of the Epcot line. The Disney Skyliner has yet to reopen and will remain closed until further notice.

If you are unfamiliar with the events surrounding the Disney Skyliner accident, around 9:00 PM on Saturday, a photo of piled-up gondolas began to circulate, with many guests taking to social media to divulge that the Disney Skyliner system had unexpectedly stopped, leaving guests trapped for hours. Evacuations then began along the line, but it was a lengthy and tedious process, with some guests requiring medical care upon evacuation. Disney reports that no guests were injured.

If you’re new to the Disney Skyliner system itself, it opened on September 29th to mixed reviews. Early images of inside emergency black box kits inside each gondola revealed that the kits contained glow sticks, packaged water, and human waste containers.

Update on Bridge Construction Connecting Grand Floridian and Magic Kingdom

One of the top construction projects is that of the long-awaited walkway linking Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and the Magic Kingdom.

While construction at the site has been slow (the bridge arrived quickly, but has laid staged for weeks now), new developments, like the rotating dial mechanism for what we now know will be a swing-arm bridge, have been installed.

You can see that safety cones and barriers have been set up. Additional metal siding is also staged by the work dock.

All of the railings have been installed on the sides of the bridge, which features wood decking.

Seeing as though this bridge will be a swinging bridge (meaning the bridge will literally swing out into the lake to allow for maritime traffic, like the Electric Water Parade barges, nightly), it requires a rotary mechanism. It’s finally been installed, which means we are one step closer to getting our long-awaited walkway!

One end of the bridge will lay stationed over that round mechanism. Of course, further progress is needed before we can see the finalized product.

This walkway will eventually allow guests to walk from the Polynesian Resort and Grand Floridian Resort to the Magic Kingdom, without taking the monorail.

It awaits to be seen as to how long this project will take to complete, but one would assume it would be done before Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary.

Skyliner Closed Today After Accident @ Riviera Resort

The Disney Skyliner will be closed while Disney investigates after guests were stranded for hours last night on the new transportation system at Walt Disney World. A Walt Disney World spokeswoman said there were no reported injuries, and it was “unexpected downtime” on the Skyliner.

Guests staying on Walt Disney World property received a message stating that the Skyliner will be closed today, October 6.

Cast Members are informing guests at the gate to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort that the transportation system is currently down for the day, but that there is the bus service to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot available.

Disney Security is currently posted at all Skyliner entrances and areas to prevent guests from meandering into stations, as they are likely under investigation given last night’s accident.

Disney’s early Sunday release said it will be working with guests individually “regarding impacts to their visit with us.” Some stranded passengers report receiving four “all-day tickets” and a $200 gift card for their lost time at the resort.
