Disney Loses Nearly 95% of Its Classic Animation Material

Via DisDining.com

As the year 2024 draws closer, Disney fans have become increasingly vocal and concerned about The Walt Disney Company losing the rights to Mickey Mouse. But Disney has already lost almost 95% of the classic animation material from its feature films, such as Snow White and the Seven DwarfsFantasiaDumbo, and Bambi, and no amount of lobbying Congress could have stopped the loss.

One of the earliest versions of Disney’s Mickey Mouse is set to enter the public domain on January 1, 2024, ending a 96-year-long copyright held by the entertainment giant since Mickey’s first cartoon, Steamboat Willie, debuted in 1928. At that time, Mickey’s copyright was valid for 28 years, with the option for Disney to extend it for an additional 28 years, meaning that the original copyright for the Steamboat Willie character was set to enter the public domain at the end of 1983. Facing a loss of ownership, Disney sprang into action to save the beloved mouse from life outside The Walt Disney Company.

Disney wasted no time, bypassing any potential riff-raff and going directly to the United States government for help, lobbying Congress in an effort to hold on to Mickey a little longer. Whether federal lawmakers revered Disney as an untouchable entertainment powerhouse or the American people had elected a Congress full of Mickey fans, we’ll never know, but Congress happily extended Disney’s copyright by enacting the “Mickey Mouse Protection Act,” or, as it is formally known, the Copyright Term Extension Act.

Mickey Mouse's Copyright To Expire and Mickey will be Public Domain

Copyrights don’t last forever, though, and when the clock strikes midnight on January 1, 2024, Disney will be forced to say farewell to Steamboat Willie–though his trademark will remain.

But while there may still be some measure of hope for Mickey, there’s no hope for a loss of Disney property that has already occurred–one that never made the headlines as Steamboat Willie did. The Walt Disney Company has already suffered a tragic loss of some of its intellectual property, and the company has no one to blame but its very own animators.

In the 1930s and 1940s, when Walt Disney’s animators were tasked with hand-drawing the characters and backgrounds for some of the studio’s most beloved animated films, they embraced their work with great passion and dedication. They apparently enjoyed their work and had lots of fun on the clock. Back then, hand-drawn animation was a lengthy, labor-intensive process, but it was business as usual for those in that line of work. Because of this, animators were often very carefree–and sometimes careless–when it came to the fragile vintage art they were creating.

Arthur Stevens, a long-time Disney animator and director who worked on classic Disney animated films The Rescuers (1977), The Fox and the Hound (1981), and The Black Cauldron (1985), once explained that animators used to toss finished animation canvases on the floor when they were finished with them. Some animators even used the canvases to slide around on the floors. While the practice might have been good for team-building, it was entirely destructive for the artwork itself.

It created multiple problems for the studio as well. Over the years, the carelessness of Disney’s animators resulted in the loss of nearly 95% of Disney’s vintage animation material–a loss from which recovery is not possible. In an effort to prevent further losses, experts now employ preservation techniques to care for the remaining material. The goal is to lower the risk of further damage and loss of Disney’s treasured and priceless artwork.

Fortunately for Disney fans of every age, all of the films for which the animation material was lost are still available in some physical and digital formats and can be streamed on the Disney+ platform.

Injury Narrowly Avoided on Tron as Safety Rules Are Ignored

Tron Lightcyle / Run is Walt Disney World’s newest attraction. The coaster, which opened up on April 4th, invites you to step into the grid as it zooms across “a world with no horizon.” It became an instant fan-favorite and regularly turns would-be riders away from the virtual queue and Lightning Lane to its incredible popularity.  It’s not hard to see why it’s so popular– not only is it Disney’s newest attraction, but it’s also its fastest coaster!

Tron Lightcyle / Run reaches speeds of nearly 60 mph and races across Guest walkways at Magic Kingdom. Because of this, Disney put some first-of-their-kind rules in place when the ride opened. Loose articles have always been permitted on Disney rides. Even Rock n Roller Coaster, formerly Disney World’s only attraction that goes upside-down. Not So with Tron.

Guests are required to place all loose items in lockers which are provided at no charge to Guests. This not only prevents damage to the ride and personal property but it also protects people down below. Unlike other theme parks, Disney has never had a high-speed ride that traveled over walkways before. Falling objects from the ride could cause serious injury or death to Guests, so lockers are required.

One Guest either forgot or decided the rules didn’t apply to them (we’re trying to be positive here, despite the many signs and Cast Members who make sure everyone is aware). In a blink-and-you-miss-it incident, their sunglasses flew off the ride and fell from the ride vehicle, very nearly missing Guests down below. Luckily no one was injured (we won’t get into the physics, but at the speed and velocity the glasses were traveling, their force could have caused injury if a Guest had been struck).

Travel Agent Alyssa Travels caught the incident on camera and posted a video to TikTok. She issued a warning that this is exactly why lockers are necessary on the ride. You can see the video here.

The incident occurred in the first few seconds of the video. Did you catch it? We had to watch it several times before we finally saw it. It goes to show that Disney’s rules are in place for a reason. Things can happen so fast but produce catastrophic results. Disney has nets in place over the walkways to catch debris, but they aren’t foolproof. In this case, the glasses fell into the net and actually bounced out!

TRON Lightcycle / Run is the newest attraction at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Located in Tomorrowland, the new experience welcomes Guests to “speed across a world with no horizons in a high-stakes race based on the Disney sci-fi film TRON: Legacy” and “Leave the real world behind to join Team Blue in a quest across the Grid—the dark, computerized world with no horizons from TRON.”

Per Disney World’s official website:

In 1982, Disney made filmmaking history with “TRON,” the first production of its kind to mix live action with computer-generated visuals and backlit animation. This iconic film went on to inspire video games, comic books, an animated series, and the 2010 sequel “TRON: Legacy:—as well as this new Disney theme park attraction.

With the rise of recent dangerous behavior, we feel the need to remind Guests that no one is above the rules. Many have an “it can’t happen to me” mentality regarding terrible tragedy, but things can and do happen, even at Walt Disney World. Please observe all safety warnings when you’re visiting Disney Parks. Not doing so could result in serious injury.

Little Girl Experiences Near-Death Experience While Riding Classic Attraction

Walt Disney World Resort has easily become one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Not only because of each Disney Park’s family-friendly atmosphere but because of how safe the Resort is.

And truly, it is! Out of each pillar or key behind Walt Disney World’s success, safety is the highest priority. As a result, severe injuries and even deaths, while possible, are incredibly uncommon.

However, one anonymous Disney World Cast Member recently shared a story in an online forum detailing a very frightening near-death experience.

Kiss the Girl Scene Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid

The Cast Member was working in Magic Kingdom at the time, on the Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid attraction.

While unloading Guests from the Magic Kingdom attraction, the Cast Member heard frantic screaming and orders to call 911. When they looked over, they saw a little girl that looked to be about ten, eleven, or twelve years old.

Reportedly, “her whole arm and side of her neck” was swollen as she had been “bitten or stung” by something while on the slow-moving ride, causing an allergic reaction.

Immediately, the Cast Member shut the ride down and had another Cast Member call emergency services while they helped the Guest off of the ride vehicle.

The girl’s mom hadn’t been aware of any allergies, and the little girl was understandably terrified, as she was “still breathing and awake, but crying and hyperventilating.”

The attraction was held at a standstill for around 10 minutes as they waited for emergency services to arrive. After paramedics arrived, they were later told that the little girl had thankfully recovered.

The kicker?” the Cast Member writes, “Guests had the audacity to complain about the stall.”

Luckily, everything turned out okay during this Disney World accident, thanks to the Cast Member’s level head and quick decision-making.
