Fan-Favorite Returning to EPCOT!

Fans were heartbroken at the removal of one of their favorite EPCOT Future World elements during the overhaul construction at the Disney Park for the 50th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort. But on Friday, Imagineer Zach Riddley announced that it’s officially coming back!

The fiber optic sidewalk lights embedded in the pavement near Spaceship Earth at EPCOT greeted you as you headed out of the Disney Park after viewing of the now retired, late-night Illuminations or taking one last ride on Soarin’. So it was no surprise when fans begged for Disney to bring them back after construction.

The lights were teased in concept art that Disney posted 0n Thursday. But until Zach Riddley confirmed, fans were left wondering if their favorite shimmering sidewalk was truly returning. According to the Imagineer, the sidewalk lights are coming back in a new way. He wrote on Instagram:

We know our guests loved the fiber optics embedded in the pavement at EPCOT, and we’re excited to share that we’re bringing back new illuminated paving designs in World Celebration. These features pay homage to EPCOT’s past, while incorporating updated technology and controllability to deliver some fun new lighting capabilities. As you can see in this image, at the central planter in the heart of World Celebration, the rings of the EPCOT logo will come to life with light and color in an inviting and dynamic celebration of unity.

Much like the reference to Horizons, Universe of Energy, and Kitchen Kabaret at EPCOT’s newest attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Riddley reports that the new lights will pay homage to the Disney Park’s beloved past.

The lights will be a part of a new neighborhood at EPCOT titled World Celebration, which aims to tie the World Showcase with the other sections of the Park and, according to Riddley’s Instagram post, is “Designed with over 12,000 individually controllable lighting fixtures” He continues, “The reimagined nighttime experiences in this new park neighborhood will create a dynamic environment that will transform the area every night.”

Although they’re paying tribute to EPCOT’s past, the new lights will look to the future with updated technology and controllability. Not only will the sidewalk “come to life” with light, but the rings of the new EPCOT logo in the center of World Celebration will also glow colorfully at night, celebrating unity and the themes of the beloved Disney Park’s different lands – World Showcase, Future World, The Land, and, of course, World Celebration.

Video Shows Rockets Destroying Ukrainian Theme Park

The ongoing Russian and Ukrainian conflict is one of the most documented in global history. Cell phones, news cameras, and even surveillance cameras have broadcasted some of the worst moments for the world to see.

Among them is new footage from ABC News out of Kharkiv, Ukraine, a city with a pre-war population of nearly 1.5 million. According to the AP, it is the most recent victim of brutal attacks and unprecedented death.

A new surveillance video shows the moment Russian rockets hit Maxim Gorky Central Park for Culture and Recreation, a small theme park in Kharkiv. The cameras captured over three minutes of footage at multiple spots in the park.

Closed since early on in the war, Gorky Park was empty at the time – video shows rides with tarps over the seats and eerily empty brick roads. Bright yellow rollercoaster tracks and pastel show buildings sit quietly before the camera shakes, a fiery blast fills the screen, and the air is filled with thick, gray dust.

According to a tweet from ABC, no one was killed, and only one person was injured. They wrote:

Dramatic footage captures the moment rockets hit an amusement park in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Fire crews eventually contained the fire and one woman suffered shrapnel wounds from the shelling, according to State Emergency Services.

This latest footage is just another reminder of how the war affects the everyday lives of Ukrainians. A few months ago, Gorky Park would’ve been full of families and children, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Now, it remains quiet and dusty, a symbol of how quickly life can change.

According to CNN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was willing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war as of two weeks ago. But no such meeting has occurred and the destruction continues.

Still, 90% of Americans planned to travel soon amid the ongoing war as of March. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been more eager to travel despite increasing inflation. Several factors are at play: saved stimulus checks, more flexible work-from-home schedules, and the recent removal of mask mandates on public transportation, including airplanes, within the United States.

This is definitely the best way to spend Star Wars day, although it sounds too good to be true, right? Well, that’s because, sadly, it is. Many viewers quickly commented that the man in the video was not actually George Lucas but that this Guest did a remarkable job making himself look like him.

TheThemeParkDuo (@thethemeparkduo) posted a video response confirming that the man in the video was not the mind behind the Star Wars universe. The impersonator tricked nearly everyone who saw him during yesterday’s happenings:

Celebrate Soulfully this Summer at Disneyland Resort, with ‘Tale of the Lion King’ Debuting May 28

This past February, Disney Parks kicked off Celebrate Soulfully offering rich experiences that honor Black heritage and culture. Today, we’re excited to share more ways to “celebrate soulfully” this summer!

Throughout the month of June, Disneyland Resort will invite Guests to continue to experience Celebrate Soulfully as we highlight Black Music Month with daily live entertainment, plus specialty offerings including food, art and more available throughout the resort.

Here’s a sneak peek of some of the excitement to come for Celebrate Soulfully this summer:

“Tale of the Lion King” Debuts May 28 at Disneyland Park

Beginning May 28, 2022, Disneyland Park will welcome “Tale of the Lion King” to its new home at the Fantasyland Theatre where this original, story-theatre adaptation of Disney’s “The Lion King” will be staged in an all-new presentation (as depicted in this artist rendering). At the heart of the production is a traveling troupe known as The Storytellers of the Pride Lands who weave the tale of how a cub becomes a king through dialogue, song, dance and percussion. From the scenic and costume designs to the new original musical arrangements and choreography, every aspect of “Tale of the Lion King” honors and is inspired by the cultural roots of this timeless story.

Also on May 28, Troubadour Tavern will return with new menu items inspired by the show.

Celebrate Soulfully at Disney California Adventure Park with Live Entertainment

Beginning June 1 and running through July 4, Guests will get to enjoy Celebrate Soulfully at Disney California Adventure Park with daily live music celebrating Black music genres from Doo-Wop to Motown. Feel the nostalgia of Carthay Circle and enjoy Philly Phonics, an a cappella vocal group, performing snazzy, jazzy, tunes from the 1920s through today. Five & Dime will also stylishly sing and swing 1920s and ‘30s tunes with brass and sass!

In the evening, head to the Hollywood Backlot to enjoy the summer vibes of this special block party, featuring live musical acts seven nights a week.

“The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure” Exhibit and More Coming to the Downtown Disney District

We’re thrilled to share that “The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure,” a touring exhibit that illustrates the legacy and dynamic history of jazz, will be heading to the Downtown Disney District from June 1 to July 4!

In the “Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure,” Joe Gardner – musician, mentor, and star of Disney and Pixar’s original animated film, “Soul” – takes guests on a musical tour across America, showcasing the rich history of jazz along the way.

As a tribute to a musical art form that was originated by African Americans, the exhibit illustrates the many different cultures and creators who influenced this evolving genre. Walt Disney Imagineering partnered with cultural institutions and subject matter experts to bring this story to life.

We are delighted to bring “The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure” out here to the west coast! Complimentary to all resort Guests, the exhibit will be located in the building adjacent to Star Wars Trading Post.

And while visiting the Downtown Disney District this June, Guests will be able to keep the summer vibes going with live nightly music that is sure to stir the soul, with genres including jazz, R&B, funk, Motown and Doo-Wop. There will also be a DJ performing at the Downtown Disney LIVE! stage on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, playing a variety of upbeat genres.

There will be even more ways to feed every part of the soul as we continue to “celebrate soulfully” this summer at the Disneyland Resort – making it a great time to visit! We look forward to sharing additional details soon.
