All the way back in 2016, Disney announced that they were developing a live-action remake of the classic film, The Little Mermaid. The remake was just one of many remakes Disney was going to remake. Disney has also remade Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, The Lion King, and Mulan, among others.
Details on The Little Mermaid were scant, but over time, it was announced that Halle Bailey would be playing the titular sea creature. Javier Bardem was also announced for the role of the sea king, King Triton. Hamilton star Daveed Diggs was given the role of Sebastian and comedian Awkwafina will be playing Ariel’s friend Scuttle.
Also cast in the new movie is veteran comedic actress Melissa McCarthy — who will play the sea witch Ursula. Some were surprised to see McCarthy cast in a musical role, considering she has never been in a musical. One of those who was surprised — and slightly disappointed — was superstar singer Lizzo. Lizzo had expressed interest in the past for The Little Mermaid role.
Lizzo recently spoke to Variety and shared that she had actually run into Melissa McCarthy and told her that she had auditioned for the role McCarthy ended up getting. Per Variety:
Lizzo ended up running into McCarthy during the taping of Adele’s “One Night Only” CBS concert special in Los Angeles, and the two women bonded over their shared Ursula history.
“She was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa,’” Lizzo said. “And I was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa. And I also auditioned for Ursula.’ And she was like, ‘Well, why the hell did I get the part?,’ which is a classic Melissa McCarthy thing to say. And then I was like, ‘Girl, because my audition was terrible.’ And I say that as Tyler Perry walks by. And I was like — ruined my chances there. And then she goes, ‘This is my daughter Vivian.’ And I’m like, ‘Get out of here, because my name is Melissa Viviane.’ We were looking at each other like, ‘What the hell is going on?’”
After a series of delays due to COVID, filming has wrapped on the live-action film, and it is currently in post-production. Disney has announced that the film will be released on Memorial Day weekend, hitting theaters on May 26, 2023. Even though the film is being released later than originally expected, Bailey has assured fans that it is worth the wait.
There are a lot of experiences that make a Disney vacation incredibly special. From eating a ton of excellent food to riding fun attractions that take you to faraway places, and all the great merchandise you can wear all year round. One experience that is always special, no matter how old you are, is the character interactions that can be found at all the Parks. Who doesn’t want to give Mickey a big hug or create some mischief with Stitch?
When it comes to these princeless meetings, Disney does not want any Guest to get confused about whether the character is a part of the Park experience or not. Disney also knows that Guests love to dress up as their favorite characters. While Disneybounding — wearing regular clothes that represent specific characters — is completely acceptable, Disney has strict rules when it comes to outright costumes.
A viral video has been making rounds, showing a group of women, dressed in full princess costumes, being escorted through Magic Kingdom Park by a group of Disney Cast Members. The women admit that they are not Disney princesses. The person filming is told that Guests are allowed to wear costumes because it is Halloween time. However, they are all then taken to a closed-off area of the Park.
The original video says that the women were kicked out of the Park. The follow-up videos on TikTok were flooded with comments on both sides of the argument. Many were pointing out that Disney does not typically allow costumes like that into the Park. Others argued that the women were allowed to dress like that because it was Halloween, the one time of year when adults can wear costumes.
Disney World reserves the right to exclude visitors to their gated attractions who wear clothing that could create a distraction. This policy is in effect at the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, and Disney Springs.
Examples of unacceptable attire include:
Clothing displaying offensive messages/language
Adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as a costume (children under age 10 are excluded)
Clothing made with offensive material, (ie transparent)
Clothing that is excessively torn
Clothing which exposes inappropriate portions of the body such as string bikini tops, G-strings, bikini bottoms, etc.
Guests wearing wedding attire are discouraged from entering the theme parks.
All Disney theme park guests are required to wear shirts and shoes at all times. Swimsuit tops are allowed when worn with other appropriate clothing.
Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon have other criteria in place which may vary from the general appearance guidelines. Depending on the venue and event, variations may be acceptable.
March 1 marked the official launch of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort, and to celebrate we have a special video to share from a galaxy far, far away.
Actor Oscar Isaac, who plays Resistance hero Poe Dameron in the latest Star Wars film trilogy, recently visited the Halcyon starcruiser to tour the ship with Disney Imagineer Scott Trowbridge and try out some of the exciting onboard activities. Check out his adventure, and hear his reaction to seeing this first-of-its-kind immersive experience for himself.
While there is much to look forward to at the Walt Disney World Resort in the coming months, few projects are as exciting as the new Guardians of the Galaxy-themed attraction coming to EPCOT.
We have been watching the construction of this new attraction closely, with updates coming out every so often. Recently, the ride’s official release date was leaked by none other than a Disney Executive himself, quickly deleting and editing the Tweet. Now, Disney has seemingly given us a real, intended close-up look at the interior of the show building.
Imagineer Zach Riddley shared the sneak peek on his Instagram, showing off the loading area of the new ride. The caption on the post said:
Recently, Imagineering revealed a first-look at the incredible load station of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in @DisneyD23 magazine. It’s a stunning space – where EPCOT guests will get a chance to step aboard a Nova Corps ship and load into their Starjumper vehicles to take off with the Guardians of the Galaxy on a race through time and space! Our ride team has been hard at work testing this innovative ride system which we call an Omnicoaster. I have had the chance to experience myself, and I can tell you – this is truly unlike anything we’ve ever done! As we get closer to our Summer 2022 opening I’ll be sharing more about the design and the wonderful details that make this experience part of our EPCOT story!
As you can see, Imagineers are still hard at work on the interior of the huge building. While no “official” opening date has been confirmed, Disney is expecting the ride to open this summer. More on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT:
