Disney Tries to Fix Galactic Starcruiser Disaster

The Walt Disney Company is facing a bit of a disaster with its newest endeavor, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.

For months at this point, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser has come under fire for myriad reasons, from the lackluster appearance of the “luxury” Corellian starliner’s staterooms to the $6,000+ cost for a two-night trip.

Some fans have even called the entire situation surrounding the costly Resort hotel “just a mess.”

At one point, Disney even went so far as to remove a particular marketing video following intense backlash. But now, the company has given Disney Parks fans a new first look inside the Starcruiser and it appears that they are attempting to fix everything that went wrong the first time around with higher quality video and iconic background music taken straight from the Star Wars movies.

In this new video [below], Lucasfilm Franchise Content & Strategy executive Matt Martin and Walt Disney Imagineer Travis Finstein share details about the experience. The duo noted:

“When passengers come to the Starcruiser today, they will encounter a Halcyon that has been recently restored to its former glory, the way it really looked in the earliest days of its voyages across the galaxy — the way its meant to be seen.”

Although some fans believe the Starcruiser experience is already becoming less immersive before it has even launched, Disney has recently been making an effort to connect the Halcyon luxury starliner to the rest of the Star Wars story with additions like Star Wars: The High Republic novel “Mission to Disaster” by Justina Ireland and the upcoming “The Princess and Scoundrel,” which will feature Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa’s wedding onboard the Corellian ship.

Although Disney continues to assert that they are “pleased with demand” for the Star Wars-themed hotel, cancelations have been pouring in, so this clear effort to fix some of the earlier marketing mistakes for the experience speaks volumes.

Hundreds of Guests are forced to use ladders, evacuate Kilimanjaro Safari trucks

Guests enjoying a popular attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom were met with an unexpected turn of events that led to them disembarking the ride vehicle and walking back to the loading zone.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of the most popular, family-friendly attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Disney must have known that the majority of Guests probably won’t have the opportunity to travel to the savannas of Africa and go on safari. So Disney brought the safari to them.

As part of the attraction, Guests board large trucks that have been outfitted to create a more rough-and-tumble ride experience as the trucks follow a pathway through different animal areas that are reminiscent of the different settings in Africa, such as the African savanna. Guests are treated to views of wildlife roaming freely, as more than 30 species of animals are featured on the safari experience, including the okapi, cheetah, hyena, lion, greater Kudu, the springbok, hippos, white rhinos, and more.

It’s a relaxing attraction for wildlife lovers of all ages that provides a much-needed break from the busy-ness of the parks and from the miles of walking Guests do in a day at Disney. That is, until something goes wrong.

Because the attraction is centered around wildlife, things don’t always go as planned. When sleepy giraffes decide to take their afternoon siestas by standing directly in the way of Disney’s safari trucks, there’s not much that can be done, except for the exercise of patience. If the animals stay on the pathway for a long time, animal keepers will often arrive to offer them a bite of their favorite snack, thus enticing them to move away from the pathway so trucks can continue chauffering Guests throughout the experience.

But occasionally, there are issues that don’t involve the wildlife, like this one.

A video posted by @purely_katelin shows the pathway lined with Disney safari trucks as far as can be seen. Guests from each truck are being evacuated from the vehicles and are asked to use a ladder to disembark from the trucks. (They sit up much higher off the ground than you might think!)

evacuation kilimanjaro safaris

It’s a chaotic scene as Guests climb out of the trucks and gather around moving toward Cast Members who are working to give instructions throughout the evacuation, and it’s clear that neither the Guest with the camera or anyone near her really knows the cause for the evacuation. At one point in the video, @purely_katelin says that they were stuck in the lions’ area of the attraction for 40 minutes before the evacuation.

A Cast Member can also be heard saying, “put those cameras away for me please,” as she directs Guests as they leave the vehicles. Guests have to walk through the cattle guards that provide boundaries for the animals so they are contained in designated areas of the experience. Soon it becomes clear that Guests are going to have to “walk the rest of the way” through the safari. Still, no one knows why, until a little later . . .

As Guests file past the safari truck at the front of the line of vehicles, it becomes very apparent that a problem with the lead vehicle has caused the complete traffic jam in Africa that day. The lead truck was disabled, and vehicles behind it were unable to move forward because the pathway is only wide enough for one vehicle to pass at a time.

It’s difficult when something goes awry at the Parks, but Cast Members are usually very helpful in moving Guests to safety and ensuring that during a less-than-magical time, the magic is completely spoiled. Here’s hoping Katelin and all the Guests who evacuated went on to have a great day and a “wild” time at Animal Kingdom!

Fired Actor Files Lawsuit Against Disney Over Vaccine Mandate

When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, the company not only gained the rights to Fox’s film library, it also became the owner of a number of successful television shows. One of those shows was 9-1-1, which has been on the air since 2018. One of the show’s main characters was Michael Grant, played by Rockmond Dunbar. Dunbar had been on 9-1-1 since its premiere, and fans were shocked when it was announced that the actor would be leaving the series at the end of the fifth season.

When the COVID-19 vaccine became widely available, many companies began instituting mandatory vaccination policies. One of those companies was The Walt Disney Company. Dunbar requested a medical exemption, so he did not have to get the vaccine, which was denied. He then applied for a religious exemption, which Disney denied yet again. Dunbar continued to refuse the vaccine, and Disney promptly ended his contract.

Rockmond Dunbar

Dunbar has now filed a lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company. Dunbar claims that he is a member of the Church of Universal Wisdom, in which its members do not believe in injecting any man-made substances into the body. According to Dunbar’s lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court, and reported by Deadline:

“In retaliation, Defendants summarily terminated Mr. Dunbar’s employment agreement, and refused to pay him the hundreds of thousands of dollars that are still owed to him,” the lawsuit, which references a Deadline article numerous times, reads. “Then, wanting to make an example out of Mr. Dunbar, he believes that Defendants wrongfully leaked negative information to the media about his departure from ‘9-1-1’ including that he sought both religious and medical exemptions that were denied. Defendants deliberately made it sound like Mr. Dunbar was a recalcitrant anti-vaxxer, rather than present the truth – that like millions of other Americans, he is a sincere adherent to a non-mainstream religious belief that prevents him from being vaccinated.”

“On information and belief, Disney has a history of racial discrimination, and Mr. Dunbar was subjected to disparate treatment and disparate impact discrimination on the basis of his race,” the 45-page filing reads. “On information and belief, non-minority employees similarly situated were not subject to termination when they refused the COVID-19 vaccine.”

Dunbar is seeking $1.3 million in damages from Disney. Disney did not comment on the litigation in particular, but did issue the following response:

We take the health and safety of all of our employees very seriously, and have implemented a mandatory vaccination confirmation process for those working in Zone A on our productions. In order to ensure a safer workplace for all, Zone A personnel who do not confirm their vaccination status and do not meet the criteria for exemption will not be eligible to work.”

Dunbar is not the first Disney actor to leave amidst vaccination requirements. Recently, it was announced that Emilio Estevez would not be returning to season two of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, although the actor has said that he is not anti-vax and his departure was merely due to creative differences.

Disney has also reportedly had issues with Letitia Wright, star of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While James is not required to be vaccinated because the film was in production before the mandate went into place, rumors were swirling that she was vocal about her anti-vaccination beliefs on set. The actress has denied those claims.

Why Are Masks STILL Required on Disney Transportation?

As previously shared, Walt Disney World Resort has announced they will no longer be requiring masks for vaccinated Guests indoors beginning February 17, 2022. Disneyland Resort followed the Disney World announcement with a face cover policy change as well. But, don’t throw away those masks just yet!

Disney has announced that despite masks no longer being required indoors, including enclosed locations such as Twilight Zone Tower of Terror‘s elevator or Mission: SPACE‘s closed-off rockets, they are still requiring face coverings on Disney buses, the Monorail, as well as the Disney Skyliner.

Disney’s official face-covering policy beginning February 17, 2022, reads: Face coverings will still be required by all Guests (ages 2 and up) on enclosed Disney transportation, including Disney buses, monorails, and Disney Skyliner.

Monorail

So, why has Disney dropped masks from ALL indoor locations including up-close attraction experiences… but not on Disney transportation? Well, you can thank the President and the TSA.

The most recent statement regarding face masks via the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) dates back to December 2, 2021, when the President’s order was made to extend the face mask requirement on transportation. The statement reads as follows:

Following the President’s order and announcement regarding efforts to combat the Omicron variant, TSA, in conjunction with the CDC, will extend the face mask requirement for individuals across all transportation networks throughout the United States, including at airports, onboard commercial aircraft, on over-the-road buses, and on commuter bus and rail systems through March 18, 2022.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske has said frequently the combination of vaccinations and face masks work and are highly effective in terms of slowing the spread of the virus in the transportation system, and they make travel safer for everyone. More details about the extension will be available soon.

Disney Bus

Did you catch the keywords in the statement? Commuter bus and rail systems. This would include commuter bus and rail systems on Walt Disney World and Disneyland property which is likely the primary reason Disney hasn’t pulled the mask policy away from its transportation options just yet.

We’re curious to see when March 18, 2022 rolls around next month if Disney will finally have the option to drop masks on its transportation outlets. Even more so, makes us wonder if Disney could then start looking at the return of its pre-COVID Minnie Van service.

Disney Tram

The only form of Disney transportation NOT listed on the new face mask policy beginning February 17, 2022, is the Tram system which returned to Magic Kingdom December 2021 and will return this month at Disneyland Resort. The Tram is not enclosed making it the sole Disney transportation mask exception.

We’ll mark our calendars as maybe come March 19, 2022, Disney will announce the retirement of masks throughout ALL of its property… including Disney transportation.
