The Woman who spends thousands on Disney popcorn buckets

Diehard Disney fans usually have a favorite Disney character, Disney Park, park attraction, Disney film, etc. Some of them even have a favorite Disney Parks souvenir. And some love those souvenirs so much that they purchase them on repeat, making it a goal to acquire an entire collection, or to get their hands on every version of that souvenir.

Kayla Freitas is one such Disney fan, and her passion is Disney Parks popcorn buckets.

Kayla was in good company last month when EPCOT’s International Festival of the Arts opened, and a brand-new Figment-themed popcorn bucket debuted. The bucket was so popular that many Guests at EPCOT waited in line for between four and six hours just for the opportunity to purchase one (or several). A few fans even became the focus of news stories about the buckets, some for buying more than Disney’s per-Guest limit allowed, and others for their uncommon kindness in waiting in the line, purchasing a bucket, and gifting it to a total stranger so she didn’t have to wait in line.

Like many of those Guests who waited for hours to buy a Figment bucket, Kayla is a popcorn bucket enthusiast. The 32-year-old mom and Navy veteran has a travel-focused YouTube channel called Travel Memoirs. It’s only been a little over a year since she started collecting the souvenir buckets, which, she says, started by accident.

Years before she began her YouTube channel, Kayla says she attended a “swap meet,” which was an event where people got together and traded their collectibles and other items. It was during the event that she first saw a Disney Parks popcorn bucket shaped like Cinderella’s carriage.

Kayla says she thought the bucket was “a cute little Disney collectible,” so she bought it, and it only cost her $5. It wasn’t until she was looking for information about the bucket online that she discovered that many of the same buckets were selling online for $100 or more.

But it wasn’t until after she had her daughter that she began to acquire more of the festive Disney Parks souvenirs.

“Once I had my daughter,” she explained, “it kind of gave me an excuse to buy all the Disney stuff I wanted as a kid.”

Kayla says she doesn’t really have a “collection niche.” Rather, she buys items that she thinks are “especially interesting or unique.” In this case, those items are Disney Parks popcorn buckets, and in just over a year’s time, Kayla has collected more than 50 of them, and they didn’t all come as cheap as the Cinderella bucket did.

“My most expensive bucket is the Figment one,” Kayla said. “I got it secondhand when it was relatively cheap, a couple hundred dollars, but now they’re going for thousands online, so I’m sort of glad I got it when I did.”

The Figment bucket was sold only at one booth at EPCOT for $25 each, but they sold out quickly. The bucket was recently restocked, but fans could only buy them online. Soon after the announcement was made about the restocking–you guessed it–they sold out yet again.

So what’s the deal with these popcorn buckets, and why do they go for so much online?

One reason is that many are only sold at international Disney Parks, such as Tokyo Disney Resort and Shanghai Disneyland. One Tangled-inspired bucket from Tokyo Disney Resort featured Pascal (Rapunzel’s chameleon sidekick) on the strap, looked like a lantern, and could even light up. But since it was only sold at the one Resort, fans like Kayla who want to add one to their collections usually have to pay the resale price determined by the seller on sites like eBay, and then pay for international shipping.

woman with disney souvenirs

“It would be really cool if Disney brought some of those really creative ones to the US,” Kayla said. “There’s obviously a demand for it.”

Kayla says she has spent “several thousands of dollars” on the buckets in her collection. She loves them and sees them as very creative souvenirs that are also practical because they can be used in a variety of ways.

“A question I get daily, even from Disney lovers, is: what do I do with all these popcorn buckets?” she said. “The answer is everything; I use them as purses, as decorations. I even use them as night lights and piggy banks. They’re just so versatile and so cute. They have so many purposes.”

But she also says she does it for her fans–the one million people who follow her on TikTok–who love to see the new buckets she buys.

“People want more popcorn buckets, so I’m buying them constantly,” Kayla joked. “Not that I’m upset about it.”

Kayla says the buckets’ versatility lends itself to the appeal of these limited-edition souvenirs.

“I think that’s made the popcorn buckets more appealing,” she said. “If they’re just for popcorn, you may or may not be interested. But if you can decorate with them or wear them as a purse at the park, they become an inexpensive but great souvenir.”

Guest Claims That Disney Security Told Her to Throw Away Her Booster Seat

Via DisDining.com

When visiting a Disney Park, it is important to note what items you are not allowed to bring. Some items are a little more obvious than others, like firearms, fireworks, glass bottles, and alcohol. Others might not be as well known to some visitors, like stroller wagons, folding chairs, and selfie sticks. If you do try to bring prohibited items into the Park, Disney security will inform you that you must either bring the item back to your car or throw it in one of the many garbage bins in the area.

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park is enveloped in golden accents and pixie dust as though it has been magically enchanted. Here, guests can explore winding passageways where the epic tale of Princess Aurora is told through spellbinding dioramas. Inspired by the film’s original Eyvind Earle artwork, this iconic attraction features 3-dimensional displays, sound and stunning special effects. The climactic final scene features Maleficent’s transformation into a fire-breathing dragon. (Christian Thompson/Disneyland Resort)

One Guest visited the Disneyland Resort recently and had some trouble when it came to an item she wanted to bring in. According to the Guest, she has a booster seat for her young child, that can also double as a diaper bag. One day, security allowed her to bring the bag into the Parks with her. She went back to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure the next day, and Security told her that she would need to either bring the bag back to her car or throw the diaper bag away.

The Guest took to Reddit to share her story and to see if anyone else had experienced trouble with security not being consistent on their Disneyland Resort visits.

One person asked which answer — diaper bag or booster — should be used to get into the Park. The original poster commented that she was told that, when it comes to certain items being let in, it will be left up to the discretion of Cast Members. That is what led to the poster getting two different answers when she tried to bring it into the Parks on different days.

Apparently “it’s the discretion of certain cast members “ as to what happens and how. Good example: dropped off by an Uber with your child at the park? Is the car seat allowed in?… it is At the discretion of certain cast members. Blue coat cast members specifically. If they say no I guess the car seat gets surrendered to the gods of garbage and excess

Disneyland Train Station

Redditor hotpinkmua said that it was the first security guard who let the Guest in with the chair was the one who had screwed up. Disney does not allow folding chairs and, even though it is a booster seat, it is counted as a folding chair. According to the Redditor, the first security guard should not have let her into the Park with it the first time.

So the first guard screwed up. Anyone who ever goes to Disney know that there are some guards who are very thorough and some who don’t seem to give a rat’s behind about searching bags and making sure people aren’t bringing in things they shouldn’t. Since this qualifies as a folding chair, it just isn’t allowed and it’s on the list of things you aren’t supposed to bring into the park. Not sure why you would use a booster seat as a diaper bag. Just get a bag. That’s odd.

Disneyland Security

Another Guest suggested a simple solution if the Guest wanted to take the bag in — go to another security entrance and don’t mention that the bag contains a booster seat, simply say it is a diaper bag.

f you haven’t thrown it away yet. There is another security entrance at the back of Downtown Disney. Don’t ask me how to get to it I’ve only been to DL once. Go through there and tell them it’s a diaper bag.

When visiting Disneyland Resort, there are three security checkpoints for Guests to choose from. There is one security checkpoint at the Mickey & Friends and Pixar parking structures, one at the entrance to Downtown Disney. There is a final security checkpoint on the other side of the esplanade, where the busses drop Guests off who have come from the Toy Story parking lot.

Before you decide to visit any Disney Park, it is important to visit that Park’s website. The website will have all of the information you need, including Park hours, ride closures, health and safety protocols, and a list of prohibited items. Knowing all of this information in advance only serves to help you have the most magical time on your Disney vacation.

Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind To Open Memorial Day Weekend!

It looks like Disney’s newest roller coaster is going to open sooner than we thought it would!. According to a tweet from Disney’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Geoff Morrell, Disney’s newest roller coaster, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, will be opening Memorial Day weekend. The roller coaster has been under construction for a couple of years and Disney said that an opening was coming late-summer 2022.

Walt Disney

Morrell posted the following on his Twitter account, but then quickly deleted it.

Since Disney has not made Cosmic Rewind’s opening date official yet, it seems that this tweet may have spilled the beans! Morrell then went on later and reposted the tweet, but took out the mention of Memorial Day.

This opening day leak comes on the same day that images were shared of the final ride vehicle as well as the loading area. Phil The Horizoneer (@TheHorizoneer) shared images on Twitter, as well as the information that the ride vehicles would be called Starjumpers.

Here is more information on the new roller coaster — which took the place of Ellen’s Energy Adventure — from the Walt Disney World website:

Begin your adventure by touring the Galaxarium—a planetarium-like exhibition showcasing the similarities and differences between Xandar and Earth’s galaxies. You’ll even get to discover some of the incredible wonders of Xandar and learn about their technology.

Just as you are about to reach the culmination of the tour, everything goes sideways, and you are called into action to help the Guardians of the Galaxy. Are you ready to rock out on an awesome quest across the cosmos to save the galaxy? It’s all up to you!

This family-friendly attraction features the first ever reverse-launch on a Disney coaster and is one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world! A new innovation from Walt Disney Imagineering—this coaster rotates 360 degrees so you can focus on the action!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

it is important to remember that Disney has not confirmed the Memorial Day opening date at this time. The Disney World website still states that the attraction will be opening in late summer 2022. Many had been speculating that the ride would open early since Disney Imagineers seemed close to done, so hopefully, Disney will use this slip to confirm a Memorial Day opening date.

Disneyland unveils the Return Dates for Nighttime Spectaculars

Disneyland Resort in California has just announced the return dates for its nighttime spectaculars plus a big surprise about the Main Street Electrical Parade!

Since Disneyland’s reopening in April 2021, the Resort has continued to welcome back many of its beloved nighttime spectaculars and shows, including Jambalaya Jazz in New Orleans Square at Disneyland Park and the “Disney Junior Dance Party!” in Disney California Adventure Park. New experiences have also been added that include meeting Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail and “Celebrate Soulfully” entertainment.

Now, on April 22, 2022, the Main Street Electrical Parade makes its triumphant return, as well as the “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular, both at Disneyland Park, and “World of Color” finally returns to Disney California Adventure Park!

Fantasmic! returns to Disneyland Park on May 28, 2022.

The Main Street Electrical Parade will be celebrating its 50th anniversary when it returns. In honor of this occasion, Disney’s Live Entertainment Team will be adding new surprises to the spectacular, surely making it a favorite among even more Guests at Disneyland Resort.

Disney describes the new experience as follows:

“This universal theme is reflected in the creative concept of the grand finale sequence. Inspired by both the original design of classic “Main Street Electrical Parade” floats and Disney Legend Mary Blair’s iconic art style on “it’s a small world,” the new grand finale brings to life more than a dozen Disney Animation and Pixar stories. These stories will be interpreted in thousands of sparkling lights and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sound, with unique representations of beloved characters as animated dolls.

As the new grand finale passes by, Guests along each side of the parade route will see a different set of stylized scenes from classic and contemporary favorite stories such as “Encanto,” “The Jungle Book,” “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Aladdin,” “Coco,” “Mulan,” “Brave,” “The Princess and the Frog” and more. Check out one of the early pieces of concept art, featuring Mirabel and Antonio from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-nominated film, “Encanto.”

From the Blue Fairy to a colorful, unique representation of Sleeping Beauty Castle, the grand finale of the “Main Street Electrical Parade” comprises seven segments stretching 118 feet in length, making it one of the longest and grandest units in the parade’s 50-year history.”
