Smoking refrigerator leads to Guest evacuation of Space Mountain & PeopleMover attractions

Yesterday, according to a tweet from an Orlando-based travel site, Gotta Go Orlando, Space Mountain and the PeopleMover at Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort had been evacuated after a fire alarm was activated. The Reedy Creek Fire Department responded to the call.

Shortly after seeing Gotta Go Orlando’s tweet, another tweet claimed that a spokesperson for Reedy Creek confirmed that the department had responded to a call, but that there was no fire, leaving no answers about what exactly had prompted the evacuation of Guests at both attractions, the activation of the fire alarm, and the response from Reedy Creek.

Now, according to The Orlando Sentinel, smoke from a breakroom refrigerator led to the evacuation of Guests from Space Mountain, per Tim Stromsnes, communications director for the Reedy Creek Professional Firefighters and a union official for the firefighters.

Stromsnes says only one engine responded to the call for help. Once a Reedy Creek firefighter unplugged the refrigerator, the other units that had been called to assist in the response were canceled.

Eryka Washington, a spokeswoman for Reedy Creek, confirmed that there had been no fire at Space Mountain.

A call for assistance from the Orange County Fire Rescue was also placed for aid at an address near Tomorrowland, but that call was also canceled. According to the My Disney Experience app, at 4:30 p.m. local time, the Space Mountain attraction was still closed, but by 4:45 p.m., it had reopened to Guests with an 80-minute wait to experience the attraction. As of 5:00 p.m. local time, the PeopleMover attraction remained closed, though it had opened briefly sometime around 4:30 p.m.

Shareholders May Be Planning to Oust Bob Chapek

Since becoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company in early 2020, Bob Chapek has been fighting an uphill battle. Chapek became CEO of Disney in February 2020, and less than one month later, Disney Parks around the world were forced to shut down due to the pandemic. From there, Disney was forced to lay off and furlough tens of thousands of employees — some of whom have yet to be brought back to work.

Chapek has also been dealing with Guests’ anger at the cancellation of Disney’s free FastPass system and its paid-for replacement, Disney Genie+. The company was also in a very public dispute with Marvel star Scarlett Johansson when the starlet sued them for breach of contract. Disney has also not yet brought back trams to all of its U.S. Parks. There have also been thousands of complaints about the quality of the expensive food at the Parks and Disney magic being lost due to an increased focus on profits.

Online petitions have been circulating to have Chapek fired, with the most popular one reaching nearly 100,000 signatures. And now it seems that some shareholders are looking to oust the embattled CEO from his position on Disney’s Board of Directors. An anonymous Redditor known as MightyIrish posted to the social media platform that shareholders were being asked whether or not they wanted to re-elect Chapek to the Board of Directors.

MightyIrish was voting no and said:

If you are a Disney shareholder you likely received an email yesterday asking you to vote in the annual meeting. Bob Chapek is up for re-election to the board of directors. This is the most direct way to let Disney know if you are unhappy with his leadership, at least moreso than complaining on Reddit or signing an online petition. It may seem insignificant, and will likely not be successful in removing him directly, but recall that Michael Eisner lost 43% of the vote in 2004 after Roy E. Disney lead a campaign to oust him ( https://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/03/business/media/disney-dissidents-rebuke-eisner-denying-him-43-of-vote.html ) and he was removed shortly thereafter. We can do this again.

Other Redditors jumped into the reply thread and shared that they were also voting no. Some said that they had tried to share the news about not voting for Chapek’s reelection on other Disney sub-Reddits, but those posts were deleted.

Shareholders can vote to either keep Chapek on the Board or select someone else by March 8. After that, votes will be counted.

Group Tries to Break Into Disneyland In Broad Daylight

When you visit Disneyland Resort, there are some things you expect to see — people enjoying a delicious Dole Whip, toddlers sleeping in their strollers, and a long line for Radiator Springs Racers. However, sometimes you see something you never expected. TikToker Kel (@themeparkmom) was visiting the Happiest Place on Earth recently and couldn’t help but share her wild story.

Kel took to the social media platform to share that, while she was waiting her turn to get into the Park, she heard Cast Members yelling for security. She then saw a group of four teenagers running towards the Park through the exit.  They ran past Cast Members and sprinted down Main Street. She then pointed out that the act seemed fruitless. Security cameras cover every inch of Disneyland Resort.

While seeing people try to break into a Disney Park may be shocking enough, the story doesn’t end there. Kel followed up her original post with one where she reveals that she later saw two of the teens who broke into the Park. They were being followed by security, who soon surrounded them. Sadly, two of the teenagers were with a young boy and a young girl. Security told the group they needed to go with them to a secure area. They were then escorted off Main Street.

Kel finished her series, informing her followers that Cast Members told her that the two young children seen in her second video were not a part of the group that originally broke in. She said that the group who broke past Cast Members at the exit were four teenagers, around the same age as the two that had been caught. She did not know what happened to the other two or where they were. Kel also did not know how the children became involved in the situation, but Anaheim Police were also on scene.

When visiting Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure, both a ticket and a reservation are needed to enter the Park. It is unknown if the teens had tickets but no reservations, or if they had tickets at all. However, thinking that they could simply run past security and enjoy their day is unfathomable. Disney has no qualms about banning Guests who behave like that. It is possible that the teens may have been told that they are not to step foot on any Disney property again.

“Mandalorian” actress Gina Carano responds to Whoopi Goldberg’s suspension

Actress Gina Carano from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian isn’t happy about Whoopi Goldberg’s suspension either.

Goldberg was suspended for two weeks by ABC New President Kimberly Godwin after Goldberg made comments on Monday’s episode of ABC’s The View, saying the Holocaust was “not about race,” but rather about “man’s inhumanity to man,” which led to an immediate outcry online.

Goldberg’s co-hosts are reportedly unhappy about the decision on ABC’s part to take disciplinary action against Goldberg, and some fans of The View are angered by Goldberg’s suspension, some threatening a boycott of the series citing the news network’s “double standard” in suspending Goldberg for her comments while a former co-host, Meagan McCain, never received similar consequences for comments she made over the years than some felt were inflammatory.

But others, like actress Gina Carano, who was fired by Disney for comments she made referring to the Holocaust feel there’s been a “double standard,” but from a different angle.

Last February, Carano was fired from her role as Cara Dune on Disney+’s The Mandalorian for comments she made in an Instagram post, which read:

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors… even by children… Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement regarding her termination. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Carano has taken to Twitter this week to give clarity to her Instagram post from February 2021, to show her support for the Jewish community, and to call for “conversation over cancellation.”

Carano tweeted that she never once said that “Republicans were being treated like Jews in the Holocaust.”

Carano also tweeted about her support for the Jewish community, saying that last year, when she was fired by Disney for her comments, it was a Jewish man, Ben Shapiro, who reached out to her.

Goldberg’s suspension came on Tuesday of this week. Goldberg made her comments during Monday’s episode of The View, after which Goldberg appeared on the Late Night with Stephen Colbert Show and doubled down on her comments from earlier that day. Later on Monday, she made an apology, and on Tuesday’s episode, she made an apology on-air.

Store Owner Blames Disney For Their Business Closing

There is a lot that goes into making a movie — from casting to creating the costumes and designing the sets. And that’s before filming even begins. Once filming begins, the cast and crew are not the only ones affected. If filming takes place anywhere other than a studio, streets may be shut down and stores may be forced to alter their hours. One person who lives in New Orleans, Louisiana, is claiming that they have to close their business after 37 years because of Disney’s filming of one of its movies.

TikToker Michael Manzella (@michaelmanzella37) recently shared a video of a message in a store window while he was out and about. The store owner claimed that, due to Disney’s filming, they were being forced to permanently close their store. The note read:

Thanks DISNEY and NOLA FILM office for putting me out of business after 37 years of business at this location.

I survived Katrina, the BP oil spill, an armed robbery, the building next door collapsing, mandatory covid closure, to name a few…

Who would believe MICKEY MOUSE would take me down!

Michael then shared a video of the street, where lights and a film setup can be seen. However, traffic is still moving down the street and a number of people are seen walking up and down. Instead of supporting the business owner, many commented that they did not believe that the filming was the reason the store was closing. Many cited the fact that company’s like Disney will pay businesses thousands of dollars if they are forced to close because of filming.

TikToker @helloosunshiine said:

That’s total BS. Disney compensates businesses to close for the time they are filming. Seems like this shop was already going downhill for a while

M. Anthony Barrett claims to live in the area and didn’t believe the shop owner. He said that the shop was only open by appointment only.

Nope…. Wasn’t she open by appointment only?.. Was just there in December… Wanted to visit but she was never open..

BNicole5000 shared that she lives in Los Angeles, where filming takes place all of the time, and she knows that businesses are paid when that happens.

Living in LA where film crews are constantly filming and shutting down areas, they pay the shops. So seems like maybe other issues

It appears that Disney is in New Orleans to film the new Haunted Mansion movie. The film will star Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), LaKeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah), and Owen Wilson (Loki). Disney also recently announced that they were looking for extras who live in the New Orleans area. According to reports, Disney is hoping to be able to release the film in time for Halloween 2022, but if that date is not met, a mid-2023 release is expected.
