First Trailer Released For “Lightyear”

To infinity and … 🚀 Experience the origin story of a Space Ranger in Disney and Pixar’s #Lightyear, in theaters Summer 2022.

Chris Evans is portraying Buzz Lightyear in a new Pixar movie called Lightyear. He’s not playing the Buzz we know from Toy Story, but “the original Buzz Lightyear.” That alone brings up a lot of questions. Fortunately, the film’s teaser trailer and director, Angus MacLane, are here to shed more light on just how this is all coming together.

“‘Set in the world of Toy Story‘ is kind of weird. Another way to get at it, it’s a straightforward sci-fi action film about the Buzz Lightyear character,” MacLane, who co-directed Finding Dory and multiple Toy Story shorts for Pixar, tells EW over Zoom. “In the Toy Story universe, it would be like a movie that maybe Andy would have seen, that would have made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure.”

“The movie doesn’t end and then you see Andy eating popcorn,” the filmmaker clarifies. “This is its own thing… This is standalone. It’s the Buzz Lightyear movie. It’s that character but as the space ranger, not as the toy.”

Watch the trailer here…

Based on what we know from the Toy Story films, Buzz, as voiced by Tim Allen, is a toy based on the Buzz of a popular sci-fi franchise, a character who’s captain of the Universe Protection Unit of the Space Ranger corps from the Intergalactic Alliance. In December of last year, when the movie was first announced with Evans aboard in the starring voice role, Pixar revealed Lightyear to be the origin story for that character, “the young test pilot that became the space ranger we all know him to be today.”

“When you hear about the Buzz Lightyear of Toy Story talk about his space ranger-ness or Star Command, it’s very much a one-note amalgam of sci-fi cliches, which is the point of that movie,” MacLane expounds. “If you were going to make that world real, you can’t have it constantly feeling like it’s this derivative thing.”

The commonality he found through all the films is that “Buzz has a disagreement over the nature of reality.” In the first Toy Story, Buzz believes himself to be a space ranger, while Woody (Tom Hanks) knows he’s a toy. MacLane had previously directed the 2011 short Toy Story Toons: Small Fry, which introduced a miniature Buzz “that had the same kind of affliction,” he says. “So, for us, the core idea that we wanted to build upon was, how do you have a character out of step with the world around them?”

There are other “surface things” that will connect Evans’ Buzz to Allen’s Buzz, like the iconic Buzz Lightyear space suit that appears in the trailer and the character’s famous catchphrase. Evans is about to finish the “To infinity and beyond” line before the Lightyear trailer cuts him off. It’s a move Disney likely borrowed from the Avengers movies, which routinely cut off Evan’s Captain America from officially saying “Avengers, assemble!” until Endgame.

A version of Emperor Zurg, Buzz’s infamous nemesis in Toy Story, likely plays a part in Lightyear, as well, though MacLane can’t say much. “If the core elements of what Buzz is were to be paid off correctly, you would want to make sure that he had a laser, you’d probably want to make sure that he had rocket legs, and you’d probably want to make sure that at some point he had a recognizable antagonist,” the filmmaker teases. “But of course, I’m not at liberty to say anything about anything at this time.”

Beyond that, Lightyear, at its core, is meant to be an epic sci-fi movie. The trailer opens with a scene of Buzz locking into a rocket, powered by a mysterious crystallized energy source that allows him to shoot around the sun without getting burned. “Will it play a larger role in the film? Yes it will,” MacLane says of that scene.

MacLane says he hopes to give audiences the kind of sci-fi movie he grew up watching from 1977-91, but with “more modern sensibilities.”

Star Wars is a name that comes up in the conversation. A scene from the trailer shows Buzz and a droid hiding behind a collapsed tree trunk on an unidentified misty planet, one that gives off major Dagobah vibes from The Empire Strikes Back.

“I would say at Pixar, Star Wars was the common language when I started in ’97. That was the thing that we couldn’t get out of our minds,” MacLane explains. “The world was forever changed once we saw Star Wars. It’s pretty inextricable, that sensibility. I think that [parallel to Lightyear] isn’t necessarily intentional. I’m not really interested in repeating stuff or reminding audiences of better movies, but there are a lot of visual lessons from movies of that era.”

For MacLane, Lightyear is “a distillation of things” he feels are cool. “The edict is, just make it awesome,” he adds. “I feel like we’ve lost a sense of joy, unfortunately, in a lot of larger films. So, I try to instill that again.”

“The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” Evans said in his own statement. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

Lightyear is set to premiere on June 17, 2022.

Guest ‘hacks’ Lightning Lane system to avoid paying fees to ride one of Disney’s most popular attractions

Walt Disney World has just introduced and implemented its completely revamped ride reservation system, and not everyone is feeling the love for it.

That’s because the new services replace the old FastPass and FastPass+ systems at Disney World, both of which were free to Guests and only required making a reservation for a time to enjoy a particular attraction, and then returning to experience the attraction.

Now, Guests will pay for the once-free option of making a reservation to ride. Guests don’t have to use the service; they can, instead, wait in the stand-by queue instead of paying to walk through the Lightning Lane. Guests can opt for the Genie+ option, which will cost them $15 per person in their traveling parties, per day. But there are 2 attractions at each theme park that aren’t included in the $15 per person, per day fee.

Rather, if Guests want to enjoy Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom, Frozen Ever After or Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT, Tower of Terror or Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Avatar: Flight of Passage or Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, they will have to pay an additional per person, per attraction fee if they don’t want to use the standby queue.

But one Disney fan has apparently been very observant since the system first debuted, and she, like other fans, has noticed, that there are times when the Lightning Lane option is counter-productive: Guests pay to access the attraction without a huge wait, but then the Lightning Lane wait time is longer than the expected wait time in the standby queue, or, in other cases, the posted times in the stand-by queue are much longer than actual wait times. It has happened with the Rise of the Resistance attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

At least she has some humor about it.

So, she’s found a “hack” to use in response to this issue, and it’s probably the easiest hack you’ll ever employ: simply wait till the end of the evening to enjoy the Rise of the Resistance attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but don’t pay for Lightning Lane. She doesn’t think you’ll need it.

Disney fans have taken to social media to air their opinions about the new Genie+ and Lightning Lane systems, and the majority of those opinions are not of the positive persuasion.

@BlozzS says the new system is the “end of the world.”

In this tweet, a user responds to a tweet by @DisneyParksNews, touting the new Disney Genie as a magical itinerary-making phenomenon.

Some Disney fans, like @JulieaMankin, simply entreat Disney World to bring back their beloved FastPasses.

Online petition is circulating calling for the removal of Disney’s CEO

If you’ve spent any time on social media, it’s no surprise that many are not happy with Bob Chapek’s performance in his role as CEO of The Walt Disney Company. And now, an anonymous person has begun a petition to see that performance come to a close.

The 61-year-old media executive came into his role when previous CEO Bob Iger finally stepped down. Passing the proverbial torch had been on his agenda for some time, but the event continued to be postponed. And when Iger did step down, it was at perhaps the worst time possible.

But then again, who could have forecast a global pandemic that would seep its way into every facet of daily life, business, entertainment, etc.? And whether because of the pandemic or because the powers that be had concerns early on, Bob Iger was asked to stay close to the post; Chapek was CEO, but Iger was at his side, always at the ready, and presumably looking after affairs just like he had been doing since 2005.

Disney fans have voiced their concerns–and sometimes, their anger, disgust, and sheer frustration–with the Chapek administration, if you will.

And an annual retreat that took place inside the company back in June in Hawaii has fans wondering if Mr. Iger is beginning to feel what some fans are feeling. Iger opened the meeting with a word of caution.

“In a world and business that is awash with data, it is tempting to use data to answer all of our questions, including creative questions,” he said. “I urge all of you not to do that; if Disney had relied too heavily on data, the company might never have made big, breakthrough movies like Black PantherCoco and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

Iger went on to point out that everything done within the scope of Disney begins, at its inception, with creativity. You know, that “one little spark” thing.

Though these words were said amongst a group of people from The Walt Disney Company, word got out, and many began to perceive Iger’s words as a slam to Chapek, however diplomatic.

Not only are fans upset with Chapek’s reign; but recently, creative executives under Chapek have begun to be vocal, saying some of them are losing their creative license within their roles, and that’s if they haven’t already lost their jobs altogether, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Not only does the new petition offer those opposed to Chapek the chance to sign the petition if they feel that he’s unfit for the role of CEO or that his leadership is lacking, but it also goes so far as to name another Disney executive who is, in the opinion of the creator of the petition, has a better track record than Chapek and is better qualified for the role of CEO.

According to the online petition at Change.org:

“Bob Chapek became the Chairman of Parks and Resorts for Disney in 2015. He has consistently made decisions that decrease the quality of what is put into the parks, and also ones that favor using Intellectual properties instead of original attractions. He consistently put himself and money above the product and quality of the company.

In early 2020 he became the CEO of the Walt Disney Company which was extremely concerning. Bob Chapek has made an excessive amount of budget cuts, even with the Covid-19 pandemic being considered. Budget cuts began before the pandemic began, and increased. He recently reinstated full executive salaries at Disney and also has laid off over 28,000 employees throughout the company. And now he is moving the focus to Disney plus, the current big moneymaker, instead of keeping the parks at high quality.

Normally you would think to keep the quality of the parks during a time of decreased revenue, but he is concerned about what will make him the most money quickest. Maintenance at the parks has also gotten its worst under Chapek, and is not getting better. Chapek has proven he doesn’t care about the quality and legacy of Disney.

Josh D’Amaro, the current chairmen of parks and resorts, has not been able to do much under current circumstances, but has been very involved in the parks, assuring quality, greeting guests, and even riding through new attractions to assure high quality. He even went out of his way to console and apologize to cast members throughout Disney World and Disneyland that were affected by the layoff.

So far he has proven an interest, and commitment to the parks, and a want to make them better. While he hasn’t been there long he has made a wonderful impression and could be a good replacement for Mr. Chapek. There are also probably many other executives in Disney that they could make their new CEO. Bob Chapek is hurting and tarnishing the name of the Company, and needs to be removed.”

Disney Genie’s Lightning Lane Prices Climb for the Weekend

The new Disney Genie program has officially launched at Walt Disney World and will soon be arriving at Disneyland Resort. With the Disney World launch on October 19, we’ve been able to see and experience the three-part program that has arrived at the Disney Parks. The complimentary Disney Genie upgrade in the My Disney Experience App is rather impressive with the ability to help guide your day through the Parks. The second component is the Disney Genie+ which is $15 per person, per day. You can use Disney Genie+ to skip the lines (much like a paid FastPass) on select attractions. Thirdly, there are the Lightning Lane attractions which consist of eight a-la-carte attractions that you can buy the ability to skip the line. While the $15 Disney Genie+ price remains the same whether it’s the weekday or weekend, Lightning Lane pass pricing does increase on the weekend due to the crowd increase. We’re now seeing the Disney Park first weekend pricing settle in with Lightning Lane attractions.

Weekend Lightning Lane Pricing

As the first Disney Genie weekend arrives, pricing for Lightning Lane access is on the climb! More people equals a higher upcharge for the following Lightning Lane attraction. Here is pricing for the Lightning Lane attractions as of Friday, October 22:

Magic Kingdom

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: was $10, now $12
  • Space Mountain: was $7, now $9

EPCOT

  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure: was $9, now $11
  • Frozen Ever After: was $9, now $11

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

  • Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway: was $8, now $10
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: was $15 – remains $15

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

  • Expedition Everst: was $7 – remains $7
  • Avatar Flight of Passage: was $11, now $14

Interestingly enough, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the one Lightning Lane attraction to regularly sell out almost immediately with Park opening. If this is a ride you want to pay to Lightning Lane, you’ll want to buy your pass as a Disney Resort Guest at 7:00 am. If you aren’t a Disney Resort Guest, you can try to snag a Lightning Lane as soon as the Park opens, but don’t wait as it is selling out within minutes!
