Disney Releases Statement On George Floyd Death

Disney has released a statement addressed to its employees regarding the murder of George Floyd, and the ongoing protests throughout the country due to ongoing racial disparity. The letter is signed off on behalf of Bob Iger, Bob Chapek, and Latondra Newton.

Resolve in a Time of Unrest: A Message to Fellow Employees

Dear Fellow Employee,

The recent killing of George Floyd as well as other instances of lethal attacks and harassment of unarmed black citizens in our nation continue to drive outrage and calls for action by people of all cultural backgrounds, including many of our employees. Feelings of grief and anger cause us to confront the inscrutable idea that the lives of some are deemed less valuable – and less worthy of dignity, care and protection – than the lives of others.

While these devastating incidents are not new, there’s something unique about what’s happening in this moment. The pandemic coupled with these recent injustices have pushed the issues of racial disparity into the open.

We, too, are struggling to make sense of the recent tragedies that leave us feeling overcome with sorrow. While we don’t have all the answers, we resolve to use our compassion, our creative ideas and our collective sense of humanity to ensure we are fostering a culture that acknowledges our people’s feelings and their pain. We also realize that now more than ever is the time for us all to further strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion everywhere.

We intend to focus our efforts and resources to compassionately and constructively talk about these matters openly and honestly as we seek solutions. We intend to keep the conversation going, not just today, but for as long as it takes to bring about real change.

Bob Chapek, Bob Iger & Latondra Newton

Disney Springs To Close at 7pm Effective Today to Comply With Orange County Curfew Order

To comply with Orange County’s new 10 p.m. curfew, effective today, Sunday, May 31 and until further notice, Disney Springs will be closing at 7 p.m., to allow cast members, operating participant employees, and guests time to return home.

Hours of operation may vary by location. For details, please call the restaurant or store you’d like to visit.

Orange County joins a number of counties across the state (like Miami-Dade County) who have instituted curfews due to the ongoing civil unrest and protests surrounding the murder of George Floyd. Disney released an official statement earlier today on the tragedy.

Prior to the curfew, hours for Disney Springs since the reopening have been 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. We expect hours to return to normal once the curfew is lifted.

World Showcase To Use Cast Members Instead of Cultural Representatives On Reopening

With EPCOT at Walt Disney World reopening on Wednesday, July 15, the park has little over a month to staff its numerous pavilions. The World Showcase in particular may be faced with a number of issues, as the Cultural Representative program (along with Disney Internships) was suspended on April 18. Between that and current global travel restrictions, it may be difficult to staff these international pavilions, and a new union agreement could mean that we’ll be seeing Cast Members taking over the positions of Cultural Representatives temporarily.

A recently-signed memorandum of understanding between Walt Disney World and Unite Here Local 362 indicates that until Disney is able to resume normal staffing, Cast Members who “do not meet the culturally authentic theming at EPCOT may be temporarily assigned to work in positions which are otherwise reserved for Cultural Representatives.”

Once Cultural Representatives are able to travel from their home countries once again, they will be reinstated throughout EPCOT’s World Showcase. In the meantime, it’s good to hear that Disney, in conjunction with the unions, is working to staff Cast Members as soon as possible––albeit in slightly different positions than before––after the unprecedented company-wide furloughs.

Kingdom Hearts Reportedly Could Be Coming To Disney+ As An Animated Series

Kingdom Hearts fans have been a very loyal and dedicated fan base over the years, following the story across a variety of gaming consoles. However, a new platform is reportedly in the works to continue on the story of Light versus Dark. Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts video game is apparently in development of getting an animated television show that would be available on Disney+.

While nothing has been officially stated by Disney on this matter, there’s been a bit of discourse about it on Twitter, which has our hopes up for this being a possibility in the future.

Emre Kaya, a writer for The Cinema Spot, got the discussion started by tweeting that Square Enix was asked to make a pilot using the animation software that was used in the video games, as things didn’t work out well with Disney.

It was with Kaya’s tweet that we also discovered that it would most likely be an animated show, as most fans were worried what a live-action version of this video game could look like. After seeing how 20th Century Fox’s Assassin’s Creed movie turned out, fans have the right to be worried when it comes to adapting video games into live action media.

The conversation only continued to grow when Skyler Shuler, The DisInsider editor-in-chief, added more information regarding the development of the show.

Embedded video

It would be a series, rather than a movie. Whether the series would follow the events of the video games or tell a new story, we’re currently unsure. It hasn’t been reported if the voice actors for the main characters of the game like Sora, Roxas, Aqua or Axel would have a part in the show. However, the voices actors for Goofy (Bill Farmer) and Donald (Tony Anselmo) would be reprising their role, as well as Jim Cummings, who voices many beloved Disney characters.

While nothing is officially reported or has a release date been announced, the idea of this becoming a reality is definitely exciting.

More exciting announcements regarding the Kingdom Hearts franchise should be occurring next month, according to the Kingdom Hearts Twitter account.

Virgin Trains Lays High-Speed Railway To Orlando International Airport

South Florida residents are well on track to a high-speed rail to Orlando.

Brightline, soon to be known as Virgin Trains, posted a photo of freshly-laid track leading to their future station at Orlando International Airport on Tuesday. Construction has continued on the line during the COVID-19 pandemic, with adjustments made to take precautions against the virus.

When complete, the route will take riders from Miami to Orlando in three hours. For comparison, it typically takes four hours to drive between the two cities. Air travel typically takes an hour, but factoring the time needed for going through security and seating, the time difference is significantly shortened.

Virgin Trains signed a letter of intent with Walt Disney World in 2018 to establish a station at the resort, with engineering and design work for the station currently underway. Virgin Trains president Patrick Goddard said last year about the Orlando line, “It’s our expectation to get it done and to build out to Disney.” Currently, Brightline operates stations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.

The Orlando International Airport station is expected to open in 2022.
