Imagineer Joe Rohde & Dinoland U.S.A – Part 5

Imagineer Joe Rohde has been taking Disney fans on an online digital tour of Animal Kingdom through his Instagram, providing deep backstory on its ethos and culture. He’s discussed the Tree of Life, Africa, Asia, and Expedition Everest, but now we’re heading to the American southwest to Diggs County and DinoLand, U.S.A.!

Joe starts out be giving us some context for the accuracy of the dinos you see in the land…

“A lot of our Disney’s Animal Kingdom research took us to far away foreign countries… But it also took us to some of the great paleontological sites in North America. Paleontologists like Phil Currie and Bob Bakker were kind enough to instruct us.

We are very liberal about the dinosaurs that you encounter in this land, both in geography and chronology, though they are Cretaceous era creatures….if you see something that looks like a fossil of a Prehistoric creature, it is either a real fossil of a prehistoric creature or a replica of a real fossil. (The Carnotaurus in the queue line for the ride is a composite. The real Carnotaurus is smaller.) The interesting thing about dinosaurs is that they are created by our imagination as a result of research and speculation….Because of this, there is always debate about their true nature. That debate is embedded in the land in the context of many of the graphics.

Dinoland has a lot of humor and because of that I think we can relax some of the seriousness of some of the other themes and get away with some hijinx.”

Joe continues in another post about all the dinos you can find in the land…

“There is of course the Brachiosaurus at the Gateway. Triceratops in the queue. The famous and controversial Sue tyrannosaur fossil. A Parasaurolophus in the Boneyard. A Pteranodon, a Styracosaurus, another Tyrannosaur skull, an Allosaurus skull and a Hadrosaur skull and Phobosuchus skull in Restaurantosaurus. The Brachiosaurus is substantially modified… Other than that, these are the same casts you’re going to see in a museum.”

Now, let’s take a time-rover drive through the exciting attraction “Dinosaur!”

“Dinosaur” in Dinoland at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of our few IP-based attractions. At the time, the film had groundbreaking CGI effects. Originally there was a Styracosaurus out front for no better reason than it’s my favorite dinosaur…and the attraction was called Countdown to Extinction. We renamed it when the film came out, but the link to the film was already there. It may not be obvious, but such decisions have to be made years in advance. You don’t get a figure that looks like a character in a movie unless you start way before you open.

The Carnotaurus in the ride is substantially bigger and wider than a real Carnotaurus would be. This is because we had to fit a whole bunch of machinery inside of it. So we invented a new species, Carnotaurus robustus. A real Carnotaurus is a pretty weird looking animal to start with… With really really stubby short arms. Our Carnotaurus kind of reaches out towards you with his little hands… But I’m not sure a real one could even do that.

Many plastic toy Carnotauruses seem to be based on our interpretation which is odd because it’s so specifically distorted for our own attraction reasons. Many toy Carnos are red…why?!? That’s a weird color for a big predator. We chose it for narrative and scenic reasons. They are often thicker and toad-faced like ours. Their arms reach out. Go check. Just do image search on Carnotaurus toy. Then look up Carnotaurus sastrei, the scientific specimen. Sometimes a popular image just takes over. Shows you the power of art.”

Lastly, Joe discusses some real folk art that you can find only at Dinoland!

“When we were building Disney’s Animal Kingdom The House of Blues was being built at what was then an expansion of Downtown Disney. They had employed a prominent folk artist, Gregory Warmack, who went by Mr. Imagination. We enlisted him to create an actual work of American folk art in front of Chester and Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures. He came out to our site and created the concrete dinosaur in this photo.

His other work has been shown or exists today in places like the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the American Visionary Art Museum in Maryland, The Smithsonian, The Dallas Museum of Art. I believe that the work he created for us is not actually included in his curriculum vitae. It should be. So I hope some art historian is looking.

He has since passed away, but I think it’s kind of interesting that our tribute to the unsung folk arts of America includes an actual work of unsung Folk art.”

Updates Florida COVID-19 Projection Model Suggests Possible June 1st Opening

According to new data from the Florida Health COVID-19 projection model, Florida has since passed the peak of COVID-19 daily deaths, meaning that after June 1, relaxing social distancing may be possible with containment strategies that include testing, contact tracing, isolation, and limiting gathering sizes.

The White House issued new federal guidelines for the “Opening Up America Again” effort, listing the three phases each state will eventually go though before clearing Phase 3, which would be considered life after a COVID-19 vaccine or at the very least a full drop-off in cases.

Do note that Walt Disney World remains closed “until further notice” and that the June 2 date is not necessarily indicative of a potential reopening date.

Walt Disney Company Stock Rebounds After Reopening Guidelines Released

With Disney’s parks and resorts shuttered across the globe due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and movie theaters across the nation sharing a similar fate, the conglomerate’s revenue has been severely compromised, giving temporary leeway for companies like Netflix, which are focused on “stay-at-home” products like video streaming, to gain a financial advantage. In fact, just this Wednesday, Netflix had officially passed Disney in terms of worth, with stocks for the company hitting an all-time high at market close. However, the Mouse is back, with Disney shares rising 4.5% today, closing at $106.63 a share. It seems the prospect of a phased reopening has reinstated shareholders’ faith in the company after the initial damage of the still-ongoing health crisis, boosting market capitalization for Disney to over $192 billion.

The White House issued new federal guidelines for the “Opening Up America Again” effort, listing the three phases each state will eventually go though before clearing Phase 3, which would be considered life after a COVID-19 vaccine or at the very least a full drop-off in cases. In our analysis of the new guidelines, it isn’t until the state enters Phase Two that we’d imagine the parks could truly reopen, with Non-Essential Travel resuming at that time, and only moderate social distancing required.

It was shortly after the announcement that Netflix ended its brief two-day stint on top of the entertainment market.

While these new guidelines will certainly pave the way to a potential reopening, that doesn’t necessarily imply that it will happen anytime soon. According to BMO Capital analyst Dan Salmon, he doesn’t expect Disney’s theme parks to begin reopening before July 1. (The earliest any state can begin to progress through the Phases outlined above is May 1.) Regardless of their market worth, Disney is still facing an uphill battle, as the company has accrued $13 billion in debt and credit agreements in order to mitigate the financial effects of closing down its parks and film studios.

New Detail On Disney+ Original Film “Secret Society of Second-Born Royals” To Air This Summer

If you love both Disney Princesses and superhero team-ups, the Disney+ Original Film Secret Society of Second-Born Royals might just be your new favorite film.

New photos and details of the film were featured in Entertainment Weekly, and it promises plenty of adventure. The film takes place in the Kingdom of Illyria, where Sam (Peyton Elizabeth Lee, “Andi Mack”) struggles to find her place as her older sister, Princess Eleanor (Ashley Liao), prepares to eventually take the throne. As Lee told Entertainment Weekly‘s Sydney Bucksbaum, “Sam has always felt like not only is she second born, but she is also second best.” She is struggling to find where she can shine and where she belongs. She’s not your typical princess; she loves to skateboard, and doesn’t aspire to be a queen. Oh, and she also has superpowers.

Yes, in this film, first-borns may get the throne, but second-borns get superpowers, and join an elite team of heroes tasked with protecting the world. Think The Princess Diaries meets The Avengers.

As Lee explained, “Sam is going to be a unique addition to the Disney princess family because she doesn’t want to be a princess, she doesn’t want to be royalty. Because of that, it takes her on this journey of figuring out how to make it work for herself that’s going to break that delicate princess mold. When she finds this secret society that feels the same way, they figure out how to create their own legacy and have an impact on their country and the world.”

So when you’ve got a team of second-born royalty, you need a team leader who can understand them. Enter Prof. James Morrow (Skylar Astin, Hamlet 2, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”), a second-born royal with superpowers of his own. Astin told Bucksbaum, “He is such a fun character and provides a little levity to this otherwise fantasy action movie.” Acting as the team’s version of Professor X, he guides the royals as they learn to harness their abilities and work together. His unique power assists with that, as Astin added: “James has the ability to multiply, so that is very convenient for teaching and combat. I made sure to make certain versions of him more eager, certain ones more serious. In a fight scene there’s one that’s more aggressive. My mother is going to love this movie because there will be 20 of me.”

Joining Sam on her journey are:

The extremely friendly Princess January (Isabella Blake-Thomas)…

The charming, but egotistical Prince Tuma (Niles Fitch)…

The caring, shy, and intelligent Prince Matteo (Faly Rakotohavana)…

…and the very popular Princess Roxana (Olivia Deeble).

With all this young talent, Astin remarked that it was a case of “art imitating life” on the set. “I’ve become a little bit of a mentor for the kids on set. You forget how much experience you have until you work with people so much younger and you’re like, ‘Wow, I guess I’ve been doing this for a while.’ Since like literally when these kids were born!”

Not only was his skill as an actor, but as a musical performer came into play, according to Lee: “Noah [Lomax], who plays my best friend and bandmate in the movie, we had a couple musical scenes together. And [Astin] was so helpful because neither of us played our instruments prior to the film. He was there to lend his musical ear to what we were doing.”

Of course, any good superhero movie needs a villain, and this film is no exception. When Inmate 34 (Greg Bryk, “The Handmaid’s Tale”) escapes one of Illyria’s most secure prisons after ten years, he plots his revenge by taking over the throne… and the world. It’s up to this secret team to save the day. “That’s when we get to see [the royals] make their mark,” as Lee put it.

In addition to this preview of the film, Disney also released the poster below!

Lawsuit Claims Teenager Was Asked To Remove A Social Media Post About Covid-19 Infection @ WDW

Despite Walt Disney World remaining open right up until mid-March, very few COVID-19 cases remotely relating back to the parks have been reported, and all with spurious variables, like trips to other theme parks and traveling through congested airports. Now, a 16-year-old guest who visited Walt Disney World during spring break claims that she was threatened with jail by a local sheriff if she didn’t remove social media posts saying she had COVID-19.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Wisconsin Institute for Liberty and Law filed a lawsuit against Marquette County Sheriff Joseph Konrath and a patrol sergeant, alleging that the sergeant went to the home of 16-year-old Amyiah Cohoon in Oxford, Wisconsin last month and demanded that she had to delete Instagram posts stating she had COVID-19, or otherwise she and her parents would face arrest.

Cohoon had suffered from severe respiratory symptoms similar to those of COVID-19 during her spring break trip to the theme parks. While she tested negative, her attorney claims that doctors believe she might have missed the window for testing positive. She went on to post on Instagram that she had COVID-19 on March 26, with a second post showing her hooked up to an oxygen mask in a hospital. Her parents contacted the school to alert other parents whose children had been on the spring break trip with her. The school then informed the county sheriff, who sent a deputy to her home.

The sheriff’s attorney claims that no one was actually threatened, and that her Instagram posts were causing unnecessary distress and panic throughout the school system.
